Weekley makes 3s count

The number 3 must be Boo Weekley’s lucky one. At least on Friday at the Crowne Plaza Invitational, that is.

He finished off his round with four straight 3s, three of which resulted in birdies, on the way to a 63 that left him at 10 under and, you guessed it, three strokes off the lead.

Weekley was steady early and then played his final 12 holes in 7 under, including a 30 on the back nine. He used just 11 putts over his final nine holes and one-putted his last five.

“I had a slow front,” Weekley acknowledged. “I wasn’t hitting it real close. I had myself 25, 30-footers. All of a sudden I hit one golf shot inside 10 feet, and I made it and all of a sudden it started rolling a little bit.”

Weekley is one of the TOUR’s best shot-makers when he’s healthy and the shoulder injury that plagued him earlier in the year appears to  be on the mend. Small wonder, then, that he was anxious for another shot at Colonial, which is a position golf course like Harbour Town Golf Links where Weekley has won the Verizon Heritage twice.

“It’s got characteristics like Hilton Head,” Weekley said. “If you can keep it in play here and get on the right side of the fairway and the green, you got a good opportunity of making birdie.

“I missed the cut the first time I came here. … But I was excited to get back because I just started feeling better and starting to play better and feel good about my game and keep the momentum going.”

Boo is one of the greatest personalities in golf yet it seems the media wants to hide him from us. His play at the Ryder Cup made him a superstar to the golfing world and one that is desperately needed now yet we very seldomly get a chance to see him play. I just hope they show him when he raises the trophy on Sunday!

He stayed with me for a week with Joe his caddie right before he came back out on the Nationwide. he is as genuine as he seems on TV. When we see him on TV. He is just a good guy and puts on no airs about who he is or what he thinks about on things. It is good to see him do so well and I hope he continues the good play. He is truly a fun guy to hang with. Joe his caddie is the same way.
Wishing them both the best of luck. I will be glad to get out and see them again.
