Round 4: AT&T National

Woods fails to break par for fourth straight day

For the fourth straight day, Tiger Woods failed to break par at Aronimink, where he shot a 1-over 71 Sunday to finish the week 4 over and well back in the pack.

tiger.woods.interview Did Woods make any progress in his game, though?

“I did,” he said. “I’ve driven the ball better this week than I have in a very long time. I just wanted to keep hitting it. That hasn’t been the case lately.”

On the green was a different story, however. Whether it was struggling to release the putter, or trouble with his lines, Woods’ putting wasn’t exactly sharp. Three times he took 30 putts or more in a round. He also missed 15 putts inside of 10 feet this week, which included going 12-for-18 from 4-8 feet. From 10-15 feet, Woods was just 2-for-11.

“I putted awful all week,” Woods said. “It is what it is.”

Up next will be the Open Championship at St. Andrews. Woods admitted that while it’s easier to fix his putting stroke than his long game, there’s an added emphasis on putting with good shots often leaving 50-foot putts.

He’ll get that practice in with four practice rounds at the Old Course before teeing it up there for the Open Championship in just under two weeks from now.

“Tee to green I felt great,” Woods said. “My iron game wasn’t as sharp as it usually is, but I did hit a lot of good iron shots.

“I’m looking forward to getting my lines, my feels, my numbers over there again. I love playing the golf course, and we’ll see how the weather is; you never know.”

As for the AT&T National, it represents just the fourth time in Woods’ career that he has failed to break par in a single round when playing a full 72 or 90 holes (non-major) on the PGA TOUR (see chart below).

If you factor in majors, Woods has failed to record at least one sub-par round 10 times when playing a full 72 or 90 holes on TOUR, adding in the following tournaments to the previous list (2007 Masters, 2003 PGA Championship, 1999 British Open, 1998 U.S. Open, 1997 PGA Championship and the 1995 Masters as an amateur). — Brian Wacker

While those who are non Tiger supporters are ready to stick in the fork, I am not. He did drive it well this week. His short game will come. Tomorrow he is playing in Ireland for 18 holes both Monday and Tuesday. And then off to St Andrews. His divorce is done and even though the tabs will be relentless in England, Tiger will be ready for number 15 at the Old Course. How fitting!

  • sesails

Debbie dreams in technicolor. The guy is toast.

  • Hank

    Tiger is a washed-up has-been.

  • arthur

    Dear Tiger Detractors

Sadly for you…he will be back

6 months, maybe even a year…but…he will be back

    Have a good day now

  • PJ

Even on a bad day(week) he still beats 90% of the PGA I agree with Arthur he will be back. He proved he was human and he will fix his life then be bale to concentrate on golf . When he is done in 30 more yeras he will have set records that no one will ever break.

  • Karl

All Tiger needs to do is play more often. The more he plays the better his game will get. Right now 2 times a month (at best) is not enough to be competitive.

  • Lorraine

Stick a fork in Tiger – he’s done!

  • EddyL

HEY WOODS, CAN YOU SPELL STINK?

  • Nancy Coleman

Fourth place in two majors is not all that bad.
When his personal life gets back in order his game will be better. Way too much talent to stick a fork in just yet.

  • Nathan

Before the 2010 PGA Tour season began I stated Tiger would not win this season if he decided to return. He is as talented as ever, but he does not have the focus on the golf course required to win golf tournaments due to his personal issues off the course. I would expect Tiger to win multiple times in 2011.

  • Noir-Golfer

He’ll be back… Bigger & Badder than ever….. so all of you short bus people continue to hate…. BTW, how do you like your crow?

  • Ryan P

I find it amazing that people think (or should I say wish) that tiger is over. He is currently playing some of the worst golf of his life and beating 90-95% of the tour pros!!! Once the problem in his ‘private’ life are dealt with and he gets some balance back he will be back as good as ever!
I can’t wait for tiger to play on a REAL course at St Andrews. We in the UK will respect him and let his golf do the talking. 15th major to come and I can’t wait to read the hate comments then!!! TIME WASTERS

  • Frankie Weiss

    Tiger,

Life is as you say ” It is what it is”. Just give your self some CALM down time. Every human make daily mistakes unless they have and are telling lies to themselves. SLOW…. down and LET IT GO ALL of the PAST that is what Destroys US on a personal level. I will PRAY as always for you personally, and as well as your GOLF game come back.
Golf is not worth viewing since your you are not doing YOUR GAME of Challange EACH EVENT.

  • GEORGE

I MUST GO BACK TO THE ST.JUDES CLASSIC AND MY THOUGHTS THEN AND NOW .
HERE IS A MAN THAT HAS PLENTY ; INCLUDING HIS VERY LARGE EGO . FOR HIM TO OPT OUT OF PLAYING IN THE TOURNAMENT — SO HE CAN GET READY FOR THE ‘ OPEN ‘ SHOWS ME WHAT HE IS UNDERNEATH . HERE IT WAS , A TOURNAMENT THAT WOULD HAVE BENEFITTED GREATLY BY JUST HIS PRESENCE THERE , A CHARITY AFFAIR TO BENEFIT UNDERPRIVILAGED CHILDREN , LOOKING TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE GOOD .
NOWWW, LOOK WHAT HAS HAPPENED SINCE — 00000 .
HE REALLY DOES NOT BELONG AMONGST THE GOLFING GREATS !!!

  • Paul Stevens

    It is what it is!
No golfer knows this better than Tiger.

To the detractors I would say .. “Let he who is without sin pluck the splinter from his own eye!”

I knew weeks a go things were going pear shaped behind the scenes – you could see it in his demeanour (I know I’m not Sherlock Holmes)

Tiger – Move on, Enjoy your life, and find some joy in your life (kids / Family / freinds who stuck by you / Golf) and smile outwardly at the fans who admire you for what you have done for the game.

The rest – thats none of our business?

    Paul
NB And sign some caps as you walk off the course – Ha Ha!

  • 7yrsclean

karl says all he needs it to play more then twice a month-he’s playing pretty much the same schedule as always-i think he might have missed two starts at the beginning of the year.he’s to good to never win again but he will never dominate-cus no one is scared by a scum bag lair

  • Machead

With a name like 7yrsclean it’s apparent that you are not the one to call somone a scumbag liar. I guess you are perfect now.

  • bob

I think this country is finally realizing that:

Golf is not Tiger Woods….and Tiger Woods is not Golf.

He’s just a Professional Golfer. PERIOD.

  • Ramon Cruz

Tiger, life is not perfect. So there for none of us are perfect. close your eyes, take a deep breath and move forward.

    God Bless.

  • Aaron

True Bob, but golf definitely needs/needed Tiger more than Tiger needs golf. Tiger would have been successful in whatever he decided to do, however, golf’s biggest draw without Tiger would be Phil, and I dare say, most of Phil fans are Tiger haters, and that is a large part of Phil’s legion of fans. Without them, instead of only being able to draw half of the ratings that Tiger can (See Mickelson in ’06 at the US Open with Tiger out versus Tiger in ’06 at the Open or PGA Championshionship with Phil not in the picture: Ratings go way up with Tiger playing – there is barely a discernable difference with Phil unless he has other star power with him, and even then, the ratings are nowhere near when Tiger is in the tournament or especially in the hunt), Phil would only be able to draw maybe a quarter of the fans he does, and the game of golf would not have gained much in popularity. It would still be that stiff old, out-of-shape, old white (yes I am white) man’s game.

Tiger dominated, played, and won with passion and enthusiasm that people had never seen, which brought in legions of fans that otherwise would not have tuned in, and those people will now like golf forever: Tiger or no Tiger. These are people who only came to find out that golf can be super fun because of Tiger. He also raised the bar, and changed the way his competitors practice (longer with more coaching), and changed the way golfers took care of their body, which has changed the way the up and coming generations prepare. He has done more for the game than any other person.

What does he get in return? Ungrateful, typical holier-than-thou fans who go for the jugular anytime sometime makes a mistake, but when they make a mistake, they ask other people to be understanding and for forgiveness. Tiger has done that and more by taking full responsibility and never pointing fingers at others who helped him (if he had done that you would say he wasn’t taking ownership, but when he doesn’t you call him a liar for not bashing those who enabled him – hypocrites!). What more do you want from this man? Please tell me. If you can explain to me how any of you are not just being “haters,” please do.

Oh, and if any of you say that Tiger “tricked you into believing he was a great guy,” no he didn’t. He did what every celebrity, athlete, etc. does, and kept his personal life to himself. That is WHY it is called PERSONAL. It was the media driven with help from the TOUR that tricked you into believing Tiger hype, and they did it for the money, of course. Tiger never claimed to be one thing he isn’t. You all just assumed. What did you want Tiger to say “hey everybody, stop loving me?” I just don’t get what you people really wanted him and want him to do. I don’t get why he is being held to so much of a higher standard than any other human being.

Finally, you know what they say about people who do not learn from history. Tiger has been “done” before. If I had a dollar for everytime I read someone, whether in a simple post or in a golf article by a golf writer, I would probably have been set for life before all this happened. You haters continue this wishful thinking everytime Tiger goes for a few months without winning and he is “finished.” And don’t get me started about how most of you, or people like you were saying he was finished in ’98, and finished in ’04. On top of that, in those times, he wasn’t going nearly through what he is now. However, he will get through all of this and move on and be as good as ever.

So, unless you have some concrete evidence that I don’t (like, you know that Tiger has the yips and will never make putts again), then I would be happy to listen. Until then, if all you have is “because he had something horrible going on in his personal life and is playing poorly because of it,” then you have nothing. You saw how Tiger played at the US Open a month after his dad died. That came from personal issues and not enough practice and reps. Well, this is like the same thing..he is losing his family practically (not saying he doesn’t deserve to), and with the media and all the issues with having to deal with the divorce settlement makes this so similar, except for one very important fact: this takes a lot longer than a death because he hasn’t gotten his closure yet. Once he does, you will see the old Tiger again.

So those of you who bask in hater heaven while Tiger does poorly, you better enjoy it while you can because the sun is starting to set. =)

  • jim

tiger is a selfish thug pr–k who is not worth the time of day..except to wh–es and some blid, stupid fans. i continually hope for his retirement

  • jim

take a deep breath and pay your ho..and move on to the next

  • jim

woods fails to make child support yet again…maybe he can see the kids in a week or two..just throw porno off the plane first

  • Richard leong

TW will be back as cream always rises to the top but in the meantime its great to see others win instead of him most of the time he tees up.With the huge payoff for his divorce guess he needs to work harder on his day job while relishing his new found ‘freedom’…

  • Jambo

    TO ALL YOU DETRACTORS!!!!

Nobody is ever perfect, not even Tiger, he is simply human and we all make mistakes. It has been a hard 9 months for Tiger, but he will bounce back. It will unfortunately take time, nobody can heal that quickly. This year is just about playing as much golf as possible. In the off season he can concentrate on fixing his game and probably employ a new swing coach. Tiger is not down and out, he has had other seasons with problems and injuries and people wrote him off. He proved everyone wrong and bounced back the seasons after. Tiger, you are still the best golfer in the world. Think posisitve and it will come.

  • don

Jim, your Sad. What an attitude. You must have terrible relationships. You should be glad the USA has the #1 player in the world on their team & hope he recovers from his screw ups, instead of making disgusting remarks & hoping fails. he’ll be back better than ever & if you don’t believe that, your stupid as well as ignorant

  • JR

He needs a swing coach and a life coach. Until then, not pretty.

  • Adam

For the first time in my life…I doubt that he will break Jack’s record! AO

  • Wildrover

Lots of (he will be back) comments, but doing what? This mans conscience has so much in constant motion, he will never be able to consentrate on winning a golf game. He has become his own worst enemy!

  • Rick Prasad

    GO TIGER

YOU CAN DO IT STUD!!!!! THEY CALL ME TIGER AND I ALSO A S..TU..D.

  • Des

Dont be emotional guys!Golf is a game that needs a incremental improvement in all departments.Give him time it will click just like that.
The Tiger that we are used to will be back and with a BANG!Just mark my words.

  • jim

hey don..tiger is payinga price for a life of arrogance, greed and manipulation..he is not the #1 player in the world by far..blind devotion is what leads many lemmings over a cliff..the loser is toast..

  • jim

because of his horrific sportsmanship example, i do hope the game is eradicated of tigre soon

  • jim

    love to all..except tiger..to him I hope retirement..soon

  • algarvio

Tiger is washed up. Noone is afraid of him. Look at his demeanor on the course. He’s lost it. He when from a lion, where he growled at anyone who irked him, to being a little kitty. I can see TW returning to the golfer that he was, that won’t matter because the golfers around him are no longer intimidated by his actions. He’ll be lucky to win another major. He’ll win another tournament or so per year, but the days of the bada$$ Tiger are Gone! All you Tiger droolers, keep it up. Keep buying the black hats, and the red shirts. Keep sitting on your fat couch, waiting for Tiger. Keep on saying that Tiger is the best. It’s because of people like you that this country is in the shape it’s in.

  • don

    it was bound to happen
no one person is “GOLF” as much as the
media would like. There are so many gifted,
fearless young guns and fun to see. Tiger will
be a factor in the years to come but never
    like before.
The game is now a world game.
    That’s great!

  • BD

All Tiger wanted in life was to be like Jack Nicklaus. Its all over now.

  • Jimmy

On condition that he even reads these comments. You need to focus your mind on your two kids, nothing else, when playing golf. You blame your putter, golf balls, but its you behind these two items, not anything else. Now stop whining and play golf. You need to let the fans inspire you, not the other way around. Now win…………..

  • wbrukie

    perhaps the problem is sex.
now that he is single he could be on the road tapping anything that moves.

  • earl

The absolute thing in golf is that you can never play well with something on your mind. Clearly Tiger has things on his mind….plus he is not used to NOT winning….His life will have to settle down and he’ll have to get to the point he laughs again…..he has the physical talents but right now its all mental and this what he’ll look like for a while….

  • 7yrsclean

Machead i’m far from perfect but a lot closer then mr woods i no longer live the life i use to and if tiger can do that he has a chance.but i don’t belive he thinks he did anything wrong except get caught

  • Walter

LoL, people are funny, anyone who says Tiger is done has to assume that 95% of every golfer is done? Tiger has played in what 5 tournaments this year? Maybe 4? Phil, Justin, Els, etc have an average of roughly 15-20, yet he has finished higher or tied those players in all but one of his tournaments….how is he toast/done/washed up? You may wish he was, but we all know he is to competitive, and with the wife gone, his guilt is gone, he paid the price, he is free to do what he likes, he will absorb himself in golf, and he will blow by the last 2 remaining records. SO for the haters/doubters base your facts on his skill not his personal life, grow up and and don’t speak unless you actually have something meaningful to say. People who say Tiger is washed up clearly have no idea about golf, and or should not be playing/watching/commenting on it. Thanks…let the flame wars begin….

  • Ken

I Belive that Mr. woods feels, that he doen’t deserve, the #1 ranking he has. I think that a slight change in an old saying is in order. when you take up clubs and walk out on a course, let no coruption toach you, for on that course, you step out of your life, and you belong to golf, and golf loves you, on the golf course no coruption can toach you let the nay sayers and mud slingers sling it can’t stick to you. I belive in you, now belive in yourself.
