Tiger Woods’ first swing of the third round of The Barclays was his worst. Instead of committing to his new swing, the one he’s been working on for the last few weeks, he fell back to his old one.
Actually, it was a combination of the two swings. And not a very good one. His tee shot at the opening hole sailed wide left, forcing Tiger to hit a provisional ball which he used to finish the hole. Result? A triple bogey — his first on a par-4 this season.

"I got caught between two swings," Woods said. "I wasn’t committed to it. That’s what happens. It was an awful golf swing."
But give credit to Woods for not letting the rest of his round unravel. He steadied himself with seven consecutive pars before a bogey at the ninth.
Once on the back side, he played bogey-free golf, with three birdies — including the last two holes — for a 1-over 72 that left him at 3 under for the tournament.
Outside of the one bad swing, Woods was happy with his day.
"I’m very excited about what I’m doing, how I’m hitting the golf ball," Woods said. "The shots that I’m hitting, the crispness coming off and how many shots I hit the last three rounds pin high, exactly pin high. That’s something I haven’t done all year."
While he still is not guaranteed a spot in next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, a decent score in Sunday’s final round should do the trick. Woods needs to finish between 50th and 57th here to advance to the second stage of the Playoffs.
Thus, Saturday’s poor opening drive may not cost him the Playoffs. But it did cost him something else.
“In the end, (it will ) end up probably costing me a chance to win the golf tournament," Woods said. "But I’m pleased how I sucked it up and got it back the rest of the day when it easily could have gone the other way.
"Hitting a ball like that, it can derail you and it didn’t. I got it right back."

Tiger could be toast for his career, at this point. While I am not discounting his ability to possibly turn things around, I can say with high probability that he won’t be winning any majors in 2011. Fast forward to 2012 and we see age taking its toll, Tiger losing additional distance, accuracy and touch. Add in the fact that he has to still be shamed and embarrassed over the fact that in one fell swoop, 15 years of image-crafting and marketing of himself all came crashing down, one fateful Thansgiving night.
The Bear’s records are probably safe for at least the next 10-20 years, as I don’t think that Tiger can ever regain an inkling of the consistency of form that made him golf’s greatest performer.
I was glad Tiger hung in there and overcame a very poor start. We want him to just relax and hit the shots one at the time and concentrate on what he is doing. I don’t think he needs to rebuild the best swing on the tour but just play like he knows how.
Ben Hogan survived a car wreck and went on to greatness. Now, we’re watching Tiger try to survive a personal train wreck and do the same. He’s lost or discarded his dad, two swing coaches, his wife and many of his corporate sponsors. Only Stevie remains and it’s hard to believe he can stay around indefinately with a loss of 90% of his income. Sadly, Tiger was better off the tee when he was a 14 year old amateur. Good luck, Tiger. We’re counting on you to rewrite golfing history. Find your way back soon!
Tiger we are ready for you to come out on Sunday and shoot a recoed breaking score,Good Luck and do your best.
Record Breaking Score, sorry for the mess up.
I think Tiger is doing what he needs to do to get his game back. His swing looks much better, I am glad he dumped the Hank Haney swing. To the earlier comment about losing 90% of his income, where do you get your numbers? Tiger is worth arguably a billion dollars, 100 million is a 10th of that in my book. His sponshership losses are around 30 million, and let’s not forget sales of tiger woods apparel is on the upswing again. Oh and he is designing 2 more golf courses as well. Money wise Tiger is fine, I see him surpassing Jacks record in the near future. Good luck Tiger, we are rooting for you here in Florida!
I was pleased with his swings except one bad one in the 1st. Thanks heavens he calmed himself down and did what he does best, to end the way he ended today. He needs to do better tomorrow for a better position, not at the top but anywhere in the middle will be great. I still count on you Tiger, get back to form soon, you are the reason I watch gold.
Lets not forget Tiger had lowest average score in majors in 2010, not bad for a train wreck survivor
Hey Tiger,
You ‘re a bum….I hope you finish last and all those talking heads who have their heads so far up your a.. can maybe start to comment on the abilities of all the other good guys on tour who dedicate themselves to playing golf instead of chasing pus…… You’re no role model for my kids and grandkids as I have said for years the media created this monster following you used to have. When are the folks going to realize you ‘re just a bum.
Tiger,
Considering what you’ve gone through, albeit through your own fault, you are, like the rest of us (except A O’D who is obviously a moron) only human and remember “every disappointment is a blessing in disguise” Take advantage of a great opportunity to habilitate your life which could, believe me, have been plenty worse if you had not got off the “skids”. That said, I join millions in wishing you all the very best in the future. Si Podemos y vaya con Dios
Re the above, please read “rehabilitate” instead of “habilitate”. Thanks
Look, everyone knows it sux when you screw up and you’re famous, because there is absolutely no way to suffer your mistakes in silence. All you can do is whether the media storm, then pursue improvement. People, lets please Leave Tiger alone…he has heart for the game of golf and the guts of a champion…he will survive. Don’t worry Tiger, they “love you long time” when you are on top…people are fickle. You’ll be back. SOON!
Very sweet A O’D. I’m sure you’ve never done anything in your lifetime that you’ve regretted. Good luck Tiger, we know that you have paid dearly in the last year, and there are still many compassionate and caring people that are rooting for you.
tiger woods! will never be the Dad his dad was.
His kids will never have the father he had.
Tigers Woods! will never be the legends other great golfers have been! Can’t hold a light to the players of olden days! If it wasn’t for the media, nobody would even care. All you have to do is watch his reactions on the golf course, he is only great in his own mind? Not in mine. He has no manners at all. He certainly is anybody to idol!
Today Tiger displayed the guts and focus which made him #1….. I feel truly blessed to be living in this time to see him play.Tiger is a true champion and an inspiration
Tiger is always happy with his game. Lately,it’s always coulda, woulda, shoulda with him. His game is always great except for one thing. Well as Rosanne Rosanadana used to say on Saturday Night Live, “if it’s not one thing, it’s another.” So lately, Tiger’s game is just great except for the one excuse he makes; be it a couple of putts that didn’t drop or, in this case, being caught between two swings.
I hope the media do not continue mentioning his past at every tournament. But that’s the way it is. It will probably carry on to his grave. But please people, respect his request for privacy. What’s done cannot be undone. Just hope he learnt his lesson. As for Elin, I really wish she will one day reconcile with him.
Tiger is doing well (despite the current turmoil) and I wish him the very best in all his future endeavor.
F@#& you A O’D you suck chances are u just hate winners because you SUCK.
A O’D…is absolutely right . Tiger may be a great golfer but as a human being he is total duffer . The only thing he was sorry for was that he got caught , and why did he get caught ? Because he is an arrogant egotisticle jerk . Nobody has the stones to call him on it that’s all . Guess what these same people would be calling Elin if she had been doing what America’s big hero was doing .
Me , I’m thinking , Barry Bonds , Roger Clemens , Tiger Woods…..American heroes all !!
Well…..A O’D and BB1 are both raving idiots who shouldn’t be allowed to make public comments, but I suppose they are both PERFECT people in every aspect of their lives!!!!!
Keep your head up tiger, awesome job recovering today! and tiger is nowhere near what bonds did, who cheated IN the game. nice call Big Al. Continue to fight tiger!
The greatest of All, Jesus, the Christ, said” He who is without sin cast the first stone. If you never did a bad thiong ever, condemn Woods out of hand. If you have, be quiet lest you be worse than he is. Failure is a teaching tool whether you think the person is sorry to be caught or not. Many a man who did wrong changed for the better. By the way, though the internet has hidden this fact, there was a golfing great who had an affair with a man’s wife and for years never played in that state because the husband threatened to kill him. All the internet sites have conveniently taken down that information because they want to crucify the Woods. There is always someone who did “it” first and survived. Woods will be back Today he tried his best villifying him makes no sense. He more than any of us knows how rotten his behaviour was.
Hey Big Al……nice comeback ! What a genius you are .
And R.L.Scott…first of all it is NOT Jesus “the” Christ but hey , aren’t you sweet ?
And all I can say to TWis #1…pull your head out of your butt , there is a whole real world out there .
It’s interesting how many people criticize Tiger for his personal life. How many of you would do any better, given his fame, looks, and money? I would like to think I would, but I suspect the candy store would be too much for me, too.
Tiger the golfer will return and we’ll tune in just as we always have. As for his personal life, it’s none of our business. He doesn’t criticize you, does he?
goldan days or not…tiger is the best golfer of all time. america has watched so much drama on tv and reality shows..we now have a growing nation of drama queens..Tiger screwed up, most people with issue don’t own up until it destroys their life or they get caught. He’s taken full responssibility, blamed noone but himself…and has played remarkable golf despite all the off course crap. Its sad we’ve got some miserable people on this planet who take joy in hoping others fail…good luck tiger…you will be back!
Tiger Tiger in the night
Bring on the girls
And XXXX em right
This is the way to get your golf game back
Everyone has an ego and i’m glad TW has enough strength to go out and grind thru the good and bad holes…in some ways that in itself is a good example for people to follow. We’re a nation that is growing in the number fo whiners every day. Bottom line…tiger is still number 1 and I don’t see that changing soon. how many have won more than 2 important tournaments all year. I don’t see Fowler, Rory, or any others winning every 3 weeks. When TW gets his swing tweaked and thoughts form off the course issues calm…he will dominate the tour again…we’re watching great history in the world of golf happening.
sorry for the typos…if you don’t like it…tough crap!
right on inspired….I have total appreciation for the way he grinded it out and clawed back with a great back 9. He could easily have thrown in the towel and had an early flight tomorrow…along with the rest of the season off.
If you’re reading this Tiger keep the intention up…You are the best golfer on the planet.
What about celtic manor October 1st, will he be there?
As a woman and a golf fan i think Tiger is on track to be a great dad and provider in the job he knows. now that things have been sorted with Elin they both now need to parent these children the best they can. Tigers job is golf and he is human and he will have good days and bad.
Final day Ryder Cup Singles TIGER V RORY just a thought…..
if our dear Lord, can forgive, who we are to judge and crucify Tiger for his weakness, Tiger, keep believing and have faith, all will be well and I also believe you will get your life and family back on track, I know that at the end you will be the greatest golfer that ever live, good luck and God Bless, you are the only reason I watched golf, your dedicated fan forever
Tiger iam 85yo,I think that you keep me geting me older.I just have the best times watching you on tv.Even if you get your self pissed off with a bad shot. You have the guts to keep comeing around. These other top golpherd just quit.P M and the rest of the big boys.Tiger from an old duffer your not the first guy in the world who got carried away with other woman and got caught.I hope that in the near future your ex will come around and forgive you for the children to have a father around house to bring up the be great kids
AO’D and BBI both of you sound as though you didn’t get past first grade, keep your stupid comments. You shouldn’t worry about Tiger. He is Educated and well off.Sound like both of you work on a garbage truck.Good luck to both of you idiots.
Tiger is clawing his way back to the top. We should probably be amazed at how well he is doing. It’s just hard to not see him win every week, be in the last group every week. We have gotten quite used to that. I’m betting we see Tiger in at least 3 of the last 4 tournaments. I’m thinking he can even work his way into the top 30 group. How amazing would it be if he won the FedEx? That would make my year. I’d love love love to see that happen. He’s still number one and it doesn’t look like anyone is going to be taking that away from him any time soon. He will always be number one to me. Good luck this afternoon Tiger. I see a 7 under day which catapults him into the next leg of the championship. Big time!
We all have our opinions of Tiger and what he has done outside the golf course. I believe what he does outside the golf course, as long as it is not illegal, is his business. On the golf course I still believe he is the man to watch. If Tiger is not playing I do not watch the golf game on TV.So far we have only heard what Tiger did off the golf course. It would be interesting to hear the other side of the story and why or what made Tiger stray away from the teachings of his Father and Mother.
BC
I love that old story, pre his “fame” one pro golfer to another…can’t remember who “Have you seen Tiger Woods?” “No, never played there!” So applicable again.
Talking with my junior golfing daughter about what Tiger did sucked, and it was unavoidable with the media coverage. Just the same, his score is still the first one I look for when I turn on golf. Tiger, not the media, draws people to the game of golf, I just can’t wait for the first victory. Hopefully next week in Boston.
Go Tiger What amazes me most is that you are still No1 with your poor golfing performance of late yet your counterparts at their best cant come up to the plate, hope you forgive yourself for messing up and play the winning game in life and golf that made you so great
tiger i know you’ll be back don’t rush yourself or your swing, you’ll be alright, and for all of you haters out there it happened it’s over now let’s move on, (GO TIGER)
man what a bunch of a kissers the guy was only 2 under for the last 17 your acting like he shot 63 like dj.the day he shot 65 it was lift clean and place and he was in the first couple of groups with perfect greens-did you all not notice as soon as he got the lead at eight under on fri.he started going backward he’s at 3 under now.he’s not going in the right direction-but all you who hate golf without tiger had at least 27 holes of tiger worship.
Don’t look back, there is a bright future in front of you. Be a real tiger since……. it is the king of the beasts.
I am so glad that Tiger never reads these comments…I should do the same. As a big Tiger fan and a golf professional myself, it does sicken me to hear some of the negativity coming from some people around the world about him. You can argue until the cows come home about the morals of his personal life, but really…who are we to judge anyway…and the plain fact will always remain…he is and will be the greatest ever athlete to have walked this planet, at least during my lifetime and before it, so why don’t more people take time to sit back and marvel at the amazing things that he can do with a golf ball and in the most amazing situations. Sure there are other great players out there in the world, we are not ignoring them, but this guy has done so much good stuff in his life so far and I don’t doubt for a minute he has more in him…It does surprize me that some people are so blinded by jealousy that they are incapable of seeing that. Their loss, I suppose…
Tiger, keep plugging along, keep practicing that new swing, and keep hanging in there. Patience is what will get you back to your former self. True golf fans and decent human beings have forgiven you for your personal transgressions. Forgive yourself, hold your head high, and play golf the way you know you can. Know this: I and many others still believe in you. People who want to bring you down were predisposed to their silly opinions years ago. Let’s go, Tiger! Game on!
