Three new faces in FedExCup top 5

The Deutsche Bank Championship is in the books and there are three new faces in the all-important top five in the FedExCup standings – and four others who played their way into the BMW Championship.

Matt Kuchar retained the No. 1 spot with his tie for 11th but Charley Hoffman made a huge move from No. 59 to second with his record-tying victory at TPC Boston. Hoffman shot a career-low 62 in the final round to seal the five-stroke victory, which was his fourth top-10 finish in his last six starts.

Hoffman’s ascent knocked Steve Stricker down a spot. The veteran from Wisconsin is the only player who started the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup among the top five who remains there.

Jason Day moved up 10 spots to No. 4 with his tie for second. Luke Donald, who also tied for second, jumped 12 spots to No. 5. Click here for the latest standings. The top five is important because those players control their own destiny when the Playoffs conclude at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola.

The four players who played their way into the field for the BMW Championship are Tom Gillis, Vijay Singh, Jason Dufner and Andres Romero. The Argentine had started the week ranked last at No. 100 while Gillis was No. 92 so both made prodigious jumps.

The four players who went into the week ranked among the top 70 but were eliminated are Padraig Harrington, Lucas Glover, Chris Couch and Charles Howell III.

Martin Laird, who entered the week ranked third in the FedExCup after last week’s runner-up finish at The Barclays, fell to sixth while Ernie Els, who held down No. 1 for 22 weeks and was fifth when he came to TPC Boston, has fallen to seventh.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods tied for 11th at TPC Boston and moved up 14 spots to No. 51. He’ll need another good week at Cog Hill, where he is the defending champ and a five-time winner overall, to advance to East Lake. He is the defending FedExCup champ.

Phil Mickelson, who had a roller-coasted 77 that included a double bogey and a triple bogey on the back nine, fell four spots to 14th. He had started the Playoffs ranked fourth.

The PGA Tours and the Masters are throwing up players who are able to hold their nerves and have magical 3/4 rounds – and then kind of disappear – don’t even make the cut.

Who won the British Open this year?!?

If some one can come up with a list of the winners in the top ten tournaments in the last 5 years – you will see what I mean.

If you ask me the top 5 golfers in the world still are Tiger,Phil,Vijay,Erney and Westwood.

So glad to see Matt Kuchar doing well. He’s a great player and a really nice person.
