Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, ranked second and fourth in the Official World Golf Ranking, have each committed to play in next week’s Farmers Insurance Open. It will be the 2011 PGA TOUR debut for each.

It will be the first start for Tiger Woods at Torrey Pines since his defeated Rocco Mediate in an 18-hole playoff at the U.S. Open in 2008. He missed the 2009 Farmers Insurance Open due to injury and in 2010 when he sat out the first three months of the season due to personal problems.

On Wednesday morning, Woods tweeted, "I’ve been working hard on my game, it’s game time hooah!!"

Woods has six career victories in this event, including each event from 2006-2008. Mickelson, a San Diego native who lives in nearby Rancho Santa Fe, won in 2000 and 2001.

  • JIMBO FROM OHIO IN JAX

    HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE’S BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wes

Oh yaaaaa……come on Tiger!!! Get back to where we love seeing you…..at the top!!!

  • Dave Onley

Glad to see Phil getting started for the 2011 season. Have a great year and try playing more tornaments. The game needs more people like you.

  • Tom Temple

Well well … it’s about time we heard from the two most over-rated has-beens on the PGA tour. In case you hadn’t noticed, some great golf is being “committed” without either of them.

  • bob

yeah !!!!!!!come on tiger you the man!!!!!!!!

  • keith

Finally! We get to see the two most exciting players in the world compete on the same course. Yea!

  • JR

Glad to see that both Tiger and Phil will play next week. Golf has given birth to wonderful young guns who have been winning and it will be great to see them joined by two of the best in the game. Go Tiger! Go Phil! Best of luck to both of you. Golf is a lot of fun when you both are playing.

  • Katzie

Played there 2 months ago and
Made 37 stable ford points on the south.
    What a day,what a course!
    Go south African players

  • mabuka

Tom Temple…a little out of touch with reality I’d say.

  • weston2010

Great news , cant wait for the tournament next week. Wish them both a great 2011.
Tom Temple -scrooge – I hope you call Arnie, Jack and Tom Watson overrated and has-been also. You have certainly demonstrated that you don’t belong on the planet. So please excuse yourself

  • Woody

Good for Tiger and Phil…wish both of them good luck. I think they are the two best in the game and they will prove that…again…this year. Yes some of the younger players have stepped up and that is also a good thing. As for those people who are already making negative comments…like Tiger being a “has-been”…COM ON MAN…lets tone down that stuff and concentrate on the good everyone brings to the sport.

  • Seth Gomez 69696969696969

Tom Temple…in case you hadn’t noticed, those has beens are 2nd and 4th in the world. and one of them won the most coveted tournament in golf last year. your an idiot man, go jerk off to some anime

  • terry

tom temple, you are smoking crack. how many over rated players win 14 majors? just checking. i’m all for somebody not liking the guy, but you can’t say that either of them are over rated.

  • smitty

    Question to the blog:

If you could watch the worlds greatest play annually only one event would you rather watch the Masters at Augusta or revolving locations for the Open Championship?

  • Larry New York

The beauty of golf, both watching professional and playing with friends is excluding people like yourself from the conversation. LEARN THE GAME OR STAY QUIET PLEASE

  • Pete

I don’t think you can call Tiger and Phil has beens.
They are both still capable of great golf and are exciting to watch.
Good luck to both on the 2011 tour.

  • gary

it’s good to see Tiger & Lefty back playing–but Daly will beat them both this week–like he did in ’04

  • mattefc

has beens, your sniffing glue mate, personally im so looking forward to the start of the pga tour with tiger and phil, im english but much prefer the pga tour, just a shame that california is like 9 hours behind so i will miss the coverage! people have for some delusional reason queastioned tiger before ie, swing change etc, but he has come back, i fully expect tiger woods too be number 1 in the world at the end of the season…still cant believe he did’nt win chevron though????

  • Nurah Isma

Tiger is my most favourite golfer in the planet.Tiger can surpass Niclaus’s wins (no doubt about it) and is very genius and A+++ class golfer.Look forward to his winnings this year.Go for it Tiger!!!!!!!!!

  • TheBest!!!!!!

Tiger is gonna start this year off right with a big win next week in San Diego!!!! Go Tiger baby!!

  • eddy

Both Tiger and Phil have been through life altering events in their personal lives recently, both seem to be holding up well. Personally, I believe Tiger should treat 2011 as his rookie year, he is no doubt a changed man, let’s hope the new Tiger has regained his focus. I am amazed that Phil is able to process all that has happened with his family and WIN the MASTERS. “Has beens”? That statement doesn’t even warrant a response.

  • Mike Allen

Well if Tiger is a has been could some one tell me who will have a chance to break Mr. Nichols record. Jack is the man. A great man. Have notice he is never negative. Oh also do know that Cink drop Butch Harmon. less be fair and comment on that. When Tiger switch swing coaches the world he is stupid. I just want know what did Tiger do you people that you hate him so much. I can understand about how his ex – wife feels, but when have you ever seen or hear Tiger talking negative about anything but him. I am tired of Tiger beating up on himself. How many times do have to say I am sorry. please respond.

  • reynaldo malonzo

We really miss Tiger Woods and we hope he can be back at the top. Golf is so dull without Tiger. Goodluck Tiger

  • William Minifee

Tiger is the greatest golfer in the world, every makes mistakes so if you have never made a mistake pal your name must be JESUS!

  • Doug

Welcome back Tiger…..golf and sports have missed you!!

  • Gordon

Why do people get all emotional when they talk about tiger and try and say really profound things about his life and future etc…
I would say tiger is a has-been more so than Phil.Someone mentioned the Chevron, losing that was indicative of the spent force he is. Technically he might be as good as ever and practice will ensure that, but emotionally and psychologically Tiger is spent. His potential is about the same as someone like Villegas… He might win something here or there but he’s a shadow of what he was and cannot recover the sense of being impregnable he had or the steely nerves he brought to his game. Shame but there you have it.

  • jlcs

As with quite a few people, I watch golf only when Tiger is playing. Something about him which makes golf interesting. I do hope that he had been working hard on his shot game (chipping and putting). Point is if you can’t put it near the flag but your putting is great, no issue. What is the point of hitting a shot to 4 ft from the flag when one cannot roll that in???

  • kwhite

It was like getting a late Christmas present reading that both Phil and Tiger will start their season next week! Say what you want, but the game is BORING without Tiger. I turn it off when I see no Tiger or Phil in the field. These new young guns are missing the X factor, you cant create that or buy it, you either have it or you dont. We have seen signs that a competitive Tiger is back, he just has to put it all together, and get in more rounds, which I think he has and will. Hooah!

  • matt

hell yeah. Its about time. Cant wait to see these two play again. Tiger is gonna do big things this year. Good luck to both of them.

  • Gordon

people that say things like Tiger and Phil are the only ones who have the “X Factor” are basically victims of the advertising and marketing campaigning that surrounds those two particular players.

There’s plenty of talented golfers out there, just as capable as Tiger and Phil, but they don’t get the attention, they don’t get their lucky/exceptional shots played over and over again on TV and Youtube etc.

There’s a lot of hype involved here. I’m not saying Tiger and Phil aren’t very good, capable players. If there’s one thing they have shown it’s consistency and that’s impressive in this game more so than perhaps any other.

But, there are a number of players who – despite lacking that consistency — are just as capable of playing impressively on any given day.

  • eddy

To assert that Tiger is “spent” might be a little extreme, perhaps “drained” would apply. There exists numerous examples of human beings overcoming setbacks and rising to the top of their professions. The media are largely responsible for the “aura of intimidation”, they reported “noone’s afraid of him now”, PRESTO!!! the aura is no more. I believe Tiger will get his stroke avg. to 68.5 in 2011, and win 4 events, including a major. His chances are as good as anyone’s, seriously.

  • Don

How can Tiger be ranked second in the world when he never plays or wins? Everyone else is playing every week.

  • Wes

GOrdon, gordon, gordon!! The ‘X’ factor is 14 majors my friend…don’t hate!! He’ll add a few more tour wins this year and maybe even another major!! Tiger Rocks thats the ‘X’ factor!!
I am guessing you are a little old’er?!?!!? It seems the ‘older’ gentlemen feel this way about Tiger…it’s too bad!!

  • john

What a joke the World Ranking is. Tiger is 2nd in the world and hasn’t won in well over a year and played in only a handful of tournaments since cheating on his wife and family came to light. IMHO this thing has been tweeked to keep him at #1 because they know he drives sales of just about everything from golf balls to viewership. Now he falls only one spot, what a joke.

  • Wes

Easy John!! Westwood is #1 and what has he done?!?!?!?! I agree the ranking criteria is off…but Woods by far deserves to be there…time will tell if he deserves it after this year tho…I agree.

  • Rich

What planet are some of you people on. the media and the PGA have never treated the other players like they have TIGER. Ever since the movable rock the size of car hood that lead to a win in the Arizona desert has th PGA or the media ever looked back. As to to his vast misbehavior to his so called high morals and to his wife who had no idea the ride she was taking he should not be looked up to by the PGA,media or the totally sickining commentators who seem to have forgotten their own morals. one factor that all the practice will never get back was his luck, which seems to have left him. What a surprise Good luck to Phil who so much a better person. Just try and get a autograph from either one and then tell yourself who is the better person

  • Vinny

Good to see Lefty is there but I could care less if Woods plays or not. He curses and throws his clubs way too much for me to be a fan. He does have an impressive overall record for his PGA career but how can I watch with my kids and justify him acting childish when he is an adult and a pro?
I like a lot of the young & older talent in the field. This makes for interesting golf every weekend… who will win this tournament??? Furyk, Els, Lefty, R Moore, D Johnson, B Watson, Donald, Poulter, Villegas, Kuchar, Hoffman, McDowell, Mahan… these are our favorites and a bunch are usually at the top of the leader board and make watching golf fun for us.
No need for bashing if you like or dislike Tiger…. It is a free world so root for who you like and remember, Fairways and Greens!

  • mattefc

gordon, advertising, marketing, lucky shots repeated etc. the simple fact is he will probably go down as the greatest golfer to ever pick up a club, and that is a fact. im very proud to play golf occasionly and watch regularly during an era of his brilliance. you want see another tiger woods for a very long time, put simply he is a one off

  • cory

would love to see tiger miss the cut!!!

  • coridu

Are you guys kidding. Man, i could care less what Tiger or any other golfer or professional athlete does in there personal life as long as it does not effect my directly. Tiger is the best golfer i’ve seen in my life time and i’m 40. To say you dont care if he plays or not because he cheated on his wife is stupid and you take it wayyyyyy to personal. He was/is the best golfer on the planet…..PERIOD. I love watching him play golf and i could care less what he does off the golf course.

  • Ed E

Welcome back Tiger, great for the game
Bring on the best in golf and go for the kill.

  • weston2010

Rich, I dont know what tournament you watched in Arizona, but Tiger did not win it, and the Rules guy was there and allowed the rock to be moved( the rules was in force for this). You cannot win 87 tournaments worldwide, including 14 Majors based on luck, if such a thing existed ,even you would be playing golf for a living. It is a good thing that human beings are not killed based on their moral behaviour, because there would be no humans alive in the world today. The Creator of the Universe has dealt with the sin factor. You leave that alone, since you are not withot sin.

  • Crownboy

I have to agree with vinny…I can’t stand watching a supposed “grown man” cursing and flinging clubs back at his bag..acting like a spoiled brat…great golfer…but hey..bonds was a great baseball player and still an ass in public..I don’t root for or against tiger or any golfer..I just like to watch great shots hit and someone stand up under the pressure and overcome it

  • weston2010

@ Vinny, you are a grown human. You are incredulous! Use Tiger’s “behaviour on the course” as a great teaching moment for your kids. Dont waste the opportunity.I hope when you see your kids watching the garbage on TV, you also use those moments instead of banning them from TV. The bad language/ behaviour is all over the culture and unless you plan to lock your kids in a box, you better set about educating them.

  • Wes

Weston2010…took the words out of my mouth!!
    GO TIGER GO!

  • mattefc

your not wrong weston, i for example see a lot of players spit, slam clubs etc, but, beacause it is tiger it seems to be over scrutinised and there in is the issue… he is the greatest golfer too this date, so the pundits, cameras etc etc milk it

  • Jim

Every golf fan out there want to see the best golfers play against each other. You haters need to go to your support groups and hold hands. The rest of us will enjoy the competition. Go Tiger and Phil.

  • rich

The tournament with the BOULDER took 5or6 college guys to move it and to my memory he did win it, it was back in the late 90′s Not to get personal but do you think the guys at the country clubs are willing to stand next to Tiger as a role model. And what moral role would you look up to him for. Seems like the people look at these athelets as being above any rules that apply to the rest of us. I to think Tiger is a great GOLFER but to compare him to others in sports or especially golf he is way down the list as being a role model for any reason. i bet he is quite lonely on the 160′ ship that he own except for the people he has paid to come aboard. Have any one you know been on the boat!!!

  • Jim

It’s better than being lonely with no boat.

  • Gordon

Mattefc and Wes, I didn’t criticise Phil or Tiger as golfers. I have a problem with the hype that surrounds them.

When you think about Tiger though, there really isn’t any single aspect of his game that you would say was superior to everyone else’s. The reason he’s so phenomenal is down to the steely consistency he brought to the game over about 10 years. It’s a very difficult game to dominate and be resoundingly consistent in.

Phil, I like, but he hasn’t really done much, what you talking about a couple of majors? I remember they thought he would never win one but here we are. In 20 or 30 years, maybe less, he’ll be unheard of.

But I honestly think Tiger is finished. The impregnable impression he gave is gone forever — the cat is out of the bag, we now know he is human.

His putting I would describe as below average on the Pga now and , interestingly, it’s possibly the one aspect of his game you would have said was the best in the world 2 to 10 years ago. His driving and accuracy with irons has always been problematic; he admits that in his book, that directionally he was weak. He’s always compensated for that by making sure his judge of distance was good.

Remember that both of these guys are getting older and as you get older your putting generally deteriorates. Tiger might win one or two more majors, I doubt it, but one thing is for sure, the tiger we all adored is gone forever.

  • eddy

Geez, all these guys did was confirm attendance at a golf tournament. It seems many people are not going to forgive Tiger, that is their right. He is still gonna go to work, just like Phil and every other pro, and noone can be certain of his future, not even him. Whatever “side” we’re on when it comes to Tiger, we’re all tuned in, and that is good for the game. Do Tiger’s detractors think he should quit his job and evaporate into thin air? So Lefty and Tiger are at the Farmer’s, I’ll be watching, so will you.

  • Larry

Never had a chance to appreciate Jack in his prime.Heard for years about the next Nicklaus,(Norman,Couples and so on)no one ever had the focus. Jack said he’ll be the best if he doesn’t let the money get in the way.He let something else get in the way. This year will tell if he can begin to re-focus. I for one hope he does because It’ll be tough to see another golfer with a better game.

  • Ross

    Your the man Phil!!

  • Gordon

Eddy, forgive tiger for what? He hasn’t done anything that requires any of us to even consider forgiving him. I for one haven’t mentioned his private life, but I am interested in how his game has collapsed as a result of it.

As for Phil, there have been rumours about him too but I don’t care, all I’m interested in is his golf. He seems like a great guy too, don’t get me wrong, but there are plenty of great guys I don’t take an interest in, it’s the golf that matters to me.

Anyone seen Tiger putting lately? It isn’t pretty, and that is going to haunt him this year.

  • wes

Alright…lets remember that it has only been roughly a year and a bit since Tiger came out of the closet!! Give the guy some time…his putting did suck as of late…but guess what…I bet it is on fire this year. He is a creature of habit…and now, all he has is golf..If he struggles this year, then we all can say…”ok Tiger in trouble.”
I myself, love Tiger and hope to make a tournament to meet him asap!!!
If your life was on the line..and it came down to a 10ft putt…who would you rely on??? Tiger or Westwood or?????? TIGER all the way!

  • eddy

Gordon, Tiger Woods deceived the world and violated the public trust, allowing regular people to believe he was a somewhat different person. Many people idolized Tiger not just for his game, those people feel they were duped, they are angry, read the comments. “Forgive” is another way of saying “move forward”. I expect Tiger to be contending and winning in 2011, Phil too, could be next week, who knows? Any one on Tour can and does win, over 30 guys last year.

  • WILLA FORE

“Go Tiger!” “Go Phil!” “Go Chicago Bears”

  • Don

Wes your comment about being older is correct and as you do maybe you will understand more about life and how much to belive or not as too what is told to you by the media and the corprate world.

  • Jim

Don, Where do you get your information? Who do you believe?
