PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — It’s not exactly a claw, but it’s hardly conventional, either.
No matter. Vijay Singh’s unusual new grip with his left hand low, coupled with a different belly putter, worked wonders at the Northern Trust Open where he finished second to Aaron Baddeley.
"I don’t have any name for it, but if it keeps going in, I don’t care what you call it," said Singh, who used just 27 putts on Sunday and ended up first in putting for the week.
Singh gave Baddeley a run for it on Sunday, closing with a 69 that moved him to 10 under but still shy of what would have been his first victory since 2008. He said the new "look" to his stroke was key and he saw the lines on the greens really well, too.
"It’s been a struggle for me all my career with putting," the World Golf Hall of Famer said. "I’ve had great spells and not so good ones, and I tried to get a grip where I feel really comfortable with, and hopefully this is the one.
"It anchors my left hand pretty nicely, and I don’t have any play with my right. … The way I putted today I think that’s the best putting week I’ve had probably all my career. So putting four good putting rounds together, that’s something good."
Singh has battled injuries over the last couple of years and admits that he may have returned to competition too early on occasion. He’s fully healthy now, though, and already has two top-10 finishes — matching his total for all of last year — in just five starts.
Singh also tied for third at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last month. While he played well there, though, breaking 70 in all four rounds, the closing 66 moved him nine spots up the leaderboard. On Sunday at Riviera, Singh was in the hunt all day.
"It’s feeling pretty good," Singh said. "I was into it. The game is starting to come around, although I wasn’t hitting the ball as solid as I wanted to. I was driving the ball good, which was good, putting myself in good position, but my iron play was not very good.
"But I’m putting well and I’m scoring well. … That’s a great, great thing to have when you’re putting well. I haven’t done that for a long, long time. This is going to get me some places."
Singh, who briefly slipped out of the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings last month for the first time in 21 years, isn’t eligible for the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship next week.
Instead, he’ll celebrate his 48th birthday on Tuesday. Singh will be the first to tell you that aage is just a number, though.
“I’m feeling good, and I think I’ve still got it,” he said. – Helen Ross
Good game Vijay.Change of putter has done you good. I can see you completing the Grand Slam this year. No more blood pressure for your fans now that you have thrown the “kudari” away. God Bless.
Great week, Vijay. My daughters and I came up to Riviera to watch you on Thursday and followed you the whole day and it was pretty obvious you had figured something out. Its great to see you knock in those 6-footers like everybody else out there. 65-footers are good too! Have a good birthday.
I’m happy that Vijay is getting back to his old form and his infectious laugh after his 3rd round was a pleasure to watch. Happy 48th Big Guy. You deserve a rest before you play your best at the Masters. I’ve been following your rise and your injuries, so take care and heal well the next time it happens again. My family is your biggest fan. Namaste.
Well done Vijay. It’s great to see you play well again. Believe in yourself and you will be in the winners circle again soon.
Happy Birthday.

Vijay’s still got it! Happy Birthday and hope you stay healthy all year. If you keep playing like this, they are going to raise the age requirement for the senior tour.
Great to see that look of confidence & smiles.Have a great Birthday and look forward to seeing you outperform the field in the 2011 season
Good, solid game of golf Vijay!
The 2nd place finish moved him to 49th in the world ranking from 82. A few more solid tournaments would put him within the reach of Tiger & Phil. Very sad to know that he won’t be on the TV next week. Sometimes a break here and there would definitely help to play better.
Can’t say he is turning 48 (or whatever). Compared to him some of the other young guys in the tour look very much older than him(in appearance and movement)
Happy Birthday Vijay!!
When those 28 footers start dropping in consistently along with a few 60+ footer every now and then, you know the putter is working huh!!! 1st in Putting for the week is well justified.
I hope you give these young guns a run for the money for many more years to come!! To heck with the Senior Tour!! I sincerely hope that you can win a Major on the main circuit after turning 50 just to prove the point… Tom Watson came real close and it is a bitter stingy feeling more than any other that he has experienced in his illustrious career. If I did that and was 59, I would go into a deep shock and never come out of it…:))
Great going Veej. Good to see you in such good nick, especially with your putting, after such a long wait. I’ve been wanting to see you crack the top five early this year and you haven’t disappointed. Great to see your usual smile and confidence. Putting is oh so! razor sharp.
Wishing you a very happy birthday and truly look forward to you on the winner’s podium in your next start.
Excellent job Vijay. Releif to your fans and God bless your efforts.
Way to go Veej!
So good to see you back in the Top10 (AGAIN THIS WEEK!)and putting with confidence.
Happy 48th! mine was back in August, little brother :)
All the Best!
