Garcia closes with a 65

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — It could have been a great round. Instead it was, uh, nice.
That’s the way Sergio Garcia termed his closing 65. The one that, had he finished par-birdie instead of bogey-par could have tied the course record.
Considering he needed an eagle in the second round to spark a rally just to make the cut, you might have thought this finish — the 65, an 8-under 280 — would elicit a smile. It didn’t.
“Yeah, I definitely think today was a nice round,” said Garcia, who hit it into the bunker behind the green at the eighth and didn’t get it up and down. “But I don’t know. It’s kind of been like that for the past three months or so. I’ve been saying that I’m feeling better. I’m definitely hitting the ball better. Unfortunately, nothing’s been happening on the weekend. I’ve had some rounds where I played really well and I shot 2‑under and I’m moving back.
“But today finally things seemed to happen a little bit. I played nicely, I hit some good shots and rolled some good putts in. Then just a little bit unfortunate the two bogeys, to bogey 8 and not be able to birdie 9. Other than that, it was, yeah, it was a nice, positive way to finish a tournament.”
Consider this the next step for the 2008 PLAYERS champ, who is working to balance his life. He took time off last year to get his head straight. And turn his game around.
This will be his third top 15 of the year. Last year he had just two all season.
“I’m definitely hitting the ball better,” he said. “Every aspect of my game has been improving. I think my chipping is obviously better, my putting is a little more consistent.”

Sergio is almost as overrated as seve was…hed be better off on the european tour …still probly wouldnt win though ….hes a choke and he cant putt
Sergio is trying to get into the top 50 so he doesnt have to qualify for the US Open. He will probably have two more strong performances the next two weeks as well. He needs to get his putting up to the standard of his ball striking to contend.

This was a big confidence for sergio today. I think that he will qualify for the U.S. open one way or another. I don’t understand all of the critisism that is out there for his putting. He is starting to really putt well and is making many more of the 5 footers. He will win a major.

Sergios game will come back soon… he is an excellent golfer- form is temporary and class is permanent!! Some people might care if Sergio is at the US Open because they are fans and enjoy following his career.
I’m sure you have certain golfers you follow and that others couldn’t care less if they are playing. That’s just what being a sports fan is about. If everyone cheered for the same people, it’d be no fun.
Your comment saying Seve was overrated shows you, unfortunately, know absolutely nothing about golf. I imagine you just watch to follow Tiger and like to shout ‘get in the hole!’.
