Choi not surprised by Toms’ bounceback

IRVING, Texas — K.J. Choi said Tuesday he was not surprised to see David Toms win the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, just one week after Toms lost to Choi in a playoff that decided THE PLAYERS Championship.

Choi, one of the favorites this week at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, is making his first PGA TOUR start since winning at TPC Sawgrass. He said Toms’ confidence level, and his ability to shake off that missed 3-1/2 foot par putt in the playoff, played a part in the Colonial victory.

"I don’t think he won last week by chance," Choi said. "I mean, he was definitely due. I think for him losing the tournament, THE PLAYERS Championship, wasn’t the end of the world.

"I think he gained a lot of confidence during that week, and I think he said that as well."

Choi also has plenty of confidence coming into this week. He’s playing in the HP Byron Nelson for the first time since 2007. Choi now lives in the area after living in a suburb of Houston for several years.

Although a little tired after just returning from his native Korea — where he announced that he will host his own professional tournament, the K.J. Choi Invitational, this October in Incheon outside Seoul — Choi is looking forward to playing in front of his fans in the area.

"There’s a lot of fans, local fans, waiting to see me play this week," Choi said. "It kind of … motivates me to play.

"The Byron Nelson tournament being a hometown tournament for me since I live here now, it’s going to be very exciting."

KJ is such a gentleman and a true ambassador for the game of golf. You never find him talking smack; he shows up to play, not to play around. I hope for many more impressive wins from Choi.
