IRVING, Texas — Less than 30 minutes into his round, Dustin Johnson had already hooked a tee shot in the water, leading to a double bogey on a hole that’s one of the relatively easy par 4s at TPC Four Seasons Resort.
Not exactly the kind of start he was looking for.
No matter. Johnson shook off the double at the 11th hole (he started his round on the 10th) and played the rest of his round in a bogey-free 6 under to finish with a 4-under 66 in Thursday’s first round of the HP Byron Nelson Championship.
Although a water hazard runs down the entire left side of the fairway at the 11th hole, Johnson opted to use his driver off the tee instead of playing it safe.
"I usually always hit driver there," Johnson said. "It’s just the play that I like. Even when you lay up, thee is a small fairway to hit it in, so I like hitting driver and just hooked up. Hit a terrible drive, made a bad swing,"
Johnson said he was "a little frustrated" but he didn’t get mad. He rolled in a 21-foot birdie putt on the next hole, made a 23-footer two holes late, rolled in a 14-footer to birdie the 17th and had a 35-1/2 foot birdie at the sixth.
"I rolled the putter well all day," Johnson said. "I had a lot of putts that looked like they were going in that didn’t, so I was pleased with my round today."
Good example of keeping each shot separate, Dont let one bad putt or drive ruin the remaining 18 holes.
Solid round DJ , Good luck the rest of the way.
Wow that is a true professional. It is so difficult to shrug off a bad shot like that. To roll in a 23 foot putt on the next hole. Wow.
