DUBLIN, Ohio — True to what has been his form this week, Rickie Fowler was two holes away from a really good score in the final round of the Memorial Tournament.
He went out in 31, closing the front nine out with a string of three straight birdies and making an early move on the leaderboard. But Fowler made double bogey on both par 3s on the back nine and a bogey at the 18th on the way to a 69.
For the week, Fowler made one eagle and 26 birdies to go ton the plus side of the ledge. But the man who finished second a year ago also had 15 bogeys and four double bogeys to finish at 4 under for the tournament.
That said, Sunday’s round was "a lot more up (than down)," Fowler said. "I just had basically two downs, doubled 12 and doubled 16. It happens."
Fowler plans to go home to California and take a few days off before beginning his preparation for the U.S. Open. He’s making enough birdies and keeping the ball in play that Fowler is optimistic.
"We did make mistakes out there and a few bad breaks, stuff going to happen like that," Fowler said. "But I’m hitting a lot of good shots, hitting a lot of solid golf shots, driving the ball a lot better than I have been all year.
“So to see that going into an Open, you need to drive the ball well, you need to keep the ball in play. I think if we can minimize the mistakes from this week and keep rolling, I like the way the game is right now going into the Open."
Victim? Victim to mistakes? Rather victim to stupid fashion. He dresses like a garbage man. Victim to bone headed decisions perhaps. He makes a ton of birdies but can’t keep out of trouble. He’ll be forgotten in a few years, like so many other “new Tigers”.
over rated. How can he be rated so high and has never won anything??? Looks like PGA turned on to him and are trying to make him the next Tiger. Give me a break!!
I agree with Niklas, but he’s an Okie. I suspect this circus clown will go down in golf history as the best golfer who never was.
As fffriday points out, the media over-adores him, so he’ll always have a flashy website, date cute blondes and make a good living.
Just tone down the fashion a bit
Ricky,
and You will be able to FOCUS more
on the task at hand…
It is easier to WIN repeatedly
by coming from
behind with stealth
than it is to have all the BUZZ
on You at ALL times that SAPS your
energies all along the way and
leaves your tank running on fumes
as You come down the stretch….
Just a *thought from a 20 year Veteran
tour Caddie.
It would be nice to see Rickie win on the tour, but he has won, he has such class both on and off the course, if you have a young man who thinks he wants to be a professional, then watch Mr. Fowler and how he conducts himself. I had the the pleasure of meeting him, CLASS ACT all the way. His time will come when he will win an event. Until then just keep up the great play and the class act that makes you a winner.
Rickie is a good kid. I have known him since he was 13 playing junior golf and he has always been a polite and humble young man. Give him some time, it is only his second year on tour. Not every new player has to be Tiger Woods.
Bizarre 4 day scorecard. 26 Birdies, 1 eagle, 26 pars, and a final score of -4. Like a kid with ADHD that forgot to take his adderall.
That said, I like his style. Doesn’t waste time, can step on the gas, just needs to stay off the wall in turns 1, 2, and 3. Go Rickie.
Rickie is q great young man and a super golfer. Let’s not forget he is still learning , like rory , and is very young. When u look like he does at that age and u can seriously play , why would u dress like a boringold fart?? The colur is good for golf and making young people , which golf needs, tune in. Also, golf does not need a new tiger woods, one is enough thanks.
Why does this guy warrant coverage. He is a nice player, but there are a lot of nice players who do not get wall to wall press coverage but who have done a lot more than Ricky Fowler – you know, like win. Right now Ricky is the Ty Tryon of the 2011 tour.
He gets coverage because he’s exciting. He plays aggressively, dresses how he wants, and also gives good interviews. Its refreshing to see someone different out there. 95% of the tour dresses identically and conservatively as they play to the fat part of green and settle for pars. Rickie dresses like a can of Sunkist and guns right at every pin, often costing him shots but always bringing exciting. As he matures I’m sure his game will get smarter and his style less noticeable but right now its awesome to watch a kid who goes against the grain.
I hope he continues to tune out all you conformists. GO RICKIE!!!
Give Rickie a break. The kid has game!!! He will mature and will win a lot of tournaments for years to come.
Um, Mr. A Moulton, what exactly do you use for brains? I have an idea and it rhymes with spit.
Why don’t you go count up how many cuts Ty Tryon has made, and then count up all the prize money TT has made, and then hit yourself in the face with a shovel. What a douche you are. Rickie Fowler has made more cuts in two years that Ty Tryon has made in 15 years, and he has made, oh only about 4 million more dollars in the same time period. Rickie Fowler will win this year, he will win multiple times on tour, and he will win a major–or three. I guess some people like making stupid comments and make themselves look like an idiot– job well done A.Moulton, job well done.
