BETHESDA, Md. — Two majors. Two second places.
A tie at the Masters. Solo at the U.S. Open.
So if you’re not paying attention to Jason Day, you should be.
The 2010 Byron Nelson champ, the 23-year-old from Queensland, is turning into a major force. He shot a 64 in the second round of the Masters; a third-round 65 here at Congressional Country Club. He shared second — two shots behind winner Charl Schwartzel — with fellow Aussie Adam Scott at the Masters and finished 8 shots behind Rory McIlroy here, closing with a 68 to McIlroy’s 69.
"Obviously it’s my first U.S. Open,” said Day, who has seven top-nine finishes on the TOUR this year. "Very excited that I finished second. I’m not going to go home and cry because I got whooped.
"But Rory, you can’t beat a guy that’s gone out and played as well as he has this week. He just didn’t miss a beat, played phenomenal golf, and I played really, really solid golf over the weekend, which I really wanted to do, and I’m very, very happy to finish second, which is nice."
In so many other years, 8 under would have won. This week, Day’s remarkable week was just the second lowest score by one of the fast-rising 20-somethings.
"Yeah, obviously if you go around to each country, each country has their own rising star coming up,” Day said. "This is the start of it, and obviously Rory is leading it, and there’s a bunch of other great golfers out there that obviously we need to work a little harder to get to the level of Rory. But you’re right, we really are going to start a new generation, and it’s really fun. I think it’s great for golf."
Lovely to watch, I think this is the start of a new woods v mickelson or a norman v faldo, with McIlroy v Day i would love to see that.
this is the start of new generations of golf..new breed..amazing talent…good for the game of golf..
Jason is an incredible talent and he’s also a well-grounded and genuinely good person. His wife and his coach/caddy are also fantastic people and a perfect fit for him. I told him when he was 17 that I knew he’d be one of the best. It’s great to see him rising to the top. I won’t be shocked if he takes home the Claret Jug or the Wanamaker this year.
Well done Jason ! All the Aussies are with you mate! Good luck at the British Open.
Great stuff Jason, all of us down at “Royal”(ha,ha) Talley Valley on the Gold Coast have been following you since you were on the TV golf show, you must have been about 16.It,s been a great ride watching you every time you tee up. Your manner & play really gives us a reason to get up early (4:00am)every weekend. Thanks for giving us something to look forward to.
Well done Jason, great name!!
That was a remarkable performance. Even if it was a runner-up result, it was in a major and the second in succession. I have no doubt that the way you play your game, you will be a major champion pretty soon. This Filipino is proud of you.
Some Day, one Day, the Day will come for jason Day to be a major Champ.
I am waiting for that Day….
Have a good Day guys.
The “Day” will come for Jason.. Fantastic play!
great effort again.. has given me a lot a pleasure over last 7 years tracking the progress. The next step is to try and get a good start!!!
Mabuhay! Jason Day. And thank you for making me as well as 100% of my Fil-Am friends proud and happy.
Millions of us are rooting for you.
I have a photo of you and my nephew Marikka in my Darwin office and I can’t believe where you have gone with your golf.I am pleased I have met you.
For what it’s worth, Jason beat Rory on Saturday and Sunday.
Jason’s putting was sooooooooo good..in awe of the young man..so mature for his age..as is Rory…good riddance to Tiger and his antics quite frankly.
To see you Jason and all the other Aussie golfers playing so well makes me feel proud to be Australian.Congratulations on a fantastic effort.
jason well done on your great results this year. its fantastic to see you doing well. i remember talking to at Karalbyn golf club and chatting to you on the practice area of hills international golf course and asking you when are you going to turn pro. well here you are today.. bloody fantastic.
Well done Jason Day you did yourself and Australia proud. Well done to Rory I think we

Great play again Jason,
Makes me feel so proud to be a Filipino. Good luck at the Open.
Good work Jason and good luck for the British Open.
See you in Melbourne in November.
Jason. Unbelievable you good Aussie. I am from your home state. Over in America in September and would love to catch up in some way. My wife and I both play golf – 40 rounds in 30 days – and spend a month or more enjoying our holiday. Look forward to hearing from. Cheers Warren and Janice

Cheers,Mike
Congrats Jason on a wonderful US Open result in your debut. We were happy for Rory’s win, but as Aussies & Qlders extremely proud of your great performance. Wishing you all the best for this year and in the last 2 majors. Your day will come.
Well done Jason what a gutsy effort. After following you from your teens until today it is now very clear that fullfilling your ultimate goal of World Number ONE should no longer be a dream, this is something that is very achievable.GO get it Jason its there for the taking. I like a lot of Aussies hope to see you at the Presidents Cup.I play at Gailes and you are well remembered there as well. Once again well done and give it your all in the future.
Jason Day may prove to be the toughest/gritiest of the rising young crowd. He appears to have a very good work ethic too. He has all the shots accept at this point a controlled Tee game. during this past winter I researched the number of young phenoms on the rise and came up with 32. The discouraging part of the exercise is to discover that playing success has not elevated the hunger for improvement by the US youth movement. Money in the pockets of our young phenoms seems to find them “headed for places like South Beach” rather than to work at the practice facilities so available to them. One of my picks, Michael Sim, appears to be injured. Anthony Kim has the party desease it seems. Schwartzel was one of my 32,won the masters, and finished top ten in this US Open.Never a consideration by Monte for the Ryder Cup team and he may have been a better choice than the ignored Paul Casey. I am not sure Dustin Johnson’s hands are soft enough to develop his current mediocre short game. He’ll need a good short game in this new class of total players.
From a troubled teen to a PGA all-star .. quickly becoming a fan fav – a very animated player.
Ya know what, take Rory outta the picture and this guy won this week!
I expect we may see at least 1-2 wins from Jason during the remainder of the season :)
Congrats Jason, for playing so well both at the MASTERS and the US OPEN..it makes me feel so proud of you, being a half filipino and an aussie.. I cant forget when Ive met you, your lovely wife, and your father in law …at the Merrill Lynch shootout in Naples, Fla…Now, the media,etc..will talk more about you…
Jason, wished you!ll play more often…love watching you play on TV…makes me feel nervous , but happy cheering and praying for you…best wishes always..
WELL DONE MATE/. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO LET THE CLUBS DO THE TALKING FOR YOU, UNLIKE MOST OF THESE OTHER COMMENTS I’VE BEEN READING I STILL THINK RORY’S NOT THE ONE YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR FUTURE/.
