Rickie Fowler tumbled out of contention with a final-round 74 Sunday.

By Brian Wacker, PGATOUR.COM

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. — It didn’t take long for Rickie Fowler’s round to get away — two holes to be exact.

It was on No. 2 where Fowler hit it in the squirrely rough at Aronimink, missing the fairway right. His next shot didn’t come out like he expected and landed in a greenside bunker. Four shots later Fowler’s ball finally found the hole and with it went any chance of winning his first career title.

“I played really well all week but today couldn’t get anything going,” said Fowler, who shot a 4-over 74 to tumble from a share of the lead to a tie for 13th.

“The ball was going where I was looking for the most part, but I didn’t make much today [on the greens]. I got stuck behind the eight-ball early.”

For Fowler, it was another opportunity that slipped by. He was in contention in Phoenix last year and again at the Memorial tournament. He failed to win both times.

“It is frustrating,” Fowler said. “Just a tough day, but I learned a lot. It was great to be in that position. It’s good to see what other guys do in the same situation and how they handle themselves.”

Try wearing something other than your stupid sunday orange outfit.

  • Cameron

Can’t really be compared to Mcilroy, on any scale, in any sense. Simply put, Mr Fowler is an overrated talent serving only to represent talent starved American golf.

  • Tony

Just because he wears a clown outfit, it’s no reason to way over rate this dude. The PGA Tour has a lot more to offer

  • Mills

I don’t see all this talent everyone keeps talking about. The most impressive thing I have seen him do was in the Accenture Match Play when he destroyed Phil but when it comes to the majors or world golf championships he is never any where to be seen. There is nothing overly impressive about his game, he just seems like a solid player who will get his fair share of top 10′s and maybe a few tour wins in his career.

  • Shawn

Maybe he hasn’t won yet, but at 22, how many times has he been in contention? Give the kid a break, he’s a great talent, a great kid and will end up winning a bunch of tournaments…just watch

  • Leon

Ricky is ok but I would like to know what Dr Drew knows that we don’t or arn’t supposed to know!

  • Louis

Why the Haters on his gear? He is still 22 and should only get better from here on out. Don’t understand the hate. Does the outfit offend you? It’s just clothing, He’s a pretty good player and if your judging a book by it;s cover then I guess that makes you perfect. How about a congrats to Watney for playing great the last two days, or is that to much to ask.

  • First Reviewer

In my opinion “Shawn” has the right handle on Mr.Fowler. Just think 6 years ago the fellow couldn’t get a Driver’s License, and more than likely still lives at home.

When did we all become so critical of the young? Wasn’t “Mr. Fowler” tied for the Top Spot on the Leader Board just Yesterday?

Everyone can tell that he is full of fun just by the way he dresses: however I will quickly add, although admittedly different, it’s his right to dress the way he likes.

Mr. Fowler is a Great Talent, and learning a little more with each outing. If he stays at it and doesn’t get discouraged in time he will be just fine.

At this point I don’t know what group to put “Mr. Fowler” in on the Tour: The Young, Younger, or Youngest?

The faces on the tour are changing, and sort of like the Old Saying, “ They are All Very Young, But They All Carry a Big Stick”.

  • bill mason

He’s a nice kid and a fantastic role model so let him make his own way in his own time. There is so much rubbish in this world that theRory’s, Bubba’s , etc of this world are a breath of fresh air and I aint no religious fanatic

  • John Hawk

I have never seen such inane comments! RF is an example of THE NEW BREED…cut him some slack, let him continue to learn the league he is playing in. When the golf commentators and cognicenti with their inflated egos would just knock it off about ‘when are you going to win’, then guys like RF will start really knocking it stiff. RMc settled it prety thoroughly and convincingly…

  • Jason

What a great talent and grounded kid rickie is . As a euro I cannot understand the negative comments from the US fans. He is only 22 and this is only his second year on tour. His clothing is aimed at the younger Market not the boring chinos and polo brigade and he will win a bunch of tournaments once he gets the first under his belt. It goes to show how hard it is to win on tour. Good luck to the kid.

  • Tony

I think what the haters are trying to say is: there are a lot of better young players (even amateurs) than Ricky. We are tired of the media and the PGA forcing him on us because he wears stupid outfits.

  • Steve

I’m still not certain why Rickie didn’t go for it in two at the 16th at TPC Scottsdale when he had a chance to win.

  • brian

Ricie is going to be a great player. He is learning each time he blows up in the final round. I hear the announcers say it is his swing I do not believe that cause his swing is what got him there. One time he laid up which hurt him the rest seemed to be bad luck. Golf is skill but luck has a big part. He will be there again and he will hopefully win cause he has the winning material to win. At 22 yesrs of age the kid has plenty of years left win. Some guys are still (A) or on the Nationwide tour, and or a mini-tour. Rickie keep it up.

  • Hao

if he wants to be competive at high level in this sport i suggest he gets a bit more serious and distance himself from those other 3 clowns [crane bubba mahan],let them do there own idiot show, he is only 22??? ,how old is jason day what has he done ?a hell off alot more then chooky. how about that coloured boy that won masters at 21 ,fell in by 12 shots i here ,people have short memories .if you think this guy’s your future savior ,you better wake up and smell the roses. have a good day

  • brian

Tony your so stupid for even making a comment like that cause of his outfit. Let me guess you are from NY. The kid is a good player plus he is expressing himself and marketing himself in todays market. get a grip. Why dont you worry and see what he accomplishes on the course instead say something about his clothing.

  • Chris

Easy people. None of you could shoot a 64 on this course; none of you!!!!!! The kid has the right attitude and it is only time before he learns how to win.

  • Boss

His swing and move are comparable to the freak’s in baseball…Its different but it works for him don’t change anything, they are jealous of the move,I wish I had it! It’s actually better rythum than Rory’s and his is exceptional.

  • scott

It seems like the golf media is always trying to force somebody on the public as the “next superstar”, and our American media is the worst about it. For a few years it was Anthony Kim, now it’s Ricky Fowler….both good players with cocky attitudes but nothing to indicate superstardom. Here’s an idea…how about waiting until a player has actually done something to warrant the hype?

  • Tim

Please at best he shows flashes of “greatness”. Let him consistently be on the leaderboard and I might pay attention

  • mensarian

Ricky is an outstanding golfer but he has a lot to learn on developing his career. He had to embarrassingly be told at the Masters to turn his hat around so the bill was in front during one of his interviews. He continues to do that (even in Saturday’s CBS interview after his round), maybe to promote his web site name on the cap, but it does not fit with golf’s image and he is losing followings by presenting himself that way. He can dress any way he wants but wearing his cap that way after being asked to correct the faux pas, indicates he thinks more about himself rather than the game. Ricky, you have tremendous potential but you need to avoid this bad boy, street thug cap image. Straighten up!

  • Ryan

give the kid a break.. he will get his win sooner or later..

  • Boss

It’s like some of these hot shot college baseball hiters, they get to the next level and they tighten up…Same philosiphy as golf the lighter you can hold the bat before you swing the better off you are,the best hitters can spray the ball all over the field. I prefer the wrist position of Rose the Dude Ashburn, with bat speed of Mantle!

  • Jonathan

Rickie is the most overrated player on TOUR. I’ve been saying this for a year. It’s a lot of style and flare but no substance. He’s not even close to Whatney, McIlroy, Kaymer, etc…

  • James

Who put all the vinegar in the water? Seriously, He’s 22! I love how the media builds up all these young players, knowing there is no way in he11 they will live up to the hype, so they can just tear them down. Rickie, congratulations, you’re their flavor of the month, you tasted good to them at first but gosh they couldn’t wait to spit you out.

  • paul kirwan

I had to agree with earlier comments about Fowler being a choker, however as i read down the comments i had to remind myself he is ONLY 22 and he does have plenty of time.how many times did Mclroy choke in winning situations before he suddenly came out on top!!im a betting man and i dont know how many times mclroy was in contention on a sunday and the bookies had him as favourite(and i labeled him a choker).well i was proved wrong with that awsome display in the us US Open…Fowler is colourful, yes he does need to apply himself but he has plenty of time ….

  • Hao

who proved you wrong about rory don’t put your/self down just yet,i believe tiger never played and he scares the hell out of him plus he wasn’t even challenged in the open.

  • Cameron

Listen: Rory Mcilroy is and always will be, in a different league to Rickie Fowler. They should never be compared.

  • richard iezzi

let the YOUNG GUY play golf
can any of his critics play as well ?
he is fun to watch and must have SOME GAME or he would not have been in the lead

  • Mills

Just referring to the comment, none of you could shoot 64 on this course. What an idiot, so you think when people comment about Rickie they are actually saying I am better than him, don’t be stupid.

  • Brad

I’m still pullin for ya Rickie!!! You WILL win and thank you for giving American golf fans at least SOMEONE to pull for….and FYI…you could come in 120th every week and my teenage daughters will still think you are Amazing!!!

  • K

Chokie Fowler or Rickie Choker? I can’t decide.

Fowler was rightly hyped up, brilliant amateur career, especially in the Walker Cup then he turned professional and immediately he nearly won some event at Scotsdale can’t remember what it’s called along with a succession of high finishes, which was not seen by such a young man in a long time.

If he had’ve won at Scotsdale in his first full year and not layed up on that par 5 16th unwisely, his career may not have stalled the way it has. But he is 22 and players’ peaks come at different times. He could go off the boil until he’s 25 then win 2 or 3 times in a year. He definitely has talent.

  • Grant

Rickie Fowler was the one bright spot (in more ways than one!) at the AT&T National. Tiger didn’t play. Phil didn’t play. Rory didn’t play. G-Mac didn’t play. Luke didn’t play. Lee didn’t play. Furyk didn’t contend. Without Rickie’s presence this past weekend, the AT&T National would have had extremely low TV ratings.

  • ray

Is a big shame to me listen inteligent people talk like that about some of more amazin young golf player of this era…really I can’t feel more than shame about all of you that can’t see the diamond behin of dust, cause this litter gay with just 22 years can do that they doing is really amazin, please just triing to imagin this young players like fowler, watson, vegas, rory, mahan, and other with 5 year more in the league. please just let a break for this young gays of the new era in PGA tour.
    thanks.

  • Doug

Interesting reading all these blogs from wannabe’s. Armchair quarterback’s. It’s the press that’s put him on a pedestal. He didn’t win rookie of the lyear last year because he plays poor golf. There are a lot of guys on tour who are journeyman that haven’t won a tournament yet. My only advise is that he should find himslef a seasoned caddy that can reign him in once in a while.

  • Jason

Hoe, if u think that rory is scared of tiger u r as crazy as your comments plus rory wasn’t challenged at the US open because he was so much better than everyone else fool.

  • Hao

    thanks

  • Anthony Distler

I think the reason everyone is so hard on Fowler is because he’s supposed to be the American McIlroy. Rory has been able to compete at the highest level, but we’re still waiting on Rickie to flourish, and we, as Americans, are impatient.

  • weston2010

Does everyone forget that Fowler has been a pro for only 2 years and MCllroy has ben a pro for 4 years even though they are the same ages. The years do make a big difference. Give Fowler some time. Also you have late bloomers and early bloomers in golf. Winning early does not necessarily translate into a great career.

  • kelprod

Cute kid and everything, but can we just stop already with the hype until this kid wins something (anything). To continue to call him a leader of the next generation is just silly at this point…

  • First Reviewer

Boy are we getting the Distance out of this Thread.

We got Mr. Fowler right were we want him and we are not going to let him up.

Good or Bad this Kid is a good one and Yes someday he will Win like all good Pros Do from time to time.

Weather he’s as good as the other YOUNG ONES at this time on the tour gives everyone here a little room to the Right and Left.

I ask my wife what she thought and she said, “He’s Cute as a Button, but his Hat seems a little Too Big for his Head”.

Now there’s something we all can vote on: Is his Hat Too Big, Just the Right Size, or should he only wear a Visor.

Two Votes here for Orange Visor.

  • gail

Who ever annointed Fowler as the next American hope? He had a solid, but not unbelievable amateur and college career and wasn’t even a shoo-in to get his tour card. Fundamentally, you can see the flaws, and that’s why the pressure seems to get the best of him. I’d stop looking at him as the hope of the younger Americans, as I b et even he doesn’t see himself in that light….

  • Jason

    My pleasure, lol.

  • Connor

Wow quit giving this guy a hard time. It was a rough day, they happen. He is still a great golfer. Top 5 at the Open Championship, T2 at the Bridgestone. His outfits are cool and I think you should give him a break. And joking around with Bubba Mahan and Crane is not a problem. He likes to have fun. He has an incredible attitude and is a great guy to look up to
