For those pros who are not yet in the field for next week’s World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, this week’s The Greenbrier Classic offers one more chance to earn a spot.
Those players inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking after The Greenbrier Classic will earn exemptions into Bridgestone if not otherwise qualified. That means players such as Ryan Palmer (No. 52) and Webb Simpson (No. 53) can still play their way into Firestone. Last year, Palmer finished second to Hunter Mahan at Bridgestone.
Also, the winner of The Greenbrier Classic also will earn a spot if not previously qualified. Stuart Appleby took that route last year, his win at Greenbrier providing him a spot in the Bridgestone field.
In addition, the winner will also earn a spot to the season’s final major, the PGA Championship, in two weeks.
Speaking of the PGA Championship, a player in this week’s Greenbrier field can also play his way into that major without winning. The Greenbrier Classic marks the cutoff for the top 70 money-winners to earn exemptions into the field at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Jimmy Walker (No. 72) and Carl Pettersson (No. 73) are among the players on the outside looking in who will hope to earn PGA Championship spots this week.
