Overnight leader Vaughn Taylor has just teed off in the Reno-Tahoe Open, but he finds himself four shots back of current leader Scott Piercy, who just set the course record in Round 3 with an 11-under 61.
Piercy made a six-foot putt for eagle on the 616-yard closing par-5 to best the previous course record of 62, which had been shot three times (Bill Glasson, 2005; Joe Ogilvie 2006; Parker McLachlin, 2008).
Piercy birdied Nos. 2 though 9 at Montreux, and after birdies at Nos. 14 and 15, the 59 watch was on for the third-year PGA TOUR player. His lone bogey came at No. 17, a 464-yard par-4, effectively ending the threat.
Other big movers in Round 3 include TOUR rookie Jim Renner, who shot a 7-under 65 and is currently in third place. James Driscoll also went low with a 66 to move to 7 under.

Making 8 birdies in a row has to be close to a PGA Tour record. Yet more impressive is following up a bogey on 17 with a closing eagle for a course record. That showed my the tenacity and depth of Piercy’s character to finish incredibly strong. great round and great fortitude.
that front nine is a thing of beauty
That only goes to show the quality of players we have on Tour.
Piercy had the 54 hole lead two weeks in a row in 2009 and couldn’t close the deal. Being from Las Vegas, I’m sure he’s feeling more comfortable being close to home. I hope he can close tomorrow. He’s needed a good week this year, and it’s in his grasp. Good luck Scott!
My memorable round was way back in ’80… I was 29. Shot 63 which included a 6 under back 9 and 5 birdies in a row. It was a thrill… Piercy’s 8 in a row is incredible, but I seem to recall a 9 under performance back in the 80′s at a club called Poincianna outside Orlando during a mini-tour event. I think his name was Dick Mast.
I believe 8 in a row is now the record. Seven has been done a few times..i knew it as soon as it posted on web.
mark calcavecchia had 9 birdies in a row at the canada open back at glen abbey in ’09
Is there no shot tracker for his event
one shy of the PGA record nine consecutive birdies Mark Calcavecchia had in the second round of the 2009 RBC Canadian Open
