David Toms
Paddy Harrington
*Rich Beem* – not sure why, but he jumped out at me while scrolling thru the tee times!
A: Glover, Marino
B: Toms, Simpson, Haas, Pettersson
C: Snedeker, Thurston Howell III
I finally got to post my picks earlier than Scot!
Snedeker and Glover if I had to bet on the championship, but Joe Bramlett or Michael Thompson if I wasnt. Both played well at the Travelers, and this is a similar event and course.
1. Olafur Loftsson
2. Davis Love III
3. David Toms
Snedeker edges out Web Simpson for his second win this season.
1. Kevin Chappell
2. Kyle Stanley
3. Cameron Tringale
Camilo Villegas
Ernie Els
This column is on it’s way back with consecutive placed efforts from Tringale and Toms. Subscriptions have doubled – back up to 2 – and a win is just around the corner. No Toms or Snedekers from me, no sir. This weeks value bets are
Cameron Tringale – I’ll continue to ride this wave whilst the bookies still offer value.
Garrett Willis – Top 15 in 2o of the 3 years the event has been at this venue. Top 25 last 2 tournaments.
Blake Adams – The course gives up lots of birdies. This man makes lots of birdies. Ergo…4 top 15′s last 8 events.
Bob Estes – a lot to like about his tied 2nd at Greenbrier. And Greenbrier sounds a bit like Greensboro.
Jim Renner – top 5 at both Reno and the Viking, both events lacking in big names. And there’s not a great number of big names here this week either.
Scott McCarron – no form to speak of, but course form of 12th, 1th and 2nd the past 3 years can’t be ignored.
Good luck and best wishes from England.
David Toms-when he gets in a groove he really plays well for several weeks-I’ll be surprised if he isn’t top five again.
JJ: I considered McCarron myself–but this doesn’t seem to be his year. Estes has been fairly solid (with some slips) and under most radars most of the season. Tringale is an obvious sleeper pick.
It’s nice to see someone besides myself put a little thought into their selections. (You may recall that I was touting Brandt Jobe last week–who looked like a magical pick until his Sunday fade.)
1. Webb Simpson
2. Anthony Kim
3. B.DeJonge
Snedeker all the way!!!
For me….
Two sure fired pro’s like:
Camilo Villegas & Ernie Els
And one hot shot rookie…
Bud Cauley
ANTHONY KIM
Wire to wire
Jerry Kelly!
Jerry Kelly
Did I mention Jerry Kelly?
Jim – yes, I noticed you picking Jobe last week and thought for 2 rounds that he was in with a big chance. I actually picked him for a couple of tournamnents earlier this year and got a return when he was second at Memorial. He played great that tournament and there was some great golf in the final round when he was alongside Kuch (I think).
As for this week, I agree that Scotty isn’t exactly in stellar form, but you never know!!!
As for giving it some thought, thank you. No fun in just naming the same as everyone else is there? May as well go for players who are not only sleepers, they almost need CPR!!
Ronald Mcdonald
JJ: In my case, I have essentially been FORCED to d extra research for the past few weeks. I’ve only got three Stricker starts left and have had to sit him down for the last month in order to save him for the next three weeks.
All that aside, it’s hard not to like Toms and Sneds this week. Particularly Sneds. I am surprised I’m not seeing more support for Pettersson, though. Solid if unspectacular season, great putting and birdie stats and a former winner.
I like De Jonge this week. He lives in Charlotte and played well at Quail hollow, so he obviously knows the area. Also coming of a good week last week at the PGA.
Haas and Simpson are also very good picks.
Sam: I’ve used DeJonge several times this year, and with generally good results. But I just don’t feel it this week. He’s played twice in Greensboro and missed both cuts. Despite his terrific season, I feel Botton made a mistake including him in the Power Rankings this week, while relegating Pettersson to the “Danger” group.
Jim
Yes, I saw thst you’re saving Stricks, good idea. I think I’ll play along in Fantasy next year. Signed up for this year but then had major internet problems.
As for your picks, I can’t rule any of them out. Totally agree about Big Carl, anyone who can shoot a 61 around a course needs consideration.
I’m usually wary about picking players who have just performed well in a Major but Toms has been around the block enough times to cope.
Driscoll ,Toms ,Kirk
David Toms
Paul Casey
Ian Poulter
K.T.Kim
Frankly, I’m surprised to see Toms playing this week at all. He doesn’t need the FedEx points. To me that says that he really likes the course and feels it won’t wear him out too much before the playoffs start. Confidence like that from a seasoned vet like Toms is hard to ignore.
I find it difficult to understand why anyone would pick De Jonge. When has he ever held it together for four rounds? If in contention after 3 rounds you can bet he’ll bottle it in the 4th. This years top 5′s
Transitions – started the day in second place. 4 dropped shots in the last 7 holes.
John Deere – started the day in second place. 2 double bogeys in first 5 holes.
and
Greenbrier – got in contention on the front 9 then played the back 9 only -1. With a 5 1/2 feet miss on the 18th that would have got him in the playoff.
Webb Simpson all the way !!!!!!! It is his time
Webb Simpson. He has so many good finishes this year, he is from north carolina and is playing well enough to win
Michael Bradley
Anthony Kim, AK
Camilo
Brandt Snedeker, Ryuji Imada.
Jim: I also feel that Pettersson should have been up there as well. Concerning De Jonge, I just think he’s playing too well not to have a good week sometime soon. I’ll consider throwing in a steady veteran like Toms or Love III also. Thanks for the advice. :)
Sam: Don’t pick the wrong Trey this week. Charles Howell has a much better shot than Davis Love at the Wyndham. Not that Love doesn’t have a chance.
B Haas
L Glover
A Atwal
D Toms
It’s time for the unknowns – Nyasha Mauchaza, Savio Nazareth & Jerry Richardson!!!
Gotta go with bro Jerod Turner!!! Good Luck…
I declare that my fellow Texans, Leonard, Campbell & Estes, are in the running!!!
Gov. Perry has declared his picks. Now, it’s my turn. How about the boys from the Golden State – McCarron, Merrick, Mallinger & Tringale.
Party lines forgotten, the chair agrees with the ex California governor.
Couple of tips from Downunder
Marc Leishman
Aron Price
Matt Jones.
They need the money … but that weak $usd ??
I took a long, hard look at Leishman. My final analysis is that his putting stats are going to bury him this week. Remember that he managed only a T18 last year and a T17 the year before–both years when his overall performance was much better than his 2011 season.
Besides having had some bad-luck health issues, I think Retief has a real good chance to win. Watch this space.
Ian Poulter, time of year he starts to show form.
I still think John Daly is going to pull out a win this year and this tourny is as good a chance as any!! John Daly!!!!
SAM DE JONG LAKS TICKER -BUT GOOD LUCK.
Brandt Snedeker
Well, I don´t give up my hopes for Camilo, he is a good player, something got to his head, hope it´s not the money & fame, that won´t be easy to get rid of!, I´m sure it´s just a face.
CAMILO VILLEGAS,TELL ME THIS IS NOT [TIGER BASHING SCOTT], where does this selection come from? you keep saying tigers out of form and come up villegis. if he wins there will be a major inquiry probably a dope test as well,on you and him.
not I´m not tiger bashing whatever, probably you need your head tested Hao, being the way you are not even in chatrooms like this you´ll survive. get serious.
Blake adams my pick he is a birdie machine course will suit
I’ve got a good feeling about Lucas Glover this week, wouldn’t be surprised to see him come out on top.
Heath Slocum quite this season might turn it around this week ahead of Hass,Furyk and Toms.
Poulter going to put a good weekend shift in for the first time in months.
Toms to win though.
Sleeper……Billy McGirt
Kyle Stanley
hao – so who are you picking….since your bum chum isn’t around
Steve Flesch…hands down….
Winner: Charles Howell III
Others: Vaughn Taylor, Marc Turnesa, Scott McCarron, Matt McQuillan, Ben Martin
SCOTT/, when i pick i put the money on, at this point iam on ian poulter, anthony kim ,lucass glover, into the ladies- into the seniors -into the european czech open . small outlay for big return. no big money just yet too difficult.
scott -iam WAITING-MODERATION, so short answer this time . no big money- poulter, glover, kim with no confidence .
Matt Jones will win his first PGA event.
**********************
Watney and Bubba will
D O M I N A T E
this week. . . .
**********************
1 TROY MATTESON THIS IS HIS WEEK 2 CAMERON TRINGALE WILL BE IN THE TOP 5
For the couple of people who mentioned Blake Adams: an interesting pick. He IS, in fact, a birdie machine, ranking 44th overall in birdie %-age and #3 in overall birdies. More importantly for a Par 70 course, he is 29th in Par 4 birdie %-age. (He is much worse on par 3s and 5s.)
Adams is also a great putter–36th in strokes-gained-putting and 34th in total putting.
These stats make him a perfect fit for Sedgefield–on paper. However, he finished T65 here last year in his only appearance. And look at his last two months. Yes, it has been the best two months of his young career. But in every one of those tournaments down that stretch, Adams shot par or higher in one or more rounds. The lone exception was the Travelers. where he broke par every round to shoot -14 and still only finished in 9th place.
Adams can go low (scoring avg. 35th), but he starts slow (scoring avg. before the cut 56th). At Sedgefield, starting slow can leave you an insurmountable mountain to climb.
All that being said, Adams is an interesting sleeper pick and one to consider if you aren’t feeling the love for Pettersson or DeJonge or you need to rest Haas or Toms.
Stricker, Steve
Two Gloves.
Barbara: Stricker isn’t entered this week.
Tigerishistory: Neither are Watney or Watson.
As much as I like David Toms, I think he was gearing up for the PGA and will have a let down here. The volitale Pat Perez has played well lately and should be a factor if he can control his emotions. I also like de jonge who has played well.
However, I am going with the bounce back player of the week – Jason Dufner. And my dark horse is Jim Furyk.
Hank: You realize that Furyk has never played at Sedgefield, right? I mean, I was as happy to see him do well last week as anybody. But he had actually PLAYED AAC before in 2001, where he finished 7th. Sedgefield is terra incognita for him.
Padraig Harrington
Hey, Bacardi, my rum is better than yours. lol! Anyway, I’m just happy now that Tigger is toast.
Bradley is the name and he wins the battle. Michael Bradley, that is.
1. Arjun Atwal
Time to put 4 good ronds together.
I like the Canadian David Hearn. Also like “Fear the Beard” Glover.
Two Gloves can string birdies like crazy on the right course… and this is the right course. Also Bubba should have fun shreading this one….
My bad…. Bubba isn’t entered… too bad, But Tommy is still the man!!
__________________________________________
This week will be the Johnson Wagner Show!
Book It!
D.J. Trahan and the Surge Swing!
My pick is…Jason Dufner (hope he knows how to play the last 4 holes on Sunday).
Do not fear Double D will be on top!
HAO, stop making stupid comments, you idiot. Just keep on washing Tiger’s balls and, meanwhile, make me some eggrolls.
Hey bacardi, if I give you my yahoo password will you make my picks for me this week. You seem to be making everyone elses
Bacardi Jim – With pros like Furyk, I don’t think the first time at a course is a major issue. He had not played well this year untl recently and I think he has his groove back. We shall see.
Makers Mark Hank “D”
justin ‘time’ leonard
Steve Flesch …he’ll be your winner!!!!
However here are a few guys that I think will be in the running!
Davis Love III
Tommy Gainey
Jason Dufner
Kyle Stanley
My picks:
1-Crane
2-Dufner
3-Toms
4-Gainey
jason bohn
tiger to win a tv commentators job
Seriously after last weeks shock results and I mean all top 5 players how can we be expected to pick a winner. To many inconsistent players. But what the heck I will tip
C Howell, petterson or k Stanley
Rod Curl
Dick Mast
Billy Haas, after the Greenbrier he sounded/looked disappointed and this might be the right venue for a little uplifting before the playoffs.
this is way out there but
matt mcquiilon
steve bowditch
kyle stanley
my first pick is a dark horse who could win soon at big odds watch out for him he hits it quite long aswell good luck everyone who has a flutter
camilo villegas
To Scott.
You are the “big mouth” that had
a pot shot at my selections in
PGA. Just a reminder, (2) out
of the (3) finished TOP (5).
So go suck on them apples.
Glen Day
If you guys could see how far this guy hits the ball in person you would be amazed. Glen Day is a freak of nature. A country mile does not do the distance he hits the ball and justice.
Jason Bohn was my original “under the radar” pick. Then I did some deeper research and rejected him. He does have a pair of 2nd place finishes at the tourney, 2009 and 2006. But the 2006 Wyndham was on a different course. And he was playing much better in 2009 than he is this year. He finished 2009 missing only seven cuts in twenty-five tournaments, with $1.1 million in winnings and ranked #68 in FedEx Cup points. This year he has also missed the cut seven times, but in only eighteen tournaments, has won only $265,000 and is FedEx #153.
More important is Bohn’s decline in several key stats. He is #127 in strokes-gained-putting, #76 in birdie average, and #123 in scoring average.
These reasons eventually led me to dismiss Bohn in favor of Carl Pettersson.
Anderson McWhatever: Yes, buttt…. length isn’t needed at Sedgefield. It’s not a particularly long course, and most everybody who is in contention makes a ton of birdies. Putting is more important there than distance–MUCH more important.
Day is ranked near the bottom of the entire PGA in putting stats, birdie stats and scoring stats. In fact, his best round of the year so far is a 72. This on a course where the winner is usually somewhere around -20.
Think about it.
@ Bacardi Jim
Glen Day is one of the nicest guys on tour which should be enough to get him into the winners circle. He will win this week if he Monday qualified. He is the peoples champion and can still hit the ball a country mile.
George McNeill
Having a good year on limited status. Will win soon!
If being nice was what won golf tournaments, they sure would be boring to watch. I mean, would giving away a ball earn a player two strokes off his score? Would cursing a photographer bring a penalty?
Sadly, golf is a competitive sport. Skill and talent put one in the winner’s circle–not personality and niceness. And if you don’t think that’s fair–if you truly believe that niceness should be all it takes to win, then perhaps you should be watching beauty pageants or Big Brother instead of sports.
I’m just sayin’.
All people in favor of Glen Day winning the Wyndham say “I”
I
i like the sound of jj’s picks and was tempted to go along with some of them but i am sticking my neck out for de jonge. sure enough he is a good runner for leader after round one but can he hold it together for all four? surely he has to do it one of these days.
be great if harrington did the business and got some silverware for the cabinate back here in good old ireland. could it be harry’s game?
Heath Slocum from Hass,Furyk and Toms.
Dufner and Toms in playoff – Toms wins playoff
Brandt Snedeker is my pick for top 3 with the tour rookies the way they are playing anybody could take this. I do believe it will be a 30 and under.
Phil
I also like campbell to be a force this weekend, he is due.
David Duval?????????????????????
1. David Toms
2. Webb Simpson
3. Brandt Snedeker
4. Bill Haas
5. Lucas Glover
Kyle Stanley
Surprised more people aren’t on the Webb train. He’s been on a lot of leaderboards this summer, played at Wake, lives in Charlotte, makes a lot of birdies. Makes sense to me. He’s got to get the first one somewhere.
i never really thought of glen day as that long of a hitter, am i wrong?
bagger vance , you dont have to have a long neck to be a goose / your living proof
Josh Teater gonna bust thru – he has been in position a couple times this year and is ready to win. Top 20 in Greensboro last year.
Chris’s Kirk & Couch great odds and great chances……dont get sucked into Toms & Sned
Joe Durant
Ryuji, Chucky Howell, Dean Wilson
Ok who said I was a cheap tipper?
Who needs a good finish to secure top 125?
Who is not a young gun?
Who will be the low Blue Devil this week?
Who will some day be the Commissioner of the PGA Tour?
The only correct answer to all of the above:
Joe Ogilvie
Slocum to win from Hass,Furyk and Toms.
Camilo Villegas, por supuesto.
Duke Sucketh
Signed,
UNC Alum
First time picking on the site so here goes…
Anthony Kim.
I think he’ll be determined to make amends for a Sunday flop at the Greenbrier. Until the last 10-11 holes of that tournament he was peerless.
David Toms.
It’s a putter’s course and he’s been holing them from all angles and distances, adding in some brilliant sandys.
Webb Simpson.
If his bottle and his temperament can hold out on a Sunday then he could break his duck here.
I just don’t understand how anyone could tip Els, Goosen or Daly. It’s just not going to happen.
jim carrey
Heath Slocum to win with Top 10 chances to Hass,Furyk and Toms.
S. Bowditch. For no other reason than he is incredibly talented and long overdue.
Top 10
D.Toms/B.Haas/Webb/L.Glover/T.Gillis/J.Furyk
G.Willis/K.Stadler/K.Stanley/T.Immelman
*Note (not neccessarily in that order) :>)
Slocum
1. Webb Simpson
2.Bill Hass
3. David toms
Hmmmm… Marino and Pettersson making the most of their early tee times. A shame I have them both on my bench this round. Looks like I’ll be putting them in for the weekend, however.
Gosh, I’m good at this. ;)
nobody mentioned tiger or phil ? what gives … oh not playing . my picks are marino because he is a va boy like me. plus i played jr golf with his caddie back in the day .funny guy . second pick will go with jason dufner. the kid will redeem himself from last week. sleeper pick will be bill haas !
Paul Casey
Jimmy Walker
Hunter Haas
good man weekenz. followed your advice and put 50 euro on two gloves e/w at 100/1. and the crazy man gets 6 under on the front nine. if he keeps it together he will probably finish -24. padraig or 2 gloves to win as im from ireland
