EDISON, N.J. – An earthquake that struck northern Virginia was felt by players and others on Tuesday at Plainfield Country Club, site of The Barclays.
According to CNN, the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale.
Tremors were felt in the New York/New Jersey area, as well in Washington, D.C., as well as in North Carolina. All U.S. Capitol buildings were evacuated but there were no reports of injuries or damage, according to CNN.
Defending FedExCup champion Jim Furyk was in the interview tent answering a question about using a long putter when the floor began to shake, causing him to pause until the tremors subsided.
Other players quickly reacted via their Twitter feeds:

Fred “Boom-Boom” Couples just arrived to pick his President’s Cup Team.
I had the thought that the “playoffs” would seem more like playoffs if the players were split into two groups of say 64 a piece, with one group (made up of Nos 1,4,5,8,9 etc) playing the first week and the other the second week, with the top 32 in each group moving on to the third week, and the top 32 from the third week moving on to the Tour Championship. With such a format, the players would get a week off during the playoff, which they probably all need after the grueling schedule leading up to the playoffs, and there would be no need for a cut in any of the tournaments.
I would think the first two tournaments would be just as interesting and perhaps more so even with only half the eligible players since every player would have a chance right through Sunday.
Looks like Irene might just spoil the fun at the Barclays this weekend, break out the rain gear boys!!!
When the ground in the press conference tent shook, ecverybody thought it was Phil who walked in to the tent. But then they realized it was an earthquake.
I love golf rules. If it happens during the tournament everybody who’s addressing the ball gets a penalty stroke, right?
Thanks for providing the “Laughter Shocks” y’all….
