Round 2: The Barclays

Nine burning questions answered

EDISON, N.J. — Hurricane Irene admittedly has conjured up lots of questions as she rumbles up the East Coast.

Not to worry, though. PGATOUR.COM has the answers – at least about The Barclays and the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.

1. When will the third — and final round — of The Barclays be broadcast on TV? The airtimes on the Golf Channel (1-2:30 p.m. ET) and CBS (3-6 p.m.) will remain the same. On Sunday, CBS will show the final round of the 2010 Barclays, as well as some taped coverage from Saturday’s final round.

2. What happens to the Live@ coverage on PGATOUR.COM? Well, it will be tape delayed on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET and running through 5:30-6 p.m. There will be no Live@ on Sunday.

3. Can I still listen to the PGA TOUR Live coverage on Sirius/XM? Absolutely. That coverage will air from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. There will  be no coverage on Sunday.

4. Is there any possibility that The Barclays would be extended to next week in order to complete 54 holes? Definitely not. The tournament will conclude one way or another on Saturday.

If the entire field can complete the full 54 holes, the man who leads at the end will be the champion. If play is curtailed by weather, the tournament reverts to the 36-hole leaderboard and the FedExCup points will be distributed accordingly.

Either way Matt Kuchar has a great chance of successfully defending his title at The Barclays. He currently owns a one-stroke lead over Dustin Johnson and Vijay Singh.

5. Would the win be an official win? If 54 holes are completed, yes. If  the tournament has to revert to 36 holes, the win would be unofficial but the FedExCup and money earned would be official.

6. What is the forecast for Saturday? Well, it isn’t good. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in the morning and steady rain with more electricity in the afternoon. Players will be sent off Nos. 1 and 10 in threesomes from 7-9 a.m. on Saturday in hopes of completing play before the worst of the weather arrives around 2 p.m.

7. What if two players are tied at the end of 54 holes? Weather-permitting, there will be a playoff.

8. What about the ticket situation? All four competition days at The Barclays were sold out. So Saturday’s tickets will be honored for the final round. Anyone holding a ticket for Sunday will receive good-any-day passes to the 2012 Barclays, which will be held on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park.

9. When was the last 54-hole tournament on the PGA TOUR? That would be the 2009 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Interestingly, that event was won by Dustin Johnson, who starts the final round of The Barclays one stroke off the lead held by Matt Kuchar. This will be the 26th 54-hole event on the PGA TOUR since 1990.

I’am a international fan of golf (I’m living in Italy). The international feed for foreign broadcaster when will be trasmitted? It will be a live coverage or a tape delay at the same time of CBS coverage?

  • Rich

I wonder what happens if there is a tie after 36 holes, and tomorrow is cancelled? Are there co-winners?

  • D.A.C.

Rich, the second round is completed and Kuchar leads by 1 so if the 3rd round is cancelled Kuchar will be declared the winner.

  • Chad

It will be unofficial if they don’t complete 54 holes so all wagers will be canceled…..correct?

  • Phil

I don’t understand why LIVE @ is not shown “Live”. I’m sure this will cut down on many viewers including myself.

  • Mark

How come Saturday ticket holders are not accommodated with next year’s tickets with the same consideration as Sunday ticket holders. The accelerated and early start times combined with early finish ending time does not, in my opinion, provide for a positive Barclays Tournament experience. Saturday ticket holders that do not go should be allowed the same consideration as Sunday ticket holders.

I have Sat. ticket. But New Jersey area is evacuating for Irene. We can’t make it to the match on Sat. because we are on the way out of there. any policy for the Sat. ticket? It’s unfair to do nothing to the people with Sat. ticket. We can’t make it because the safety reason!!

  • Pete H

I have Sunday tickets. How do you get the 2012 tickets? This should be the tenth burning question.

  • rick

how do you redeem the good any day pass for next year if you have tickets to Sunday? Think you have to bring them tomorrow or just hold onto them? thx

  • mahmoud

@Chad, I had to look up the rules because I have a bet on Johnson…..I believe after 36 holes the bet stands no matter what…..so you better hope your guy comes back and wins it because that’s the only way you’ll be entitled to getting your money back (and some winnings).

I think the PGA blew this one badly. Although I agree that safety should come first and understand why the event has been shortened. They should have said on Thursday that it would be a 54 hole event. Players that actually want to WIN would have played it differently. Kuchar is very lucky and owns a tremendous advantage at the moment. I really hope tomorrow is okay (and the forecast says it should be) because I think that Johnson can pull this off! If only he had made one of those putts on the last 3 holes (all were for birdies from inside 10 feet I think) he would be in the driver seat right now! Enjoy the golf tomorrow peops!

  • tobias smit

just wondering are they cutting the price money by 25% seeing that the fans are getting the short end of the driver??

  • lbirdie123

They should NOT be playing today. They will not finish the round and rain and wind will be getting there by noon. Then all the people associated with this event will have to SCRAMBLE to get to safety. PGA Tour was WRONG on playing today. Shame on you for putting $$$ above safety of all involved with this tourney.

Who is the genius who decided “live” coverage will start at 12:30 when the tournament is over? At least Sirius gets it. How about CBS also…here it is the Fedex Cup playoffs…thrown in our face all year about how important it is. Now it is the FINAL round of the first event with a great leaderboard and it will be tape delayed! Tim Finchem is working on a new contract in this new less Tiger world and they can’t figure this out? Why can’t Golf Channel pick up the coverage? I guarantee I won’t be watching TV today. I will be listening to Sirius and following the leaderboard on pgatour.com.

  • Kent

I agree with those who decry the tape delayed coverages. The Golf Channel would probably be able to adjust their programming if CBS wouldn’t. I won’t be watching on TV because I will already know who the winner is by following on PGAtour.com.

  • Corsair

How will this change TV schedules? Changes have not been publicized.

  • Jon Bowditch

I purchased a weekly package of tickets to the 2011 Barclay’s tournament at the 2010 tournament. Since the Sunday day of the 2011 tournament was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene, I understand that I will be eligible for an “any day” ticket for the 2012 tournament. Can you please let me know how I can obtain this ticket to the 2012 tournament? Thank you

  • Anne Chomko

I have 2 Sunday tickets for the 2011 Barclays, please advise on the procedure for receiving 2 any day tickets for the 2012 event at Bethpage. Thank you!
