Tiger Woods will tee it up with defending champion Rocco Mediate at CordeValle in October.

Tiger Woods said on his website Monday that he had committed to the Frys.com Open, the second tournament of the 2011 PGA TOUR Fall Series. The event will be held Oct. 6-9.

“I always enjoy competing in my home state, and this tournament fits my schedule perfectly,” Woods said. “I’m looking forward to seeing some old friends. John Fry and his company have supported the TOUR, and I’ve heard good things about the event and the golf course.”

“One of my goals this year was to participate in a tournament I hadn’t played before, and now, I will.”

The defending champion of the event is Rocco Mediate, who lost an epic playoff to Woods at the 2008 U.S. Open.

“Any time Rocco is in the field, it’s always fun,” Woods said.

News of Woods’ entry into the Frys.com Open comes on the heels his inclusion on the 2011 Presidents Cup team. Couples put any speculation to rest by revealing that Woods would be a Captain’s Pick for the matches, which begin Nov. 14 at Royal Melbourne.

Woods is seeking his first win on TOUR since the 2009 BMW Championship. He has just two top-10s in eight starts in 2011 after missing three months with a leg injury.

Good for Tiger. It’s a small step, yet it is a step in the right directin.

TIGER WOODS = GREATEST GOLFER OF ALL TIME

  • Mr. Ebony

When Mr. Tiger plays the ATT Pebble Beach Pro-Am then I will believe he likes playing in his home state!

  • Ryan R.

dude needs to start playing more if he wants to regain his old form and start winning again

  • Harry

The only step i would like him to take is in a pothole..greatest of all time? Give me a break

  • Jordan Blake

    Boring.

  • Kris D

If he wants to get back in the good graces of the fans he should do 2 things:

    1. Play some lesser tournaments so more people can see him play.

    2. Win

  • Jeff

Oh Harry, to be as bitter as you one day…

  • Peter B

    Who’s Tiger

  • MZStitch

And we care because? Tiger who?

  • Bill Adkins

Tiger has ruined his legacy and image off of the golf course. It will be interesting to see what happens the next 15 years on the golf course………. :)

  • Johnnyz.

How times have changed for the “self proclamied” greatest golfer of all times. TIGER has to lower himself to play in the FRY.com Open. To Quote TIGER, “One of my goals this year was to participate in a tournamnet I hadn’t played before, and now, I will. I am sure if TIGER had won a major or made the FedEx Cup playoffs the FRY.com Open would have been the farthest thing from TIGER’S mind. Perhaps one day we might see TIGER smile and sign a few more authograph’s when he misses another cut or two on the PGA tour. A great golfer he is, not sure if I would agree that he is the greatest golfer of all time even if he were to surpass all of the records that Jack holds.

  • Christian

Why not play at Disney two weeks later as well? It’s an event he not only played but won twice (’96 and ’99) at the beginning of his career. He needs to start playing a bit more often if he wants to get his game together and finally get back into the winner’s circle…

  • Al P

Excellent Choice. 15 Under won last year so the course is not easy. He could have picked an easier course, but the better players prefer the tough courses to eliminate the lucky round. Again good choice. Hope he wins wire to wire.

  • Ronnie Mac

    I agree with Kris D

  • Rowan

Go Tiger! You need to win tournaments. It’s been a long drought.

  • Don2

I’m just glad he’s playing. Who cares where. It’s his business anyway. Why do so many think he should do what they want? Get a life people. By the way, all millionaires do things that us mortals can’t do, so get over it.

  • #1Tiger Fan

wonderful news this…good luck to tiger and hope it will be a victory….cant wait to watch

AND REMEMBER TIGER – JUST DO IT -

  • Jordan Blake

Look, it is simple, if he doesn’t play many rounds (as he calls it) then he will still have that as an excuse…”I need more reps, I’m flushing it, like the way I feel, just need more reps”.

Bottom line…less he plays, he will have an excuse…it’s over for this guy, never will play like the past. Nobody plays like they did from 18-35…his best is behind him…move on Tiger or you will be a joke like Brett Favre…LOL!

  • Tiger Hater

FRAUD,FRAUD,FRAUD,FRAUD,FRAUD,FRAUD,FRAUD,FRAUD,FRAUD,FRAUD,FRAUD,oh and did i mention, FRAUD!!!

  • Jesse Adams

Great News..Played that track at Cordevalle last week…It should be fun to see them play and TIGER give them a run !

  • Ida Rickards

Why are some of you so nasty?
Tiger is a free man. He can play when he wants and wherever he chooses.
If you do not care to watch, then don’t.

    Tiger, just play golf.

  • howard

Now that you have no pain, you need to play more. Use your stinger or whatever it takes to hit the fairway. I feel its mind over manner Tiger. You had your mind on the game but since what took place for the past 2 years you seem to stop thinking golf. My buddy and I wish to see you back on track and play and win. Good luck in the games to come.

  • bill

I see some think Tiger smeared them or their family. He didnt mine but he payed dearly. I guess the only Christian thing to do is nailing him to a tree somewhere right?
Tiger is a great American who has stumbled.
Should he hide under the house? He is sharing the raising of his children with Elin.
Dont you think if he is as bad as some of you say she would never trust her children with him?

  • Chuck Schick

Well said Bill. Some on this topic seem to find it hard to forgive, even a year and a half later AND after a public apology from the man.

  • Sonny

Rarely has a person been in the position to do his sport more good than has Tiger Woods. He has failed miserably on all levels, but particularly on the most important level of all and that is as a powerful role model. The only thing left for him to do that could be construed as “for the good of the game”, would for him to keep his perpetually obscene mouth shut and quietly disappear as is appropriate for someone who has disgraced himself, his fellow players and the innocents who have revered and emulated him.
Never has someone who could have done so much good, done so much damage.

  • Pepper

He will fall flat on his face. Freddy was stupid to pick him. RATINGS ?????????

  • jeff

He matters to all of you because you took the time to comment. Don’t like the guy then don’t get on here and comment. Like or hate him he still has everybody’s attention. Yes even the haters

  • Al from Australia

To tigahlova.I just want to make it
perfectly clear to you. Tiger Woods
is the 2nd greatest golfer of all time.
Tiger stated recently that the remainder
of this year will be focused on Australia
    then “full on”in 2012. Obviously a
change of plans.I hope he perfoms well
at the Frys.com Open.I personally dont
believe that will be the case as his
game requires rapid improvement in all
    areas, however you never know.

  • Mike Fleissner

I’m glad to see him play and I’m sure the sponsors are too. Nicklaus did’t win his 15th major until he was 38, so Woods has 2 more years to keep up. Some great champions never won majors after age 35, (Palmer, Watson), but others did (Hogan, Nicklaus, Player, Trevino).
I will pulling for Woods and I think it is a great sports story.
I could not care less what the anonymous haters and moralists say. They’re pathetic.

  • tiger is a cub

Tiger is an example of how millionaire african americans may screw up their life…just like kobe bryant except kobe plays the game and leaves his personal life out of it. If the ratings on tv didn’t plummet when he doesn’t play, I would suggest to take a year off. Wanna see you win again cub woods

  • dayhold

    WTG Tiger. Biggest pile ever.

  • jesse james

A lot of you are very angry at the Tiger. Why ?

Personally I don’t believe any of the claims from that group of money hungry women, least of all Elin. Remember guys that nothing was ever proven in relation to Tiger and all those women. Not one piece of video footage or photo has ever come forward. Some of these women were porn stars don’t forget… not exactly the most believable women in the world.

Give Tiger a break he has sufferred enough.

  • Tina

This is for A hole tiger is a cub……..You are a RACIST IDIOT! Yes I said it. NOW WHAT?

  • Tina

Thank You Jesse James…….I am sure one of those upstanding women would have come up with a picture or tell all book by now………

  • Jerry

I’m with Tiger Hater. I never liked him. He always seemed above it all and too obnoxious. The game doesn’t need him. His game may never see a fist pump again.

  • tiger is a cub

Its not racist its merely a proven fact

  • bill mason

Best news ever.Stevie is known to me and whilst he has the best interests of Adam at heart now,a man who has the best swing in the world, I am sure as a kiwi he is not vindictive and also has Tiger’s best interests at heart.I gave Tiger a lesson through Steve about swinging within a barrell and they acknowledged at that time that they were working on that principle and it was helpful.Tiger I am pleased you are in the US Team

  • Redgolfer

    Tiger just be yourself .

  • fuzzy 2

Jesse James…..I don’t know how to tell you this , but there is NO Santa Claus .

  • andrew

hey fraud and tiger hater, you guys know nothing about golf, go and follow another sport. To be no 1 in the world for so long takes plenty of talent. You don’t lose that overnight either, He’ll be back and you’ll be hiding somewhere when he does LOL.

  • golfdog

Good news Tiger but one extra event to your schedule isn’t going to make much difference. Tiger should be playing 2 to 3 tournys a month if he has a chance to regain days of old. I’d like to see him play the Honda Classic in his new home state and about 15 miles from his home in Jupiter Island. It’s a tough track that usually only a dozen or so golfer can finish under par.

  • tiger is a cub

Tiger did not lose his talent. He lost two more important factors in golf:
    1. He has no mental game.
    2. He has lost the intimidation factor.

Without those two, tigger cub isn’t feared byy the 20 somethings, and they’re owning him

  • ANGELINA

i have never been so proud to be an aussie, i feel so sorry for all you american lady’s being married to these little wimps. it’s about time you gals spoke up and told them you don’t want a little puppy dog in your lives ,that you prefer a real tiger someone that curses, gets angry, slams the odd club into the ground, gives you the odd stare, iam not sure about you lady’s but it does it for me. i think deep down your men are feeling a little inadequate since tiger was rated so highly by these other women. you know an ex of mine once told me .why go out on a cold winters morning and play 9 holes when you can stay at home and play the same hole 9 different ways.hope all you girls can come to australia some time and experiance the real world.bye.

  • Jeff

Great choice. He should be a great attraction and addition to the field. If he does not make the cut he can always come watch the Stanford Colorado football game at Stanford Stadium!

  • PETER

BIG AL FROM OZ,are you the lucky husband of angelina.although she talks more sense then you.

  • Scott

Good for Tiger. How soon we forget why we are all fascinated by Tiger Woods, his ability on the golf course. For the PGA to change the makeup of golf courses because of one man is really amazing. I admire Tiger for his ability and what he has done for the game of golf. he has changed it! Just like the great golfers of the past. What he does off the course is not my concern.

  • Skott

… except if i’ts with me wife!

  • CHUCKYP

jesse james, so a woman with text messages on her phone, records from his credit cards and HIM admitting that he “STRAYED” was still not proof enough that he had affairs. It doesn’t matter that they were money hungry, he was more than willing to pay and pay he did. He probably paid more for his “good times” than you will make in your life time. But he is innocent until you see a 2 hour video with director and producer credits. Jesse, Tiger has some oceanfront property in Arizona he can give you a good deal on.

  • CHUCKYP

As for his golf. He has lost his edge, mentally and physically. Most players in their mid 30′s don’t start tinkering with their swing, especially when you have had 2 that worked already. He has lost all confidence in his putting. He has even started to try a different putter, that is truly an indication of lack of confidence. He may win again, but he will NOT dominate like he did in the past. Don’t think he will get to Jack’s major record. It will take a whole lot of improvement to get there.

  • the man

It’s unfortunate that nowadays grown men whine like babies over the dumbest subjects. Who gives a hoot about a golfers’ return to the game when we have mother nature taking the planet apart day by day. If everyone just accepted every day events then I might be talked into baking some good old apple pies and serve a slice with my world famous ice tea. I pray for you all to come to your senses before God takes us all home.
    AMEN

  • Marshall

Go TIGER! You’re the man, man.

  • Carl Bennett

Interesting that the injury card seems to have played itself out, but it will be great to see Tiger lose more of his stripes again under all that PGA bootlicking.

Also, with any luck, Rocco “miss the cut” Mediate will stick around long enough to defend his title and watch it happen with us.

  • duckits

Can’t we All just Get Along?
America loves to be Divided. Tiger announces he is going to play a Golf Tournament in Oct and immediately everyone’s panties are in a bunch.
    Get real people. It’s just a Game…

  • ron

Any other input from the tea party?
Harry karma is powerfull on all sides

  • brian

When Tiger did what he did I wanted to punch him in the face and sometimes I still do for various reasons. That being said, it’s never a bad thing to see him play more. I was getting tired of the cameo appearances the last couple of seasons. He is my favorite golfer to watch but he has faults like every other human. I think it’s healthy for him to eat some humble pie no matter what the reason. I would love to see him play every week in the U.S. if he could but it isn’t possible. I hope all the people ripping him realize that golf for all of us is way better because of him. You wouldn’t have the equipment, clothing and golf courses you have today if it weren’t for him.

  • the man

I’m with you duckits….just imagine the ranting and raving when T.W. picks his caddy….oh lord, save us all…this chat shack will be rocking hard that day…

    that is all…..

  • Ian

Sonny… that is the ridiculous. Look up the stats if you want to see what Tiger has done for the game. Nevermind the PGA Tour, look and see how many folks golf now compared to before he came along. He single handedly made golf cool and the game has flourished.

Tiger is a cub…you are a racist….No actually, you are an ignorant, misinformed, judgmental racist.

Let’s just enjoy watching Tiger while we still can and hope that he gives us more magic to tell our grand-kids about.

  • Linda D

hi there I agree that golf is just a game, and I’m not going to wish Tiger luck.He doesn’t need it.He has the skill. When you are living your life in a fish bowl there are bound to be some waves.Go get them Tiger and the intimidation level will rise!!

  • Chip

That’s nice! So, which of the GOOD players are playing this tourney?

  • Ayrton

I think he will missed cut

  • pete

Why has Fred picked Tiger for the Presidents cup it’s a insult to the other Americas like Keegan Bradley who isn’t in the Team yet and also players like Ricky Fowler and a couple of others. It just Suxs.

  • chipin4seven

Lets just see if Tiger can do the Westwood. He went as high as 200+ and made it back to number 1. Oh yeah Tiger has 14 Majors Westwood….none and counting.

  • 007

Tiger own words are….”One of my goals this year was to participate in a tournament I hadn’t played before, and now, I will.”

The Best Golfers will be playing elsewhere while Tiger and the average Golfers will be playing at the Frys.com Open. At least he will have a chance to place well in this Tournament playing against Golfers with the same caliber.

  • gedryer

we have always speculated, after his fall from grace, the best route to returning to form, would have been the EU tour, or Asian tour, places where they are a bit more forgiving, and where he has a great following; plus all the reps., but his handlers must have convinced him outerwise; reps is the answer..

  • Nelson

Until he gets rid of the instructors and go back to what he used to do, he’ll be just an average golfer from now on.

  • Tommy

Another Aussie here. Tiger “can never win” with all you Tiger haters, everything he has said and done after his HUGE mistake is never going to be good enough……admit it, you guys/gals will just never forgive or forget. My advice to all of you that fit into this section of the crowd……move on, nothing to see now, get a life.
Watching golf without it characters is like watching paint dry or a game of chess.

  • L-A

Tiger need to start over again, build is confidence… by playing more events, he could even play on the Nationwide Tour and learn to win again……

  • tom

Its completely unfair to leave all the players off of the Presidents Cup team that are playing better than him.

He should have to EARN his way onto the president’s cup team and he didn’t do that.

Like everything else in this world these days-decency and doing what’s fair and right is as dead as dead can be.

Good luck Tiger. Couples can’t help once you have to tee it up. I have no hatred toward Tiger at all-but this is completely unfair to all the guys who have COMPLETELY outplayed him this year. You aren’t suppose to get in on what you did 10 years ago, its suppose to be about what you are doing now.

Tiger, as always, bending if not breaking every rule of decency. The RIGHT thing to do would be for him to have declined the invite by Freddie. THEN people would have started to give him respect again.

Used to be a great golfer, NEVER was a good person. NEVER.

  • Rick S

Be careful what you say…Your words will be tough to swallow next year… when he gets back to his game.
Remember…he wants to be the best all time… STILL!

  • the man

    My prediction is:
    #1. he wins frys
#2. he continues with bell as his caddy for the remainder of this year.
#3. he fires Foley and goes back to Haney for nothing more than a tweak here and there.
#4. he rips the morons on the 19th. hole till they cancel the show.
#5. he announces to the world that he is engaged.
#6. he plays more times in Europe than the US,and certainly not for the appearance fees because if any of you know, the taxes on the money is ridiculous and he pays enough as it is.
“getting bored or laughing too hard yet???”
    #7. he wins a major in 2012.

    that is all….

  • David A Whitaker

Mr Woods I wish you the best in the rest of the year in whatever tournament you might play.

  • bushwacker

tiger is cubbbbbbbbbb hell yeah i/m racist and all of the names ian said.

  • Me

Some funny comments on here and clearly many of them coming from non golfers or people who really have no idea what their talking about…First of all Tiger is making a step in the right direction and i would think you will see more of this in the years to come….and regarding a comment from “chip”, it doesn’t matter which PGA TOUR event, Every player is amazing not good….they are so close in talent that any player can beat any other player on any given day!!

  • the man

When i stated morons on the tv show i was referring to 2 of them but this is not the avenue to state names

  • the man

all the woods fans have to worry about for now is whether NB3 is going to try and set tigger up with some darling and hope that she has a freind…lol oh ya…can’t wait for the call on M.D. this wednesday…let’s get ready for 10 minutes of agent scripted garbage

  • ZEK

I just can’t believe the amount of hatred going on around here. Most of the comments here I bet were written by people who just started playing and think they know everything or something about golf. People don’t understand that Tiger Woods will come back and win more tournaments to include all the majors needed to break jack’s record. The reason I say this, is because you just don’t WIN that many majors and tourneys and just lose the game because of a setback. Personally, I am just happy to be alive at a time when someone dominated the game so much that it changed the game itself.

  • udenkwo

TW will be back much stronger, so relax guys, this is just a new beginning.

  • Me

    lol “miss the cut” mediate??

he is a 65% make cut guy and won 6 tour events…16 million in earnings!!

i wish that was my nickname…love these comments

  • Graeme

kind of weird how i bought tickets to the tournament yesterday

  • Jim

Tiger Woods playing in the Frys.com OPEN makes sense, and committment is very important. He needs the work-out and the Golfers playing the Tournament are not the Top Golfers on tour. As a matter of fact, I just looked at the Scoreboard for last years Frys.com Open and only Eight of them were inside of the Top 50 on the FedEx Cup ranking.

So it looks like a good chance to pick up an easy Win.

We will have to wait until he plays in Tournaments against the Top Ranking Golfers to get a good look at how he is progressing.

  • EddyL

    Is that a Nationwide event?

  • the man

good assumption Zek…”is that a nationwide event?”

  • Carl Bennett

Hey “Me” … I wasn’t implying that Rocco hasn’t earned his place. I was only playing on the fact that he’s missed the cut to so many events this year, you’d think it was his forte.

And if (and when) he does make the cut, he’s so far back on the LB that you need a search team just to find his name. True, $16m may be an admirable sum for a career spanning nearly three decades, but compared to most golfers at it for that long, it’s pocket change.

  • Golf Logic

Why do so many people continue to make Tiger compete against his former standard to be selected to the president’s cup rather than against the other players? The suggestion that Keegan Bradley or any other player outside the current top 10 is a better choice than Tiger shows a complete misunderstanding of the presidents’s cup qualifying system and sports in general for that matter.

Tiger misses the cut at a single event and is deemed incapable of competing ever again. Young Keegan quietly missed the cut last week, his 9th MC of the season. Though capable of a high level of play he is hardly a reliable performer. Take a moment to reflect on Tiger’s missed cut at the PGA which was the 7th…OF HIS 15 YEAR CAREER!

In fact every other player from 11th to 28th in PC points ahead of Tiger has missed more cuts in the 2 year qualifying period than he has in his entire career (with the exception of Zach Johnson with 5). Furyk 10, Snedeker 18, Fowler 12, Van Pelt 11, Byrd 18, Dufner 15, etc.

Tiger has accumulated 5.3 million PC points which is a prize money total with a weighting to the current year. He has done so playing 20 tournaments which is much less than half the total of all the others except Bradley and Woodland who did not play the tour full time last year. Simple math would suggest that with a normal schedule, even playing as “poorly” as he is he would have been over 10 million points…comfortably in the top 6.

If Michael Jordan misses half the season with an injury, does it mean you don’t want him to take the free throw in the dying seconds of the NBA final?

Get a grip people. Deep down, we all know that Tiger is the easy choice no matter what form he appears to be in.

    Here here Fred…

  • Mr. Boog

    Hey Tiger Man:
    You’re as big a phony as M.Vick.
If neither one of you had gotten caught, you would both “still” be doing your disgusting “thing”.
I believe I had you pegged from the beginning. starting with the way you handled the Fuzzy Zoeller incident.
You could have stopped that fiasco from the start. Did you ? NO. You milked the media for all it’s worth and humiliated Fuzzy as much as you possibly could.
You proved to me, then, what a self centered person you are, and the “Big Truth” surfaced
when the “Hooker by Crook” story became news.
You tried squirming your way out of the truth then, but it was too late. You were caught.
    Well, enough of the old.

I don’t think I will ever understand people.
You were on your way to becoming the best of the best, (Which you in fact accomplished),
Unfortunately, during that climb you accomplished being the biggest A–hole to go along with it.
You could have been sitting on top of the world, for a long time, but you pissed it all away.
Shame on you and shame on Freddy for picking you for the President’s Cup.
I always liked Freddy, still do.
You Tiger, never did, still don’t.

  • Netshark

I am amazed at some of the comments here. Easy tournament and not the best golfers?!?! Do any of you even watch or play golf? These guys (and I mean anyone inside the top 125) have skills you can’t even imagine. To call any win on the Tour an easy win AND to belittle any of these golfers is just silly. You see week after week new golfers winning tournaments with 5 – 10 major winners in the field. These guys are good and you see golfers you have never heard of reeling off 65-65 all the time. Any win on the PGA is a good win. Ask any of the guys on tour and I am sure they would agree. But then they tee it up every weekend and compete and they can see how hard it is. We just don’t have any idea.

  • the man

Maybe if T wins he’ll ,pardon the irony…fry up sum chicken?

  • eddy

Tiger is displaying a little humility here, albeit some will say that Freddie gave him a little nudge. Tiger is also acting in a manner consistent with his statements of late. Positive steps, honest effort. GO TIGER!!!

  • Insider

Did anyone see the Bruce Edwards show,it sure was a nice tribute to him,he deserves it. They say that the nicest thing they can say about a human being when they are gone is that he was an honest and nice person….See you later Bruce!

  • Golf Logic

Remember once upon a time, all those years ago when Tiger tied the lead on the back nine at Augusta?…

Oh wait, that was 4 months ago.

    Tiger done? Get real.

    All hail Captain Fred…

  • Mike Fleissner

Mr. boog, or is it booger? You are an anonymous loser. Nobody cares who you like. You’re the phony. I’ll trust Fred Couples judgment over yours.

  • marty

whyy you all so mad. not like tiger banged your wives. He’s a golfer and where his dick goes is not our buisiness. I don’t care if hes having an orgy involving a couple midgets a donkey and oprah right now. All i want is for him to play good golf. He is the best golfer of all time and will be in winning form again.

  • Utah Friday

It’s surprising how many of you take a holier than thou attitude. One would think he slept with your sister and then didn’t call her. If you all believe he is the only guy on tour who lived a double life you are as naive and ignorant as many of your posts. I wonder if you would react the same way if it came out that Phil Mickelson had done the same thing. I guess you comment the way you do because he’s black and you’re racist. Yep, he screwed up and he’s paid a huge price…so get over it and let’s enjoy the second best professional golfer who ever picked up a club. That he’s playing in a B-Tier event is a great sign that he understands he needs to just play tourneys to improve. He’ll be back and when he does those haters on this blog will be stuck having to eat their words. That will be a fun thing to watch…the golf and those who have to admit they were wrong.

  • gdog

not a tiger fan but at least he is trying

  • Sherry S.

Great to hear that Tiger is playing a Fall event. And to all haters you just are so funny. You people claim to hate Tiger so bad yer you watch his tournaments, comment on articles about, and listen to his interviews. If you don’t like him then go comment on something else and let his fans be happy for him. Oh and to the people who say ‘Tiger who?’ you’re not making yourself look awesome for saying that…you clearly know who he is otherwise you wouldn’t go to the effort to click on an article about, read it and then comment. Anyway…GO TIGER!! Please shut these people up…

  • Golf Logic

    Utah Friday,
Second best player to pick up a club?

I’ll assume you mean Jack is number 1 for winning more majors.

So by that reasoning, is Old Tom Morris the 19th best player to pick up a club?

    Era matters.

Jack was great. But even he knows that Tiger is better.

  • Juansky

Tiger shmiger, he’s washed up by his own doing. Talk about double suicide. He abandons his family and now changes his swing….idiot.

  • Mike Fleissner

Juansky: You’re the idiot. He has shared placement of his kids and has obviously not abandoned them that way or financially. And I’ll take his judgement of the golf swing and his golf swing over yours. What qualifies you, you pompous windbag?

  • fuzzy 2

Mr.Boog………..Could not agree with you more ! When Woods did what he did to a very classy individual like Fuzzy I began telling my friends that one day this piece of crap who just happened to be a great player would show everyone what a bottom feeder he really is . And boy oh boy did he ever .
There are a lot of great young players out on tour right now so I hardly think we need another Tigre but they sure could use another Fuzzy Zoeller…..and if you don’t get why , then you just don’t know professional golf .
All I know is this….I would sure as hell rather have one of my grandsons grow up to be like Fuzzy than embarass me by being like Tigre .
Ask yourself this….have you seen Kultilda lately ????

  • Wayne

Tiger was as good as he was because of his head not because of his talent. Lots of guys hit as far as he did, straighter than he did, and hit more greens. But Tiger always won because he was determined not to lose. He was mentally way tougher than anyone else on the tour. Now he’s not.

  • Peter

It is entertaining to watch Tiger try to rehab his image to regain sposorships to get some much needed cash. Because if you think for one minute that he cares about competing for his country in the Presidents Cup, or whether Frys is doing nice things for the tour, then you are buying his and his agents ACT. He is so full of it. I think his main regrets about his fall are that he is not winning and that he is going broke. Crapping on his family, friends, reputation, sport, and fans doesn’t matter nearly as much as wins and cash. Beacause of the types of women that he hangs out with, there will always be a steady supply of skanky broads to satisfy that side of him. You watch what he does to the media if he doesn’t start winning soon. He will turn on them to pay them back for their harsh comments about him. As for now, they (the media)are holding their breath, crossing their fingers that he improves, and sadly they are kissing his behind to stay in his good graces. But this arengement can’t last too much longer. Rick Reilly has jumped ship, and more will follow soon.

  • the man

I’m baking cookies and can’t get my beer to wash down the dough. when does the bird walk around with a taxi cab??HUH…didn’t think you’d know.lmao

  • mickey

Wow. What has come of this world? To err is human, to forgive divine. We let murderers, rapists and pedophiles out of jail and yet a guy sleeps around on his wife and the world is coming to an end? Tiger gave not only golfers, but people all over the world joy and excitement and showed dominance of a sport for a long time. Just let him and everyone else play and lets enjoy the game. All this rehtoric is pathetic…REALLY!!

  • Pawatnimit

Oh verry good news.we hope so you come back for number 1 again.

  • pete

Golf Logic you a di%k. It’s so unfair that Tigers playing the Presidents cup. As a golfer I think he’s awesome but he’s hardly played and should have played in that compm leading up to the playoffs. Bradley should be rewarded for his major win and other win as well.
It’s a bit like when Michelle Wie played in those Pga tour events I’ve got no problem with Wie playing in a men’s field but she should have to qualify because someone like me who’s a mini tour player that needs the money might have missed out. It’s not Michelles’ fault though she is awesome.

  • Golfcrack

Bad idea of Couples. Woods is maybe a man for the foursomes but never for a single matchplay. He’s lost the ability to win. Ask Duval …

  • seff

TW needs more than one tournament. He needs to play lots of them. He needs to get back to the roots of the game and do some serious rebuilding. He needs to get off his own pedestal. He might be rich, but he is no longer a superstar. Had Fred not stipulated he play more, Tiger would have had the arrogance to simply turn up to the Pres Cup.

It is about ratings, and Fred is one of the victims. The other is the better golfer whose place he took on the team.

  • brad

tiger will dominate again, a strong mind will always beat a strong swing.

  • JB

Golf Logic just took the words out of my mouth. I would also like to add the fact that Tiger with 5/5 points won in the presidents cup 2 years ago and 3/4 points won in the Ryder Cup last year was the best player in both of those competitions/tournaments proving that he IS the best player in that form of the game. Hope he wins in California…
    GO TIGER

  • SC

Last time I checked the Presidents Cup was match play not stroke play, and Freddie knows that TW will have an impact ! As for the other harsh words written on here – I cant remember any sports person being the best for as long as TW was…remember the length of a golf professional’s career is way longer than most other sports. Golfers dont decline until after 40 usually, so I expect to see a few more W’s from TW over the next 5 years.

  • EddyL

Let’s Hope he misses the cut!

  • Chuck Schick

“It is entertaining to watch Tiger try to rehab his image to regain sposorships to get some much needed cash”…..I am rolling in the floor at this one. Badly needed cash? Oh how the public is so misinformed and/or out of touch.

  • Aaron Smith

I like what you had to say Wayne with the exception of people hitting more greens in regulation than Tiger. From 99-08, with the exception of 2-3 years, Tiger lead the GIR stat, and the years he didn’t, he was right at the top. Combine that with, what used to be, Tiger’s putting ability and, as you said, his mental abilities to grind and put a score together and not carelessly lose strokes, and you had the best player ever. There is no doubt he is better than Nicklaus was but that is just because of the times. In Nicklaus day, if you spent 3 hours a day on your game outside of a tournament, you were a hard worker. Today, that will end you up on the Nationwide TOUR. Today players are in shape, have swing coaches, mental coaches, etc.. It’s also a lot harder to win today because, a story that has barely gotten any coverage despite its impact, is equipment. Equipment is the only reason Donald is number 1 in the world. Equipment has made it so players don’t have to hit the ball on the button every time to get a good result. Technology has brought so many people close together because, as Hogan said: Golf is not about how good your good shots are, its about how good your bad shots are. Basically meaning, its about consistency. Anyone can hit a good shot, but are your bad shots in the bunker, or 20 feet away from the hole? Back to the point, because of all the differences, there are probably a dozen players today who are better than Nicklaus ever was just because of the times. However, had Nicklaus been primed for this era, who knows how good he might have been. We can’t say Nicklaus was the best ever, but for now, we can definitely say he was the most winningest and, over the long haul, the most dominant player in history. Only time will tell if Tiger can take that away. If Tiger doesn’t, trust me, no player will ever get close to their totals again with the parity on Tour..and its only getting harder and harder to win.

  • Donald Bickersham

I’ll bet 95% of you who were not going to watch the Frys.com Open, will be watching it now. Enough said.

  • Tomas

Interesting – how big pile of crap it’s possible to create, when a bunch of idiots needs to show their jelaousy and hatred.. let’s call it “opinions”, of course.

  • James

The haters will never eat their words but they will disappear. Never to be heard from again. Haters love to hate and don’t know how to do anything else. When Tiger wins, and he will, the haters will go back to their little holes and sulk.

  • Gord

To Jerry and all of you other Tiger haters, your constant bashing of him makes you all look like a bunch of babbling idiots that nobody wants to listen to.If he does nothing for the game then why are the sponsors and the officials for the Fry’s. com going ga ga over him playing ” MONEY “! Tiger’s playing will double the gallery and triple the TV audiance, people just love to watch him play, and when he plays well he brings the ” I can’t beleive he hit that shot ” to the game

  • Linda D

Hi there everyone!! I USED to be a Tiger hater!!What changed?I was watching a Tourney that Tiger was in and was hoping even praying for him to miss his putt!Talk about over reacting!!Also I now feel sorry for him for ALL the flack that he has gotten!!Really can any of us do what we could in our 20′s? Tiger is now 36,GO GET THEM TIGER!!

  • James

    Linda D, Bless you.

  • John B

I have never been a fan of Tiger but I wish him well. The past is the past and people need to move on. Tiger needs to move on too. He needs the attitude of it’s none of his business what people think of him. The haters will always hate him and he can win back the others.

  • VJ

Jessie James wrote, “Personally I don’t believe any of the claims from that group of money hungry women, least of all Elin. Remember guys that nothing was ever proven in relation to Tiger and all those women. Not one piece of video footage or photo has ever come forward. Some of these women were porn stars don’t forget… not exactly the most believable women in the world.”

And I say, if the glove don’t fit, you must acquit!!! How quickly we forget.

  • Tim

In other news, the Frys.com Open ratings, and ticket sales more than tripled the previous record in the event’s history. Oh, but Tiger does nothing for the game. Tell that to sponsors of the event, CBS covering the event, heck, even the folks selling consessions. I’m sick and tired of these clowns on these threads posting crap like that. If you don’t like him, then stop clicking on every link and reading every article and watching every event that has the word Woods attached to it! The man is an icon to the game. He’s done just as much for golf as golf has done for him. Its more global now than it ever has been because of him. The purses are larger now more than ever because of him. The evolution of equipment is growing faster now more than ever because of him. The competition is more fierce now more than ever because more players are in better shape now and take they’re workout and practice sessions more seriously now than ever because of him! Anyone that cannot see and respect that needs to get there head out of there you know what.

  • Tiger Hater

Do any of you think that this fraud would be playing in the Frys.com if he had not been selected by a man that I used to have a lot of respect for, are delusional. He was strong-armed by the media and networks so they could increase there readers and ratings. I was looking forward to not seeing this joke on TV over the 3 days that is the Presidents Cup. Now all i’m going to read, see and here about is him, not the 9 other players that earned there way on the team. Does Y.E Yang mean anything to anyone. Once we was beaten by him(thus crushing his aura of invincibility) he has regressed into what you see now. He is feared by no player inside the top 100, his game is mediocre at best. he may win a tournament here and there, but will never, never dominate again. This is what happens when his father made a deal with the devil…The devil is getting his due. Decline the nomination and let someone else play who desereves to, not some washed up Fraud!!

  • hotwater

looks what happen here. tiger’s new on. wow more than 100 dudes are love it. love or hat.he is still super star on the pgatour. that’s reality.no other news is like a tiger news. hey, haters you’re tigers fan too.^^ have a great day all.

  • Lovetofade

I wonder what lower tier non-exempt tour player looking for a place to play got bumped out of the Fry’s by Tiger.

  • Donald Bickersham

Tiger Hater writes: Does Y.E. Yang mean anything to anyone? Why yes, he is one of a long list of ONE TIME MAJOR WINNERS. Right up there with Rich Beem, Steve Elkington, Al Geiberger, Shaun Micheel, Hal Sutton, Jim Turnesa, Johnny Revolta, Bob Tway…etc. You ge the picture. He proves on any given week, any PGA golfer can win at least major. Come talk to me when Y.E. Yang wins oh, say, 14! Yang was not the reason for Tiger’s downfall. You have to be kidding right?

  • Tommy

Who Cares…Oh great now TV will show every shot TW hits and not show the tournament leaders. Golf can and will survive without TW.

  • Tiger Hater

Your missing the point, He had never lost a major when he held the 54 hole lead. After his shield of invicibility was shattered, his life and career have spiraled downward and out of control. No one, I repeat no one, is afraid of him anymore. Yet golf fans are continually force fed him when he is a non factor in a tournament. Do the other 60 players that miss the cut have their every shot shown or brought up by announcers. Of course not. He is yesterdays news and not worthy of all the media attention. Hooray for the young guns how no longer fear him.

  • Jason Gibson

I think Tiger is thinking presidents cup now, he will need to get into contention at the Fry’s if he is going to compete at the Presidents Cup. Good Luck Tiger!

  • eoin king

Im confused….doesnt tiger have exempt priveleges on tour.He can play anywhere he wants to.How does taking a low ranking players spot come into it,if mahan or fowler or watson play…are they stealing somebodys spot????

  • Golf Logic

If you are not a Tiger fan you are not a golf fan. What more compelling viewing is there in all of sports than to see the best player of all time struggle with his game, his age, his life and a changing landscape in his sport? Real golf fans want to see him play no matter what he did or didn’t do off the golf course.

But let’s be honest with ourselves. We are all Tiger fans. Even you moral high grounders scroll down the leaderboard to find his name if it’s not atop the first page. If he were in the same room as you it would be the only thing you could think about.

    That’s greatness.

So let’s appreciate the greatest of the greats while we still can.

  • the man

When Tiger wins 2 majors and 6 other events all you tiger haters will be jumping on the bandwagon. It’s human nature and Americans are historically famous for it. Let’s not forget Simon Johnson….You all hated him till he won gold medals like they were circus carnie trinkets….DUH???

  • Jim

Good on you Tiger. Forget the rankings load and play where people have never gotten a chance to see you.

I’d love to see you back at the top so that the guys trying to take your place can go at you head to head – something you never had the chance to do with Jack.

  • Donald Bickersham

Tiger Hater…Tigers career spiraled out of control due to personal indescretions which blew up into a public matter. Lost his wife, integrity, respect, on and on which would put anybody back. He suffered physical injury as well and needed surgery. Remember, golf is played on a 5 inch course between your ears. When his life came undone, so did his golf. It wasn’t due to “losing a major after holding a 54 hole lead” to Y.E. Yang. It’s a matter of opinion but hope he returns to form. Expect him to because you don’t accomplish what he has on the course without drive and belief in yourself.

  • Numo

To Sonny; “He has failed miserably on all levels”? Well, his clubs seems to have walked the walk at least. You think it’s failing miserably winning 14 majors and 95 times total as a pro? Get real man.. He’s litterally carried the Tour for 15 years. And for those thinking he’ll never come back; ’98 was a bad year. Then came the stretch of ’03-’04, also bad years. I believe he can afford ’09 throughout ’11 to be “bad” years without winning any majors.. That’s the kind of pattern I see at least.

  • Salute to Eldrick

It wouldn’t matter if Tiger never put another tee in the ground:

    1. Tiger
    2. Jack

  • the man

the only number tiger has past jack on is whores

  • JB

Who cares? And greatest ever? That would be Jack.

  • stevestrickerfan

Hey Golf Logic, I didn’t know that was invented when Eldrick played his first event? This game has been around a heckuva lot longer than that snooty little puke and it’ll be here way past him.

  • john

How great would it be to see him miss the cut playing against second tier nobody’s in an event that normally gets next to zero viewership?

  • Frank Licklighter

    yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnn

  • Sam Snead

    yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn X2

  • Salute to Eldrick

For all of you who continue to think Jack was better because he won more majors…

Are James Braid and John Henry Taylor better than Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh?

Era matters and we all know it.

Pay some respect. Tiger has won more tournaments in less time and less starts on tougher courses against WAY more players who are WAY better.

It’s not even close. Jack was unreal. Tiger makes him look silly.

  • Salute to Eldrick

Hey Sam and Frank, if you’re so bored why are you hanging out on a chatboard talking about Tiger?

Because you wish you could be like him.

  • Sam Snead

actually I’m dead so you can’t hurt my feelings. would you like some apple pie and iced tea? and actually i wish i could be just like you honey.lol

  • Linda

James…Thank YOU so very much!!Bless you.

    ATTENTION!!!
my son has been printing these ridiculous posts and having just caught him you can be assured there will be no more stupid contact from this computer.

  • Linda D

Right on,Tim!!!And don’t any of us forget that Tiger started “The First Tee”.Need I say more?

  • Peter

    “Chuck Schick”
I am not mis-informed at all! Why do you think Stevie was not payed for all of that time? Why would Tiger take that wierd low-paying deal in Japan? His phone isn’t ringing because outside of Nike (which has no soul) Tigers name is poison to the rest of the corporate world who want nothing to do with him. Who would? He is an absolutley awful person! He has been/was an outstanding golfer, but Mike Tyson was an equally great boxer, Barry Bonds maybe an even better baseball player, etc, etc. That was all then, and this is now. If he doesn’t start winning, he will go broke. Mark my words.

  • eoin king

A question….why is that most of u hate tiger so much?Does a complete strangers personal affairs so to speak, have that much importance in your lives

  • sam

Play vegas baby justins tournament and meet lots of babes. that’s the tiger we all know.

  • eddy

Will the course be made more difficult because Tiger is playing? Set up officials could quite easily tinker with the layout, greens sped up, pins tucked, f/ways pinched, rough heightened, we might see a very different test at the 2011 FRYS.com than in past years. Keep an eye on past field stroke avg. versus this year. They could just as easily turn it into a free-for-all flag hunt. My guess is they toughen it up, that gives Tiger credible response to the inevitable questions he will have to answer. A BIRDIEFEST in which he needs to go real low everyday? A putting contest where 30 guys are jarring 15 footers at 80% ? That would get ugly, real quick. He isn’t making putts, period. Until he gets a handle on his putting he can’t win. Making the Tee to Green more difficult for the whole field, and toying with pins, will prevent everyone from giving Tiger what would appear to be a spanking. It is possible that Tiger has found something in his practice time, and the putter has improved. For his sake, I would hope that is the case. GO TIGER!!!

  • Doug

I laugh at all you softheads who cheer for that moron Woods. No wonder the country is going to hell.

  • Shawn

TIGER WOODS = GREATEST DOUCHEBAG OF ALL TIME (THAT ALSO HAPPENS TO BE A GREAT GOLFER)

  • Duane

Why didn’t he play at the Wyndham in order to qualify for the playoffs? He is only doing this now in order to save face for being selected by Fred prematurely. Its good though for golf as Frys.com will have their most profitable tournament which will benefit their charity.

  • The Fatman

OK Tiger religious followers, get your story straight. Some of you are using the argument that the players at the Frys open are just as good as any other player on tour, yet when Tiger “h@ters” use the same argument to say that any of them can beat him you get all upset.
    What’s the story then?

On the other hand, Tiger reiligious followers also belittle Kegan Bradley for wining a Major and missing the cut the very next week. But then you don’t have a problem with Tiger playing in a tournament where most of the players have to play because they either missed the cut or finished the tournaments way down the leaderboard during the regular season. You actually say that the field is challening enough and pay some respect to those players.

This double standard is what Golf fans are upset about, and that’s the reason why any article about Tiger is so fun to read, the comments are simpliy hilarious.

    So.
Either all the players on tour have raised to Tiger’s Level
    or
Tiger has become an average tour player. (Just as exceptional as all of them are).

  • Sam Snead

my head is not soft Doug,it’s rather hard

  • Duane

Linda D you must be confused. Tiger did not start the First Tee.

  • D. Noonan

    “So.
Either all the players on tour have raised to Tiger’s Level
    or
Tiger has become an average tour player. (Just as exceptional as all of them are)”……..I kind of compare it to an injured Cy Young pitcher being sent down to AAA for a few games to work his game back out on a rehab stint. Tiger is far from average or AAA so to speak.

  • Linda D

Sorry Duane!! I’m new at this “golf stuff” and 67 years old, forgetful, etc. Who did start “The First Tee?” I would like to know.Thank you for your input.

  • Linda D

By the by….this is for everyone out there…do you think anyone will shoot a 62 like Charley Hoffman did last year?

  • Ryan Aussie

Who cares,if he does he does and if he doesn’t he doesn’t…

  • The Ol' Guy

Tiger Woods will start winning when the PGA God’s tell him he can win again.. Take it to the bank brothers, he has almost paid his penance in full and will very shortly pull out the peep-sights and eliminate some of the cast members who have been trying to generate a little golf interest in Tigers’ absence…

  • Legendone1

1.) Tiger Woods is NOT a GREAT American
2.) Taking in consideration when they played, courses, equipment and competition Tiger falls somewhere between 9-11.
3.) He’s desperate to win and most of the BIG boys will NOT be at the Frys.com

  • PJ

Oh have the mighty have fallen. Tiger Woods playing in a Fall Event.

  • Joao

Yes, for some reason there are a LOT of TIGER-HATERS… it’s really PATHETIC, though. As a player, Tiger’s overall golfing record to date (notwithstanding his pursuit of Nicklaus as a pro) is PHENOMENAL: 3 consecutive US Junior Amateurs, 3 consecutive US Amateurs, 14 Professional Majors, 71 PGA Tournaments and 95 tournaments worldwide. I’m not interested in Tiger’s personal life… but I AM interested in seeing him get back into competing at the highest level. Why? BECAUSE TIGER GENERATES EXCITEMENT. Besides, the TIGER-HATERS will be very interested in rooting AGAINST HIM, so even THEY would have to admit it would be more interesting to see him on the leaderboard!

  • Phenom

PJ, you do what you have to do to rise again.

  • James

Oh yes the haters will be there with bells on. They will be cheering to the top of their voices. “I hate Tiger, I hate Tiger,I hate Tiger. So pitiful. But that is what haters do. If they had a brain they would be dangerous. Lucky for us they don’t.

  • Linda D

First of all,Thank you Duane for getting back so quick with the info!!And to Tiger Fans everywhere!!Don’t worry about negative comments regarding Tiger. He’s a big boy and he can take it and he’ll come back stronger than before.Remember that saying… what doesn’t kill us,strengthens us!!

  • L.

Awhile ago,Tiger mentioned that he would play in Notah Begay III Foundation Challenge tomorrow.Don’t know if it will still happen though Just wanted to let you know. Does anyone have a favorite for the Deutsche Bank Championship this week?

  • Peter K. Connolly

Couples needs a brain enema. Woods needs a shrink. What the hell has happened to golf?

We still want to win, And the sponsors want to make more money, the mothers milk of our lives. That’s why Freddie picked him.

  • James

    You haters really suck.

  • almost a 6 handicap

I have a good feeling that V.J. will be there on Sunday to contend. The man works too hard for me NOT to pull for him. I remember when hard work and determination was the key to success. Now a days it’s a 6 pack stomach, striking good looks and the odd round under par. Collecting pay checks seems to be the way now. As far as Tiger Woods is concerned may he find happiness and another love because I feel his domination days are over. I think he’ll give Jacks’ major run a few years and whether he attains it or not, will pack professional golf in at age 40.
only my 2 gents gents…and ladies.

  • almost a 6 handicap

I am of course talking about V.J. in the FED EX CUP tourney, sorry to go off topic.

  • Calle

Tell you this. Anyone who can challange the the fact that Tiger is one of the most exiting golfer who ever walk this planet? Don´t think so. Elin and Tiger are now divorced, he was an a..hole during the marriage but realy how many men hasn´t been that, and should be allowed to proceed with their lifes. Let us hope will see Tiger again with that explosive will to win tournaments. It will certainly put me in my TV-chair and Í´m even more certain that so will millions of other lovers of this game.

  • Coach

I’m so glad Tiger is playing now Ian and Kelly will have something to talk about. And I can get that warm fuzzy feeling when he sets up for a fade and say that the ball isn’t drawing as much as it used to. I love Tiger! WAS (what a scumbag)

  • Nick

Tiger needs to grow up and learn some humility. He needs to treat people decently and start tipping because we all know he is super cheap.

  • jacksRecordStandsForever

    God will NOT be mocked…
    eldrick,
    Buckle Up!

  • john-ny

why not play every tourniment he can until the pres cup, i mean sorry to say but hes no longer the draw he once was, now all he seems to bring to a golf tourniment is excuses and frustration on why hes not top of the leaderboard. with all due respect he was the greatest but hes fallin far from that, he will soon be out of top 100 in world >>> i think he should be going to europe to play if hes stuck for tourniments he became too snobby with his tourniment selection just like alot of these big names are becoming, eg mcilroy, and harrington did that also after he won majors and look whats happend to him, these guys should play whenever they are fit and healthy to do so , not when they get 1million to appear, greed has killed the game.

  • Louise

Comparing Tiger to Jack is like comparing apples to oranges!!!!Both of them GREAT golfers but in their own eras!!To everyone Enjoy the game and play ball!!!

  • James

Where did God come from in this conversation? The real nuts come out at night.

  • Razib

Agree with John-ny he should (must) be playing more tournaments before Pres. Cup. More compete means near to victory and his winning rhythm. Focus on Making-shot, consistancy and accurracy. Able to make a shot all the clubs in the bag including the putter. Hate of waiting “When will he play???”

  • Steve

Tiger Woods…………Greatest Player OF HIS TIME…….his time has past, retire while your name is still a little credible.

  • john

Hey Salute to Eldrick, nobody on here said Jack was better than Eldrick because he won more majors. What we are saying is that Jack was the greatest of all time, period. Maybe you’re golf watching days started in 1996 with Eldrick but for the true golf history fan, nobody and I mean nobody was as more important to the game of golf than Jack. If they played head to head at their best Jack wins 8 out of 10 times. Jack was intimidated by no one and that what was what made your hero hard to beat. Without that, Jack wipes his a**.

  • Jim

go tiger! greatest golfer, most illustrious player ever – just lookit the list of this freaking comment page, huh!

  • Salute to Eldrick

    john,
Actually number of majors won is by far the most common argument made by anybody in favor of Jack in that debate. Perhaps you have other reasons to think so but most see it as a simple math equation.

I am old enough to have watched plenty of golf in the pre-Tiger era and have nothing but the utmost respect for Jack’s career and what he meant to the game. But ask anybody inside the ropes without a camera in their face and you will hear most call it a coin toss or give the edge to Tiger.

For you to throw out absurd numbers like 8/10 head to head is disrespectful to both Jack and Tiger. And I think it shows a misunderstanding of the depth and parity that exists on tour now and never did when Jack played.

Ask yourself honestly…if Phil Mickelson was 20 years old in 1960 would he have won more than 4 majors in his career?

And if Gary Player teed it up today would he really be able to win more than 1 or 2?

  • Twink

Just got done reading about Tiger’s ex-wife,it seems her boy friend ( a billioner’s son) used to date Tiger’s ex-girlfriend Ratchel. However sounds like she was a little mad when she found out but is still dating him Money,Money,Money read it on Yahoo under her name Elin, showed her with her & Tigers kids charley and sam at the beach also picture of her boyfriend.

    @Salute to Eldrick

The argument favoring Jack is not only about Majors won, but also how many runner-up finishes, top 5 finishes etc.
But more important is the fact that he played against a field that was extremely competitive. See the list of Major winners who competed during Jack’s time and try to compare that to Tiger’s fellow competitors.

Jack won his first major against Arnold(7 majors won, 2 in Jack’s time), and during Jack’s career, these are some of the names and number of Majors won by each. I’m excluding some other Major winners with 3 Major wins or less.
    Gary Player(9 Majors) (7 in Jack’s time)
Lee Trevino(6 Majors) (all 6 in Jack’s time)
Raymond Floyd(4 Majors) (all 4 in Jack’s time)
    Peter Thomson(5 Majors) (1 in Jack’s time)
Tom Watson(8 Majors) (all 8 in Jack’s time)
    Seve Ballesteros(5 Majors)

Tiger’s competition, again, using the same logic, I’m not including Major winners with 3 Majors or less.
    Phil Mickelson(4 Majors)
If I were to include Players with 3 Major wins then the list grows but it is still very short.
Ernie Ells (2 in Tiger’s time)
Vijay (all 3 in Tiger’s time)
Payne Stewart (only 1 in Tiger’s time)
Padraig (all 3 in tiger’s time)

So, during Jack’s career from 1962 through 1986, he wins 18 majors while his top competitors win another 28 Majors. That tells you right there how good Jack was.

Tiger has won 14 Majors with only one competitor winning more than 3.

That’s why Tiger SEEMS TO BE A GREATER player than Jack. That’s because people since 1997 are used to almost only watch/hear/read Tiger’s name in every golf show/publication. In Jack’s time you’d see his name along with the likes of Player, Watson, Trevino etc.

  • Numo

Good point, although it has to be corrected a little, I think..

First of all, we have technology. I know some are sick of this talk, but fact is that it IS better today, and thus more players are better and competition stiffer. I believe it was easier so to speak, to distinguish yourself from the field if you really wanted, back in those days. Today, it helps to be in shape but just look at Bubba Watson. He hits it a mile, and granted he must be in shape, but he is not bulked up at all like some others.

You had to maybe “play better” in relation to the course and be a better/smarter golfer to play your way around and not just bomb it and make good saves with wedges. I acknowledge that. But having that said, to win today is certainly not easier, simply because of the field – the depth, width, and skill level. It’s always hard to compare different eras.

So was the best, hard to say, Nicklaus beat more famous names that wound up with more majors. But just because the majors are divided between more players today doesn’t mean that there’s no excellent players up for the challenge. In fact I would say it’s the other way round, with more “very good” players today. Just because there were more names back then doesn’t mean Tiger doesn’t have to beat good Tour players that peaks and plays unbelieveable golf during the majors.

It’s hard to determine the best of all time. But if we look at the measurestick available, number of won majors, it has to be in Jacks favor. Don’t really know about his number of Tour/Worldwide/Total wins, but fact is still fact. Having this said, Woods IS STILL ahead of Jack when it comes to the pace at which you’re winning. That counts for both majors and “regular” Tour wins I think.

The guy has a lot of time on his side and will be back. Already next year I think, with at least a Tour win but probably several, and maybe a major. Might sound crazy after his recent play, and his what, first missed cut in a major. But that’s what I think could happen if he gets the proper time to practice during the off season.

Good move to play Frys.com Open, shows that he cares about captain Couples orders to play more competitive. He sure listens to others and not only go with what he thinks is the best.

  • Dr No

Why don’t Woods and Feherty hang out together they seem to have the same interest in peoples anatomy!

  • Carmen

I believe Tiger needs to concentrate in the game of golf ONLY. What happened last year, though not admirable) is personal and past. I think no one knows the golf courses playinG so well and so much, that he doesn’t need new trainer, new nothing. What he needs to do is decide to restart his game and thats it. I wish I could talk to him and i’m sure he will agree with me. Besides no matter who plays if Tiger is not playing the ratingS show what he can do for golf. I’m 75, don’t play golf, but love to see him play at all times. Tiger take my advise and just remember how you use to play and win and do it all over again and you will see. I WANT TO SEE THE SAME TIGER I WATCHED FOR YEARS.

  • Jones

@carmen, sir, I have a healthy respect for people your age watching sport, really, it’s a humbling experience. Now then, where do you get to see the ratings or do you just imagine them?

  • James

Jones, you need to check your ratings. Ratings go up big time when Tiger is in the field.

  • Hao

HEY FATMAN – you know what it tells me ,that maybee jack only had about half a dozen competitors capable of winning majors, could you please inform us all who out of this list of yours was the holder of all four majors at the same time? cheers/.

  • Doc Joe

What everyone fails to realize is that the only mistake Tiger ever made was getting married at that point in his life. Sheltered as a youngster, he never experienced the years of needed bachelorhood, like a Derek Jeter has. His agent failed him by not forcing the idea of not getting married down his throat. Women predominately hate him for his actions and men by and large could care less. He can now only move on with his life and deal with the fallout. Give the guy a break, he did not commit a crime and people tend to forget all the good he has done for the game and for society. Just look at the good his Tiger Woods Foundation has done. Ask yourself this? Why was the PGA championship viewership down some 43% this year?

  • Gord

Fatman I have to agree with Hao, you gave Jack’s whole list of competitor’s capable of winning a major where at this time there are so many good players on tour any one of a hundred every week can win, even Phil. You have guy’s like Dustin Johnson, Luke Donald, Adam Scott, Rory Macalroy, Bubba Watson, Steve Stricker, Jason Day and the list goes on & on.Sorry but Jack, as good as he was, never had this much competition!!

  • Jones

Hey James, give me the link for the ratings…

  • President Freddie

I don’t know why some fans are getting on my case for taking one of my Captain’s picks to place Tiger on the US Team for the President’s Cup! What are Captain’s picks for, anyway? Let me explain MY view: 1) Tiger was a key player for the team in 2009, and is very enthusiastic to be part of this 2011 team 2) Tiger plays very well in Australia and, in particular, has a lot of playing experience at Royal Melbourne, 3) although he hasn’t played much competitive golf this year, Tiger has convinced me that his confidence in his swing is returning and that, unlike some of the other players, is “fired up” to go Down Under to perform well… for Tiger, 2012 is just around the corner, and 4) Tiger is Tiger: as a fierce competitor that has ever played the game!

  • Doc Joe

Fred. You don’t have to justify the pick to anyone. You are the Captain like a coach in any other sport and this is your team. Quite frankly, I think picking Tiger will boost his own confidence level knowing that there are still people who believe in him. It is really easy to kick a man when he is down and extremely difficult to go out on a limb to actually support the same person. I admire your courage. Good luck and WIN.

  • Linda Davis

To everyone who thinks Tiger is a better golfer than Jack; this question…Why do you think a very young Tiger make it his goal to copy Jack’s swing and career?

  • Linda Davis

That saying granted Tiger might surpass Jack’s count of the majors but aren’t we putting the cart before the horse? One step at a time. Maybe even baby steps.Again..GO GET THEM TIGER!!!

  • Mike H

can not wait to see you play you are the main reason I watch golf on TV you tiger haters need to get a grip

    Jones, where is your link?

  • Duane

Nicklaus kicked Tiger’s butt in the 1998 Masters when he was 58 years old finishing sixth. Tiger will be on his 25th swing change when he is 58.

  • Fatman

From 1962 to 1986, there were 22 other players with only 1 Major win. (I’m not counting those with 2 or 3 majors), add to that the handful of players that won 28 Majors combined, that adds up to more than 12 years of Majors being won by someone other than Jack.

So, if I were to believe the argument that the Field is deeper now, are you saying then that we should not expect Tiger to dominate as much as he did in the past, and potentially see Tiger celebrate his 47th birthday before he catches up with Jack?

I’m not pro nor against Tiger. I would like to see Tiger regain his form and get to see some great golf. And if it isn’t too much to ask, to see him show the courtesy and etiquette that we all love about Golf.

But the reason I’m challenging some of the more dedicated Tiger Fans, is because if it favors Tiger, then the argument is that the current field is really deep. But if it doesn’t (like McIlroy or Bradley winning their first Major), then the current field is lousy, boring, and there’s no reason to watch golf anymore.

I for one believe that the current field is really good. I believe any of these guys can challenge and beat Tiger anytime, and for me, that’s the reason golf is even more exciting now than when it was a one man show. I loved it when Y.E. stole the 2009 PGA from Tiger’s claws and when McDowell made those final putts at the Chevron. Not because I wanted Tiger to loose, but because it made it exciting again. On the other hand, I was also excited during this year’s last round of the Masters, seeing Tiger make some amazing shots, but also seeing how the field responded. That’s golf, that’s drama!

So guys, I send you a virtual “shake of hands”, and with my hat off, until the next round!

  • Hao

who out of your list has held all four majors at the same time please .

  • WatchingAgain

Does Tiger still have it? Just take a look at the responses to a Frys.com announcement. I am just glad that I can watch golf again. My wife only lets me watch if Woods is playing.

As far as the rest of his life goes I asked the women around here “If the greatest chefs were constantly offering you their wares for free and you were on a diet….”

The only mistake that he made was getting married. They would not have been able to make a profit if he was single.

His greatest contribution to golf is making people talk about it. He is a multimillionaire and does not need to golf. I for one am glad he is still trying. I would like to see a battle of Woods and the young guns all with their “A” games.

    Off of my soapbox now.

  • Salute to Eldrick

    Fatman,
Your arguments for a tougher field in Jack’s era due to more multiple major winners has been made before. And though it might make sense on the surface you actually have it exactly backwards as Numo has said.

And this is not simply an opinion. It has been shown statistically many times that there are now more players shooting lower scores on tougher courses, hitting closer approaches, having tighter dispersions with their wedges, getting up and down more often from more difficult places and having better putting averages on faster greens. Go ask Dave Pelz if there are more great scoring game players today or 30 years ago (based on pure objective measurements).

The fact that Mickelson and Singh and Els are 3 and 4 time winners in a sea of 1 time wonders is testament to the fact that there are MORE great champions today then there were in Jack’s time.

How many majors would Phil Mickelson have won if he played in the 60′s and 70′s?

    Only 4?…gimme a break.

Tiger’s record is unmatched. Even by the Great Jack to whom I also salute.

  • Salute to Eldrick

Ever watch a basketball game, football game, hockey game from the 60′s and even 70′s?

It is apparent to the naked eye that it is not the same level as today.

Do you know of any world records in any sport that have not been set in the last 10 years?

Sport evolves. Athletes are better. Period.

Is golf any different? Not on your life.

Jack was amazing. Tiger is better.
