LEMONT, Ill. – Ernie Els’ quest to become the first player to start the final regular-season event outside the top 125 and make it all the way to Atlanta has ended.
Els shot a final-round 1-under 70 on Sunday, leaving him at 3 over for the BMW Championship. He’s currently projected to finish in 67th place in the FedExCup standings.
Els had entered the Wyndham Championship, the final regular-season event, ranked No. 126th in points. But he played his way into the Playoffs, then continued to advance after The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship. He came into Cog Hill ranked 68th.
Els has not missed a TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola since the tournament became the finale of the Playoffs, and has missed just two other TOUR Championships since 1994. He was one of five players who had played in each of the four TOUR Championships since the creation of the FedExCup, and had never finished outside the top 20 in FedExCup points in any of those four years.
Sorry to see ernie not qualify but he has played poorly all year and the long putter just has not helped, good luck for the rest of the year ernie.
