Just like that, Tiger finds his groove

Woods interview

Following his second-round 68, Tiger Woods talks to Fred Albers from the PGA TOUR Network on SiriusXM about his play in the 2011 Frys.com Open.

By Brian Wacker, PGATOUR.COM

SAN MARTIN, Calif. — The goal Friday for Tiger Woods was to shoot 64.

”I figured if I shot 64, I’d probably be between two and four back,” he said. “That was kind of my mindset going out.”

Instead, he had to settle for a 68.

After struggling in the opening rounds, Woods said putting and posture on his swing were the two biggest problems. Friday, he appeared to have fixed both.

Woods made six birdies and three bogeys and even though he took two more putts than he did a day earlier with 29, that doesn’t begin to tell the story. For one, he hit 14 greens in regulation compared to just nine a day earlier. For another, Woods missed three putts inside 6 feet in the first round and none inside that distance Friday. Instead of losing strokes to the field in putting, he actually gained 0.493.

At 1 under through 36 holes, Woods is seven shots off the lead but for him it’s all about the process.

“It’s always a progression,” he said. “You’ve got to do it on the range at home and got to do it on the golf course and at home and eventually here and down the stretch and then in major championships and win those bad boys.”

It also helped that Woods added two pieces of lead tape to his putter head.

“I hit my lines all day, saw my lines, which was nice,” he said.

He also moved one step closer to playing more consistently and putting together the kind of rounds we’ve grown accustomed to with Woods.

“I’ve come off of injuries before in the past, but it’s always been the same swing,” said Woods, who also avoided missing consecutive cuts for the first time in his career. “It’s pretty easy to come back to that. But when you’re implementing changes, it’s nice to have more competitive reps to fall back to because as of right now, I haven’t had that many competitive reps with Sean [Foley].

“I don’t like missing cuts, period. If I miss the cut, that means you can’t win the tournament on the weekend. I’ve got a shot at it this weekend.”

    Damn strait Tiger

  • Michael Dossett

Good round; go low this weekend! Can’t wait to watch – and can’t believe I’m saying that about a Fall Series event! ;)

  • Chris

Nice to see you getting your groove back.

  • Chris

Really glad to see you playing on the tour, you have been missed. Hope to see you play more.

  • Sherry

Good round Tiger. So glad to see you playing well. Keep that putter hot and dial in those drives and you’ll be unstoppable. :)

  • hicks

    GO GET EM TIGER!!!

  • patrick-spore

Hey TIGER ! Very glad you’re back though in the FALL Series BUT it’s ok man !I think you’re swinging better though I can’t say about your Putting. Show them man !I am back watching Golf Channel @ 4.30am Spore time.

  • Mel Garrison

Tiger glad your back this season but you need to drop sean and get back to your game with butch or hank. you would have multiple wins this year if it wasnt for sean and his changes hes attempting to make with your swing. i understand you need to protect your knee but i see alot of things in your swing that are causing your problems and there directly related to seans new changes!

  • Roberto Ortiz Garcia

So glad to see you playing well!!! Go Tiger:-)

  • Chris

I think that you need to find what works for you, and stick with it. Make minor adjustments, and stop trying to change your swing, because it really is messing with your game.

  • Jim Murphy

Seems like a few others have their groove as well. Tied for 40th after two rounds. Made a cut, that’s encouraging. Logging onto the site I thought he was tied for the lead or something.

  • MARCUS

Where are all the Tiger haters now? I guess those are the people that should shut the hell up because it seems they never have nothing nice to say. I wonder where that hatred stems from? I truly believe if Tiger Woods were white, All America would be happy to see him getting his groove back. It’s unfortunate. Tiger Woods is an American. Americans should support him because he’s American. -All the other countries do that to their own.
America needs to learn to support it’s own. Also, Tiger is the best hope we have if securing the world’s number 1 ranking again.
How could you not like Tiger? The only thing he’s guilty of is bringing more money and interest into a great sport! His personal problems are his business, none of mine nore yours. Get with the program!

  • Prof

Got his groove back was I watching the same tournament.

  • eddy

Brian Wacker leads with “Just like That”???? I can understand his need for a catchy heading, but anyone with any sense of the Game reads that and laughs, “Just like That”.

  • the truth

tiger your the real number one player on tour the rest are temps. who cares what people think start dating all those girls again keep enjoying life it goes around very quick good luck buddy

  • Ayyaz Sipra.

Tiger all you need is a 62 and a 63 on the weekend and you will have a W.If anyone can do it,you are the one who can!Believe in yourself and prove to the world that you are the best golfer of all times!Go,get em Tiger!

  • david

Good job making the cut, I really thought you were headed for the broadcast booth. Nick has got a seat for you next season. Have fun while it lasts.

  • Jim

    wheres lucy

  • david

I agree, Tiger would be the greatest in the broadast booth.

  • Ralph

Keep it going Tiger!! Prove the naysayers wrong.

  • eddy

@Jim, I was wondering what happened to Lucy also. C’Mon Lucy, we love you good long time, tell us about KARMA .

  • DonG

40th place after 2 rounds, you are really coming back. Give it up, you are washed up Tiger!

  • Christine Snyder

Great progress, Tiger, and I can’t wait for you to resume the trophy collection. Glad you’re back. I missed watching Tiger golf.

  • JJ

Give the guy a break…..He’s still fun to watch. All those not in favour of Tiger”GO FLY A KITE”

  • brian

It’s like you people are in a cult. Woods has played in 24 events the last 2 seasons and finished 20 of those events. Of those 20 events he has finished worse than 40th only 3 times. I know he can move up this weekend but thus far his performnace is only equal to what we have seen for 2 years from Woods. There is no discernable progress nor is there a decline, it’s simply average thus far. If Woods finishes top 20 but outside the top 10, that’s a nothing tournament. Nothing to celebrate but nothing to bemoan either.

  • FG

Keep it up, Tiger! If Tiger could push himself in top-5 into the final round, he would give himself a chance to win, hence regain his confidence and mojo. To play is to win; being in the second is nobody.

  • terry

Huh? Paul Casey found his groove, Ernie Els found his groove….Tiger scored -3 today. Perspective? Can we talk about the guys that are playing well please?

  • plywood

When he hits a “drive” 160 yards I’m not sure the he’s completely found his game. But, he hit some iron shots in tight and he putted fairly well. This round could have gone 2 shots either direction.

  • m d

Guys and Gals….Overnight not only did TIGER get his wayward putting under control but scored 6 birdies to boot!!!!WAY TO GO TIGER!!!

  • m d

By the by I apologize to EVERYONE who I offended by saying I thought that TIGER would miss the cut. Shows you how much I know. GO GET THEM TIGER!!!!

  • eddy

@brian, can you think of another celebrity other than Elvis or the Beatles or maybe Charlie Sheen in this case, that generates this sort of engagement from fans and foes? Look at every other article on this site? Noone cares that Casey just shot lights out in his second round back from injury? Or that old Ernie is putting together a run at the lead? What is it about TW that does this to people? If you’ve got the answer, copyright it, you’ll be a wealthy man.

  • robert

Good job on a nice round. Still need some improvement, but at least you gave yourself a shot. To all the haters, please give me one good reason for the hate! Before you answer, look in the mirror; look at all of our politicians; look at the majority of our actors, singers, athletes, etc… They are famous for making the same mistakes, yet they still hold their offices, sell out stadiums, and cinema’s. Just admit, you want to see him fail, because you can’t handle the fact that he is the greatest golfer of our time.

  • Chuckt

Think what you want…say what you want…love golf? Love the golfer?you are the man tiger

  • Jim

2 rounds down, 2 more to go. Didn’t this guy had a chance to win at the masters and lost all the steam?

Brian Wacker may have to recycle the same header tomorrow. “Just like that Tiger loses it again”.

No hater here, just keep in mind that all the profesional golfers always say that there are four round in a tournament, it’s still too early to call this a comeback. Even though it’s looking promising right now.

    Good for Tiger!

  • Jason

Good to see tiger make the cut for the sponsors and tournament but let’s get real for a change, let’s not report it like he is leading the tournament or likely to. Hopefully Paul will come thru after a tough year, now that is a feelgood story without any blondes involved, go Paul .

  • Kip

Nice and tidy summation Eddy. Enough said.

  • lucy

Don’t get too excited about your whore. He will go backward tomorrow like he always does.

  • eddy

Lucy, relative to par you may be correct, relative to time and future opportunities you are sadly mistaken.

  • brian

Well Eddy, I don’t dispute your point but my point is that his fans devotion is completely irrational. Of course he will have some good tournaments and he will win again. Maybe 5 more majors maybe zero majors only regular events. I think most of the people who either love or hate him must be very young. There are others who have excited their fans though, Babe Ruth certainly had that affect, Mohammed Ali, in 1988 Canadian parliament stopped to argue whether they could find a legal way to prevent Wayne Gretzky from being traded to LA, that devotion is a little insane. So yes, it does happen and Woods has earned it by his record but come on. At least wait until he’s actually won something again an try not to forget that he is 36 before the 2012 Masters is all I’m saying. 80% of all majors have been won by guys who are younger than Tiger is now.

  • FG

Many of us are not fair-weather fans. Love him or hate him, everyone love watching Tiger playing. Don’t expect he will have a good fairway hit; coz never will he able to drive well. That makes the game exciting and thrilling to watch how scrambles, shapes the shots. 14 majors, 81 PGA wins, don’t write him off just yet; plenty of golf left in him. All he needs is to play more tournaments. He knows his swing change doesn’t work well with Sean Foley; but this is more of issue with his ego. So, play more, keep competing in order to re-collect and re-compose himself.

  • FG

@Brian, judging from current performance of Tiger, i am not sure if he will ever pick up another major in time to come. Of course someone in the field will; some player who on some particular tournament when he will have is game just dialed in. But name me a player who you see has the ability or potential to play as consistently as Tiger and win few majors? None i guess. That is one of the reasons why we love Tiger; he makes the field look so ordinary.

  • Bob Loblaw

Well finally a ray of sunshine on the man for a change.
But really, start playing more golf if your that rusty Tiger.
Take all your money away and you`d be playing more tournaments.
Don`t make your return to the Tour in 2012 at Bay Hill ok.

  • eddy

@brian, as you are aware, “fan” is short for “fanatic”. Logic, knowledge and reason are often abandoned by irrational biased fanatics, replaced with a broad range of “opinions” let’s call them. Many of these comments we are seeing today are based largely on 1 friggin’ round of golf, a good round, not great, but it’s the only tangible tidbit people have to chew on. I hear ya, let’s let it play out and see what it is, then do a factual analysis and make informed statements, within contextual boundaries. I totally agree. Fanatics don’t operate like that, and that’s fine by me, to each their own.

  • FG

@eddy, well said! Time to bed. Let’s put on Tiger’s jammy and hit the sack.

  • DAC

He’s getting there. He will continue to improve and by end of day Sunday I predict top 10. Then off to Australia where he will continue to get back his confidence in everything. I cant wait for all of 2012 season as Tiger reclaims his #1 spot. Look at all the players (not taking anything away from them) that are getting so much credit for top 20 and top 1o finishes and because of that they are rated the top players in the world. Tiger will do at least that in almost every tournament he plays now that he’s healthy. He will still get criticized because he is always judged on his dominate past so its no big deal when he’s “only” in the top ten. It’s going to be a fun year!

    SCOTT where are you??? LOL

  • octopus

one small step for man (tiger)….. long way to go before he’s back in business.

  • 4 2 pins i'll dob u

wow tiger made a cut in the fall series so did about 70 others!

  • DAC

Sean Smith – Where are you? Another weak individual who cant admit when they are wrong. I guess we will all hear from you, Scott, Lucy and all the other haters the next time Tiger doesnt play perfect. You all are so funny!

  • seff

Well I was totally absorbed watching TW play Thurs and Fri. It was good that the TV coverage concentrated on him, because I really wanted to watch him make the cut. He now has two more competitive rounds to prepare for the Pres Cup.
HOWEVER, I would really like to see the rest of the field. It would be great to have the TV coverage show other players. We dont need to see every shot from TW on Sat and Sun unless he is up there with the leaders.

  • JD

Speak for your self Seff WE want to see every shot the Tige makes. Everyone else is boring.

  • andrew

After tiger shoots 5 under tomorrow morning lets see where the tiger haters go and hide.

  • eht

Time will tell if he has it togeather. Most of the big guns are not playing in this tournament so this is not the biggest test.I do’nt hate Tiger but I do get tired of him being shoved down my throat every day on or off the course and believe me he is not my favorite golfer to watch.I love the parade of young guns with the no fear attitude.

  • Fred

I meant the President’s Cup. I love to see Tiger play well in the Cup!

  • crystal

I agree with you self. Love to watch TW golf but also enjoy other golfers too. TGC needs to take some of the so called analysis out of the booth and put them out on the course. We spend to much time listening to them instead of watching golfers. Perhaps there mind set will change while they are standing out there in the heat, cold and the rain. So tired of there opinion, just want to watch golf!

  • Bernie

When the smoke clears, he will be the greatest golfer ever! Stay Healthy Tiger!

  • Mark

Please stop telling Tiger to go back to Butch or Hank! They split for a reason and I doubt anyone but them know the real reasons why!

  • Tiger's Orthopaedic Surgeon

I hope he doesn’t twist his knee while trying to pat himself on the back for making the cut.

  • MaxxMartin

Having barely made the cut, Tiger is line to end-up last among those who made the cut. I expect Tigger to be thowing a lot of clubs today. Great choice Fred!! Fred, you are a great golfer but your judgement sucks!

  • BW

Tiger finds his groove, makes the cut by 2 7 back of the leader still a bottom feeder. way to go.tigger.

  • whammo

tigerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, go home, read your old press releases, admit what a spoiled, selfish little boy you have been, total disregard for others, especially your wife, and stop talking like a foghorn about all your right moves, etc.
put your money where your mouth is!

  • fiber

Even if I’m among those who’d like to see the real Tiger back, the only one who wrote something worth to read in this blog is Tiger’s Orthopaedic Surgeon: nice job!

  • anna fleskes

    get going!! please win…

  • anna fleskes

    play really well!!

  • Scott

The only part of tiger’s game that looks good is his mid-irons. He is hitting those solidly. He still hit less than 50% of the fairways and he still doesn’t look comfortable in the tee box. He started the day six strokes off the lead and ended the day seven strokes off the lead. To suggest he is anything close to being back in form is laughable. I said tiger would shoot a 68 or 69 yesterday and guess what…he shot a 68. This is not a tough course to shoot a 68 on. The greens are not difficult, there are huge fairways and the rough isn’t rough.

  • bw

Bottom feeder tigger tees off on ho 10 to start the third round.

  • Nasdaq40

Win? You MUST be kidding! He’s LUCKY to make the cut! 64? He couldn’t shoot 64 with a half dozen mulligans!

  • 4 2 pins i'll dob u

what a wally tiger -1 through 4 a fluked 32ft putt no chance of this tournament

  • 4 2 pins i'll dob u

he’ll finish around 50th if his luck holds out

  • 4 2 pins i'll dob u

no more enhancers since 2008 when the pga substance abuse rules came in, perhaps he was a cheat

  • Patrick

My, my, look at all the Tiger worshippers going out in full force. Doesn’t take much to excite you fanboys, doesn’t it?

  • spike-ya-marker

tiger enters an easy tournament where rookies and lower quality golfers are fighting to keep there cards, can he finish in the top ten? no i doubt it. so how is he gonna win a big tournament?

  • Scott

it is telling when tiger is the 4th highest ranked golfer in the field.
