Tiger Woods discusses his third-round 68 at CordeValle.

SAN MARTIN, Calif. — Another round, another step closer to finding his form. That’ was Tiger Woods’ assessment after a second straight 68 Saturday that has Woods at 4 under with one round to go in the Frys.com Open.
“I would like to just keep building on it,” said Woods, who has made 11 birdies the last two rounds. “I’m definitely doing that. I wasn’t that far away from really turning it to the back nine and taking it deep. I think this golf course can be had today.”
At one point, Woods moved to within just three of the lead after back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 (his 10th and 11th holes of the day). He bogeyed the par-3 third, where he left a bunker shot in the sand for a second time this week, and the par-4 seventh before adding a birdie on the par-5 ninth to close out his round.
Woods also putted well for the second straight day as he seemed to figure out the speed of the greens. He missed just one putt from inside 10 feet and gained 1.370 strokes putting on the field.
He also seemed more comfortable over his iron shots, hitting 14 greens for a second day in a row.
“Absolutely it’s gotten better,” Woods said.
And even when he was off, Woods said he was able to adjust mid-round.
“If it does creep in,” Woods said of his old swing. “I’m able to fix it. That’s the great thing. I hit it well all day except for a couple of straight ones here and there. But I know what the fixes are.
”It’s getting better. I’m improving day by day, which is good.”

…Very exiting to see Woods back in the game and showing signs of contention. I probably speak for a lot of people when I say that we have been waiting for this since the Masters this year. With Els in the lead, it seems like the good old days…not to mention the bunched up leaderboard which will make for one of the best final rounds of the year…who knew it would be at this event!

Rafael – how is he showing signs of contention? He put together two decent rounds but he is still a minimum of 7 strokes off the lead. He has failed to gain any ground on the leaders in two days.

He should play every week left of the season now he is fully fit, Donald has played four consecutive weeks at no.1 in the world, there’s no reason why he can’t play three or four of these smaller events and get back into tournament golf. Let his ego take a hit and get into the swing of things again. These sort of events are what started his pro career in 96.

Professional PGA TOUR players are “Below Average” in your opinion??? Hmmm .. if they are below average, as you probably are yourself…why are YOU not on the PGA TOUR?
Any sportsman you see on TV whatever the sport; Golf, Football, Basketball, Baseball, it doesn’t matter, if they are on TV they are excellent at what they do. PERIOD. NO ONE on TV playing golf is below average as you call them, they’re not even average, all are ABOVE average.

I get your point though, however, Tiger has been struggling with his game since long before the Chevron, which by the way, I’m sure you’re aware yourself, is an exhibition tournament with no more than 20 played invited by Tiger himself participating. Even if Tiger won it, it proves nothing.
Tiger Woods is finished he is hitting far too many destructive shots as you saw today from 170 yards on the Par 3 7th hole using a 7-iron for goodness sake. I can’t remember the last time I hit a 7-iron 40 yards off line like Woods did here. It’s wrong that Tiger got the Captains pick for the Presidents Cup, he is a free win for whoever he plays in the Rest Of The World Team.
And good riddance to Tiger losing his game. He is rude and obnoxious. He is arrogant and disrespectful to Reporters and his fellow Peers. He never gives people credit when they beat him like Rich Beem in 2002, Y.E Yang in 2009 and of course Charl Schwartzel in 2011 at The Masters.

@ Jim … yes you are right, and you’re a Tiger Woods follower aren’t you??? Well, I never see Tiger Woods respecting his fellow peers or golf etiquette at all with his continued spitting, swearing and slamming of clubs. The guy is a jerk who is not likeable at all. I respect what Tiger Woods has achieved in the game of golf, but I will never respect Tiger Woods as a human being.
It wouldn’t hurt Woods to smile more on the course, to cut down on his cursing and spitting and to actually give the guys who beat him on the week credit. No one is unbeatable, you cant always play your best, Tiger needs to realize this and show more respect.
What an outrage! I am watching the so called golf (when tiger plays anyway) from sunny England and it runs from 9pm here til 1am just because Tiger is playing they put it on 1 hour earlier than previously scheduled… Now Friday because Tiger obviously plays in the morning, and WILL MISS THE CUT … the coverage starts at 10:30pm my time Friday. Well even though I see 1 and a half hours less I really see more because The Golf Channel have shown nothing but Tiger Woods and analyzations of his swing. At least I will see some of the many other players out here busting a gut to make a living. Tiger IS NOT the only player out there. Who else would be shown at 3 Over Par? No ONE! It’s wrong!

@ zek .. are you seeing Tiger Woods playing different golf to what I am seeing? Just wondering. Because he is struggling so much this website feels the need to make out an average score of 68 when the course was there to be had today.. 66s, 65s, 64s and even 2 62s that weren’t even mentioned on air were being shot. Did you not see the drive on 2 50 yards from the middle of the fairway, or the 7-iron 40 yards left from 170 yards on the par 3 7th hole??? These are shots of a 15 handicapper. He is absolutely no where near winning a tournament right now.

Tiger Woods is LIGHT YEARS from a Top 10 placing right now nevermind a Victory. The guy is in denial. He keeps saying he’s playing 36, 45 holes a day, whats that like 8 hours of golf a day???? Yet he is STILL hitting drives 50 yards off line, missing greens with wedges and leaving balls in bunkers from the sand.
The guy has never been honest. A few years ago when he was hitting 5/14 fairways a round, he kept saying he’s driving the ball well. He needs to open up and be honest. I know he hits the ball far which narrows the fairways but if he’s driving it well, for his length, 9/14 fairways or higher is good, not the 5/14, 6/14 he’s having this week…
I believe Woods won’t fire a low score tomorrow as you Tiger Woods worshippers for some reason believe … he will fire a rubbish round of 69 hitting no more than 7 fairways and 12 greens. He is just an average Touring Pro right now…

It’s high time the public let up on Tiger Woods. After all he has hurt no one but himself and his family and that is his business. He is a professional athlete and as such has given all of us many years of great golf.His style of play and consistency over ten years was/is unmatched and all of golf including the PGA Tour would not be as it is were it not for Tiger. So get off his back. Lucy before you call someone a pig you should take a look in the mirror. Had he slept with all black women you people would not have given a good you know what. If Elin was black it would not have made the news…So get a life. Elin got millions and was taken from obscurity to being world reknowned..for having two children for Tiger.Have you heard of her recently? And those of you who continue to predict that Tiger will not win again will really look stupid when he does. But then of course you all know better than Jack Nicklaus. Sean Smith sounds very young. Tiger has played this kind of golf before, and these same things have been said about him before. Sean Smith seems like one of those “doi” people who are all about the “what have you done for me lately.” Someone (except Tiger) wins two tournaments in a row, they are the best in the world. Tiger doesn’t win two in a row, he is in a slump. The standards for Tiger have always been and always will be different. Accepting that, there is absolutely no conclusive evidence that Tiger will not return to a dominant form. Will it be more or less dominant than past dominance? Who knows. However, there is no reason to say he can’t, Sean Smith. If you have any factual evidence or extremely strong circumstantial evidence, I am sure we would be happy to listen to it.

Sean Smith, I don’t know what few years ago he was hitting so few fairways and saying he was driving it well. If you are refering to 2009, when he won 6 times, he was hitting 64.29% in the fairway, ranked 86th. Tiger has won more in years where he has hit less fairways. And how many other people came close to winning 6 tournaments, 7 worldwide hitting it that badly, Sean? Truth was, he wasn’t hitting it badly, you have to be an idiot to say someone can’t drive the ball yet dominate the TOUR. You are making yourself look foolish
@ dman … i am watched and played golf since I was 5 years of age. I cannot let my love of the game just disappear. You say “if I dont like Tiger than dont watch him play, or listen to his interviews”??? … How on earth can I not watch him when it’s ALL THE GOLF CHANNEL SHOWS. Its an absolute joke the guy is middle of the pack with not even an outside chance of winning. They show precisely too much of Tiger from walking for 150 yards, to eating an energy bar… to swing analysations after every single shot. Please explain dman how I can watch PGA Tour coverage with Tiger Woods in the field, without seeing him? They will probably show him pick his nose or throw a tee into a bush.

@ Aaron Smith, you don’t have to be a great driver of the ball nowadays because the ball is going so far. 300 yards and wayward leaving a wedge into a 430 yard par 4 is a whole lot better than 260 yards and wayward leaving a 6 or 7 iron. It’s all about power nowadays. And I get your point that he was 86th in accuracy in 2009, I saw that statistic today, but I’m referring to the odd drive Tiger hit in 2009 that literally hits the fairway on another hole 70 yards off line.

@ Reg … I’m glad you mentioned race when you said if Elin Nordgren was black everything would be fine because that is absolute rubbish. The very fact that Tiger Woods is a black man and he slept with alot of women while married, well he got a pat on the back because alot of black men do the same. If you see most of my comments it is a hatred for Tiger Woods as a human being, not for the many great things he’s achieved in the game of golf. I am a golfing fan and have been for a long time and i respect what Tiger achieved on the course. I just don’t like the guy as a person, and never have, even before this thing with him being unfaithful to his wife. Because he always was arrogant, rude, disrespectful, spat on the course, cursed and slammed clubs.

@ Reg .. When i see other touring pros yell curse words or slam a club or show any kind of anger whatsoever, the announcers say that’s a shame, if Tiger does the same, they turn a blind eye.
@ David .. I agree Tiger’s game is heading that way, but I’m not sure Tiger is great for TV as his interviews down the years have been pre-scripted. The only player in history to have this. He’s that big headed. He’s rude and would be fired by the golf channel after one broadcast.

@ Reg I am a 4 handicapper and 22 years old I don’t expect to turn pro and I am not running down Tiger’s game really. I respect what he’s achieved in the game, just saying as a human being Tiger Woods is bottom of the world.
I wish I was an 8/9 handicapper. Putting is the strength of my game. Get me inside 10 feet and seems I make more than I miss. iron play is okay I guess but it’s the driving that lets me down. I don’t hit the ball that far and can be very wayward at times =( I play off about 12 and hoping to get to single figures I believe it’s possible just need to hit the ball straighter =(

Come on Sean, what other golfer gets the scrutiny that Tiger does? He get’s more attention tht the entire field. Why? Because no one has been able to produce the excitement in golf that he has. Anything can happen when Woods is on the course so the camera is afraid ot leave him for fear of missing another great shot. The man can do things with a golf ball tht no one else can? Sure he is in a terrible slump now but if you’ve watched him over the years you have to appreate the talent. And it has not gone any where. With all that ou have said and Tiger has done have you seen the gallery following him this week compared to that following other golfers? Fact is people pay to see the best and like it or not in our era he is still the best…. 14 majors and 73 other wins say so. Also most of the young glfers out there today have swings built on Tiger’s original swing.. and he is still being copied. Golf courses were Tigerized to slow him down. It has not been easy for Tiger as so many seem to think. He gave us his best on the field. What more should we ask of him? It’s time to give it a rest and let’s enjoy the game.

The funny thing is all of you people call Tigers game awful or mediocre but, were is your game what is your handicap? Most of you guys don’t even have a ghin card or even know what that is. You say its a week field because everyone a higher world ranking than #20 all golfers start somewhere and they are Professionals. Most people on here like to say things about Tiger because of there drama I have a 1.3 handicap and have played in multiple tournaments shooting plenty of rounds at 66 but that doesn’t mean i am a PGA tour caliper player. Sean, I am over sixty and still play a pretty good round of golf.. I was for a bit a touring professional and then a teaching professional with clients from many different countries. So I guess I see the game from a little different perspective. I also ran a very successful pro-am for many years and became familiar with a number of professional golfers. You would be shocked at how many of them are probably worse that you can ever imagine Tiger being. However they do not attract the press Tiger does. So you really don’t know because these guys are not saleable. Tiger, fortunately or unfortunately as the case might be is highly marketable..even now. So he gets camera time! Just look at what rolex said when signing him recently. There is the difference.. Those sponsors who dropped Tiger had a good ride on his name and made millions. You say you respect his game but not him beacuse of what he did off the course. But Tiger never asked anyone to emulate him or to see him as a role model. And frankly in another world some of the things said in these pages are close to slander and libel.. against someone you don’t even know..and who has done you nothing and what’s worse cannot respond to these attacks. Like Lucy calling him a pig. And all this because he cheated on his wife…oh but look what he did to his children you say….. reminds me of the song the says..”you say you love the baby, then you crucify the man” Croce I think… Sean… as a golfer you should be focusing on the man’s game. Perhaps if you look a little closer you’ll find in his game something to help yours…. you probably have already…. so leave the fellows personal life alone…..another song admonishes us to “never interfare with man and wife because you never understand..just give your sympathy… good advice I think. Sabbatini (missed cut)in the top 30 of the money list at the start of the tournament. played on an average course. tiger is only playing an average game at present and will be a very long time getting back to something near his best, thats if he doesnt give it up and become the most annoying tv commentator of all time!

Tiger was a phenomenon in golf and what he did for ten years will always be special. But I think it is interesting how his current form is starting to remind me of David Duvall, a great player and number one in the world who completely lost his game. Some great players never come back – and more and more people will start to wonder if tiger ever will.
But because most of us like a Cinderella story, it is interesting to see if he’ll ever win again. And today I feel really sorry for David Duvall. Maybe I will in time feel sorry for Tiger…

I wouldn’t compare Woods to Duval. For one thing Duval couldn’t make a cut, Woods is middle of the pack but usually makes the cut. Duval lost his game when he was only about 30 Woods was quite a bit older in sports terms, 34 which places him toward the end of the typical golfers prime. Next year he’ll be 36 and if he can never find his game, it’ll be understandable. He’s getting older and his knee is ruined.
One thing puzzles me about Woods fans. He is currently in 38th place and nine strokes off the lead. What are you looking at that leads you to conclude this performance is better than any of his other tournaments the last 2 years? There is zero evidence thast he is improving. His first event back after his scandal remains one of his very best results.
Please tell me Tiger is playing in the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Orlando (Thursday Oct 20 – Sunday Oct 23, 2011) because this 30th place showing at the Frys clearly shows he needs more competitive tournament rounds.

TW had a very good 2009. It then fell apart for his – his own doing. It takes time to recover from a divorce, even more so when kids are involved.
Don’t think he has the heart in it anymore. Don’t blame him. Better to try and be a good dad, make up for past mistakes.

Tiger will not win another major and likely will never win another tournament. He’s done. Too much of his own troubles and too many great, young players (and old) for him to compete with.
@brian, the decision makers in Golf are clearly of the opinion that the previous 2 yrs. of tumult are behind TW, the new base point for discussion and analysis will simply be moved forward to this week. As time goes on and TW “exposes himself” in tournament play, his results will be scrutinized, as always, but it is blatantly obvious to everyone on Earth that all the people who actually have a say in the Game are on record in favour of TW being afforded every opportunity going forward to compete on Tour. That’s just what it is. Fans and Foes will continue to offer opinions, Finchem and crew LOVE this stuff, it’s GOLD, and they don’t even have to do anything to earn it, we’re doing it for them. This is a week for the average PGA Golfers to show their stuff. Woods NEVER played in this Tournament before but he needs the Reps…..
At the present time he is in the middle of the field for the final day. I would say that he is playing within in game which at the present time ranks 50+ on the OWGR list.
The real test will come next year when the PGA Tours kicks into full gear and he has to play against the Top Golfers on Tour. Until then let him do his Reps wherever he can.

Falls series presents a good env to come back fromj injury recovery, rust, new swing in tournaments…and not be risking losing points in a big tournaments…its perfect reps for the off season…based on progress in just this tournament…he should play another and keep the momentum going instead of waiting for Aus Masters…6 weeks out…he needs to play tournaments…these events are perfect because they don’t matter to him

tiger has played his best this tournament. he has had a long break he’s played fresh and has found it hard to compete in a sub standard field. open your eyes, the genius talent is locked away in his head, he’s finished! especially as his body is knackered. changing his swing is he? too old and crippled to keep the most perfect swing he once had. all he can do is learn to be humble, i think thats all folks
