Baird a bridesmaid again

By Brian Wacker, PGATOUR.COM

SAN MARTIN, Calif. — As far as losses go, this one will actually be a little easier for Briny Baird to swallow, even if he’s now gone 348 starts without a victory.

“I finished second before four times, and only one of those four times did I really honestly think I had a chance to win,” said Baird, who lost to Bryce Molder on the sixth playoff hole at the Frys.com Open.  “The other times they weren’t back door seconds, but I didn’t feel like I was out there to win the tournament.

“Today I felt like I was out there to win the tournament.”

He certainly had his chances — again. On the fourth extra hole was Baird’s best chance; he had a 7 1/2 -footer for the win but missed it.

But to Baird’s point, he also hit some big shots Sunday when he needed them most — a birdie on the 15th and a pitch-in eagle on the 17th during regulation, not to mention three birdies during the playoff.

“For me that’s a big deal,” Baird said. “There’s a hurdle that I overcame today that I’m not scared to talk about it.

“If I knew [how to win], you know, I would have — I probably would have won. You know, because you keep doing this, that’s knocking on the door. A lot of other times, you know, you finish second, you finish third, you finish fourth, you’re not really knocking on the door. You’re just shooting a good Sunday round when you were in 25th place. This was good.”

Great positive attitude. Maybe next week; who knows?

  • drbcool

That’s a class act. Maybe this will free him up a little.

  • eddy

Solid Sunday 67, he’s gonna remember the 17th at CordeValle for a long time, both he and Molder were making incredible shots, making a 290 yd. par 3 out of it. Very candid comments, I hope he gets one someday.

Briny Baird appears to be a very pleasant
person BUT (348) PGA TOUR EVENTS clearly
shows that is a NON WINNER. I hope I am
wrong and wish him all the best for the
    remainder of his golfing career.

  • DAC

And you are “clearly” a loser “A from A” !!!!

  • wazza

Congratulations to Bryce – sad for Briny – who cares about Tiger – Bryce see you in Kapalua early next year

  • Al from Australia

Dac : Clearly shows that you should not
be on the site as you know ZIP ALL about
golf. Stats dont lie and Briany Baird’s
stats are self explanatory. It clearly
shows that you are loser in this case !!
Enjoy your golf and make relevant remarks
    in future.

  • wazza

Al from Australia – relevant points although given Brinys performance this week it is a great result for him

  • John Hawk

Any PGA Tour player with 13Mil in earnings is a veritable winner…’nuff said!

  • mac franks

John Hawk has a very good point. This was a very good showing for Briny. Well done.

  • DAC

A FROM A – And just how much money have you made this year or in your career? I would say he has made a great living and is a winner! You sound like an idiot making such statemants!

  • M Jonker

WELL DONE BRINY!!! WELL DONE MOLDER!! Golf tournament victories and losses are determined by hair breadth quarter inch missed putts!! You guys have the hardest jobs in the world! We as fans should realize and respect that more and more! Golf won on Sunday @ Frys, excellent entertainment and great sportsmanship! Winning is not everything, hundreds of NFLers have not won the Super Bowl over years, and yet they have left a legacy! Briny your sportsmanship and calm and gentleman like attitude over the years on the golf tours has left a great legacy! And to aL from Australia………take it easy mate, and go tend to your sheep! Peace to all.

I still remember Paul Azinger said “this is not end of the world” twice. They were after ’87 The Open Championhip(it was cold) and ’88 PGA Championship. Then he beat cancer by himself and finally won PGA Championship in ’93.
Jack Renner won at Hawaii in ’84,after shocking turnover loss to Aoki in previous year.
Longtime known Payne Stewart’favourits word was “the game is not over until it’s over”. There will be a plenty of expectation of win to Briny.

  • frank

Briny seems like a nice guy, but I don’t think he is ever going to win. Not trying to be disrespectful, but everytime he has a chance to win, he is unable to finish it off. For whatever reason he is always in the first group off to start one of the 1st 2 rounds and he doesn’t have the killer instinct to finish off a tournament.

I do hope that I am wrong and he goes out and wins 10 times but I just don’t see him ever winning.

  • Gord

great playing Briny, keep playing like this and your day will come- got the worst break you could get when your shot hit the flag and ended up 12′ away, miss the flag and you are at worst 4-5′

  • Todd

I was really hoping he would pull it off. This is a good sign though and with the amount of money he has earned in his career he has nothing to be ashamed of and I would definitely not say he is a loser. Too many times that seems to be the only standard as to whether someone has had a good career or not. I would love to be a pro golfer and be able to claim that much prize money and a consistent top ten player. I would certainly consider that a success.

  • Howard Brizendine

From today’s San Francisco Chronicle: “There was some question about whether Baird might have violated the rules by tapping down a spike mark on the first playoff hole, but tour officials decided nothing inappropriate had occurred.” How can you decide that tapping down a spike mark is not inappropriate?

Actually, when I saw it happen was on the last playoff hole, and Molder made the putt to win after he appeared to tap down something on the green directly in front of the hole.

  • Larry

Briny said on Saturday that winning was no big deal. Really?

  • frank

all i have say is ,you guys are retarded, you hardly mention baird in one of the most exciting playoffs in years, instead its tiger, tiger, tiger….we’re sick of that fool….the pga had many great players before him ,and during the palmer nicklos years that got hardly a mention………….stop with this hero worship crap……

  • Patrick S.

I was at the playoff yesterday, and let me tell you guys, that was the most exciting tournament I have ever seen. Briny’s going to learn from this and I know that this is gonna help him become an even better player than he already is. He’s gonna win. Bryce played outstanding as well. Bogey free his final 2 rounds. That’s rather impressive. If you’re gonna talk about briny not winning then talk about Tiger not winning the last 2 years. Is his career over?? Of course not. Both Briny and Tiger will get victories in the near future. That is a guarantee.

  • Briny

Tiger WHO? Can we not go one thread without mentioning that HAS BEEN?

  • G T P

    Nicklos? Get lost Frank

  • tiger

whatever briny or shall i call you michael your real name ? how many wins do you have ? oh yeah none . how many do i have 71 exactly. maybe if you played golf with your collar down you might start to win . you look like a fool

  • tiger

frank how do you spell jack’s last name again ?

  • JimB

I took my first golf lesson from Briny’s grandfather at the Muni Course in Galveston, Texas. His dad, Butch, went to the same high school I did. He may not have finished first, but he’s always been a winner in my book.
