The Reno-Tahoe Open will use the Modified Stableford scoring system at next year’s event, scheduled the week of July 30th.
The Modified Stableford system hasn’t been used on the PGA TOUR since 2006 at The International. The system awards points per hole based on the number of strokes taken – an eagle, for instance, is worth five points; a birdie is worth two points. Points are deducted for bogeys (minus 1) and double bogeys (minus 2).
Now it’s your turn. What do you think of the switch to the Modified Stableford system?
I think its a great idea, I used to love following the tournament in Colorado when they used this format.
Its exciting and gives the players a change up during the long season.
Great move by the tour IMO.
I like it. I like the agressive play and find it more exciting to watch. I understand that most tounaments will and should stay traditional, but it would be fun to see a few weeks of this system.
I was sad to see it leave the tour several years ago… LOVE to see it coming back. And I’ll second the it’s not for every tournament but it’s a great addition. Kinda like adding a little spice to normal. With so many stroke play events, having a few little mixer uppers like the Accenture Match Play and now a Modified Stableford will spice the season up a little!
The only reaaly bad part about this is that it’s at an ‘alternative’ event counter the Bridgestone Invitational so we won’t really see any of the headlines going after it… :-(
Congratulations on making an interesting game.
Conformity stiffles imagination and creativity.
I endorse the change to the Stableford System.
“gunners” will enjoy it and others will have a reason to keep playing hard.
I’m definitely glad to see this format come back. My friends and I play this format every once in awhile
I have to admit, I was very disappointed when the PGA TOUR got rid of this format in the International that was held in the State of Colorado. To me, it was exciting. The tournament that sticks with me most, The International I mean, was the year Rich Beem won it. The reason I say this is because I believe Steve Lowery was runner up and on the final day Lowery had a 3 hole stretch that went something like Eagle on a par 4, Birdie on a Par 3 I think then an unbelievable Albatross on the Par 5 to make it a grand stand finish. You will never see a 3 hole stretch like Lowery had ever again probably.
Like someone above said though, it’s a little disappointing it’s the Reno Tahoe Tournament thats held opposite the Money Spinner Tournament the Bridgestone Invitational but I will still follow it with good interest. Hope the PGA TOUR bring this format into a maximum of 3 tournaments, that sounds good, no more than 3 though, need to play most the traditional way.
LLLLLLLLUUUUUUKKKKKKKKEEEEEEE!
DESERVED WORLD NUMBER 1. FANTASTIC WIN LAST WEEK WHEN HE NEEDED TO FINISH NO WORSE THAN A T-2. 6 BIRDIES IN A ROW ON THE FINAL BACK 9, 10 IN THE FINAL ROUND TOTAL. IT ISN’T EVEN A QUESTION ANY MORE. WHO IS THE PLAYER OF THE YEAR? WHY IT’S LUKE DONALD OF COURSE. 14 TOP 10S INCLUDING 2 WINS AND TOP 10S IN MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIPS AND TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP (WEBB SIMPSON HAD 0 IN MAJORS AND IN PLAYERS AND TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP). AND THATS JUST HIS SUCCESS ON THE US PGA TOUR. HIS SUCCESS ON THE EUROPEAN TOUR ISN’T TOO SHABBY EITHER.. LOCKED IN TO WIN THE MONEY LIST THERE TOO AND; 12 TOP 10S INCLUDING WINS. THE ONLY STRANGE THING ABOUT LUKE DONALD’S SEASON WAS HIS VERY FIRST TOURNAMENT IN RIVIERA WHEN HE SHOT A 2ND ROUND 79 AND MISSED THE CUT BY LIKE 10 SHOTS. BUT SINCE THEN HE HAS GONE ON A TEAR. 26 TOP 10S WORLDWIDE. IF TIGER WOODS DID THIS IT WOULD BE MENTIONED EVERYWHERE BUT BECAUSE QUIET MILD MANNERED ENGLISHMAN LUKE DONALD DOES IT, IT HARDLY GETS A MENTION. WEBB SIMPSON HAD A GREAT SEASON WITH 2 WINS AND 2 PLAY OFF LOSSES (OUT OF 3 PLAYERS) BUT HE DIDNT GET TOP 10 IN THE MAJORS OR PLAYERS OR TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP, LUKE DID.
IT SHOULD BE UNANIMOUS. LUKE DONALD SHOULD BE AND DESERVES TO BE PLAYER OF THE YEAR. HE DID AFTERALL CREATE HISTORY BY BECOMING THE FIRST EVER PLAYER TO WIN BOTH THE EUROPEAN AND PGA TOUR MONEY LIST IN THE SAME SEASON!
LLLLLLLLUUUUUUUUUUKKKKKKKEEEEEEEE!!!
I WAS AT THE RYDER CUP IN WALES 2010 AND WATCHED LUKE’S GAME UP CLOSE, SOLID AS A ROCK.
Love the new scoring system…I would like to see even more alternative scoring formats at a few tournaments. Would like to see a team format too.
“The Stableford system was developed more than 100 years ago to deter golfers from giving up after playing only one or two bad holes, a common occurrence during tournament play.” Very interesting. I didn’t know that.
to me its idiotic unfair system, lets see example of score 2 under, which is 70 strokes , in reno tahoe
one player shoots 10 birdes and 8 bogeys = 10×2 points – 8 x(-1 points) = 12 points, on the other hand we have flawless bogey free round of 16 pars and 2 birdies and players gets 4 points , normally players would be next to each other and i would rate better round of bogey free , – golf is a game of fewer mistakes , and in reno tahoe these 8 points its miles between them ,
they should do the ausssie stablford set up 1 point for bogey 2 points par 3 points birdie 4 points eagle 5 points double eagle but i think if they want to spice it up they should give the eagles and double eagles bonus points and maybe award round of the day if souly won a bonus
Seeean Smith – You need to get over your Tiger hatred. Tiger HAS won the money title on the US Tour and European Tour..FIVE TIMES. How much coverage did he get for it? Considering you don’t even know about it, I’d say not much. So, it was unofficial because Tiger didn’t “sign up” to be a European Tour player, but if he had, he would have won both money lists 5 times because they count the majors and the wgc events which tiger has owned, as well as the players championships – Also, back then you only needed to play 12 events to be eligible for European Tour membership, which they raised to 14 two years ago I believe. Either way, Tiger has done it. Tiger has won more money lists than any player in history. He has won more player of the year awards than anyone in history. He has won more vardon trophies than anyone in history. He won three straight junior amatures, 3 straight US amatures, 4 straight majors, has the record for lowest scoring average, record for lowest adjusted scoring average (which is the most accurate), owns the consecutive cuts made record, got to 2nd on the all time major wins list by 32, and third on the all time wins list by 33. He holds the scoring record in three of the four majors (held four of four until the Rory chip-and-putt PR even..err, I mean the US Open that had the lowest scoring average for a US Open in history, and the lowest scoring average for any major in more than 25 years – so if you want to count it, go ahead). He did all of that in 13 years. Nobody has ever won the % of tournaments he has won, the percentage of majors he has won, or even come close. Nobody has ever even had a stretch of 13 years, even if you pick their best 13 years, where their winning percentages would beat his. Basically, he was more dominant than anyone has ever been. Is 13 years not enough to proove that it wasn’t just a “hot streak.” LOL. Sean, take a pill, chill, and get off the hate. It takes too much energy. So does the latent jealousy you have as well. Give Tiger his due man.
As for the stableford system, one time a year is perfect. The players like it, but just once a year…sort of like the TOUR likes the match play..but just once a year because they dont like a chance of having a Sunday with no big names. The other reason is that in the stableford system and the match play system, the best player does not always win, just like mlynarski’s comment above. Therefore, the better players don’t really like tehse tournaments, but considering this is supposed to be entertainment, they can tolerate a couple different formats a couple weeks a year. If you want to see other weird odd formats, watch the Wendys Shootout or the Shark Challenge or the Skins Game (or did they get rid of that) in the silly season.
