Fredrik Jacobson will not be able to play in next week’s Franklin Templeton Shootout due to a thumb injury.
He will be replaced by Scott McCarron, who will play with tournament host Greg Norman for the second time. McCarron is trying to become the first player to win the Franklin Templeton Shootout four times.
McCarron won in 1997 with Bruce Lietzke and then captured back-to-back titles with Brad Faxon in 2000 and 2001. McCarron and Norman played together in 2004 and tied for fourth.
McCarron has not played in the Franklin Templeton Shootout since 2008. The three-day competition — which features modified-alternate shot, best-ball and scramble formats — begins on Dec. 9 and will be broadcast on the Golf Channel and NBC.
any world ranking points for this fiasco?
no….No World Ranking points for this event
McCarron is an idiot. He criticized Mickelson for using square grooves while McCarron brandishes a long handled putter. Talk about cheating.
Oh no Nick, did he hurt the little Lefty fanboy’s feelings?
What is it like up Mickelson’s behind? Warm? Moist? Tight? All of the above?
@Nick, I totally agree with you. Phil exercised a loophole, which until proven otherwise is totally legal. Scott is doing the same thing as Phil was, until Long-Putters are banned he’s exercising his advantage through a loophole.
Norman is a tool. Who will be the next skank to take him to the cleaners?
Justin,
You are half right. Half dead wrong.
Phil exercised a loophole to demonstrate how dangerous it was for tournament golf and I applaud him for it. It was not cheating in any way and Scott McCarron was a fool to criticize him.
On the matter of long putters, first of all let me state that I don’t like them at all and I would like to see something done about it as I think it hurts the game for many reasons. But let’s be specific…it is the anchoring of the club to the body that is a problem, not the actual length of the putter. The rule change that would be proposed is not an equipment restriction but merely a new criteria for what constitutes a stroke.
If Adam Scott wants to hold the thing out in front of him or a 7 foot giant qualifies for the PGA Tour, there should be nothing keeping them from using a longer than “standard” putter. Just keep the butt end away from your chest.
In the meantime, there is absolutely nothing even remotely illegal about using a putter in this manner…no loophole whatsoever.
I turned Pro and played Can. and mini tours during a trip to Europe in 1986 to play the minors saw Sam Torrence and Peter Senior wielding those thing. Big hoo hah then about it but us there at that time heard that big shot members at the R&A and USGA who were awful putters were loving their new lot in golf by using…guess what? Should have been restricted to Sr. tours only was our majority opinion at the time. So live with it it’s to late now. dirt
Good point dirt. We may very well have to live with it but I don’t think that means we should keep quiet about it and accept it. Square grooves, side saddle putting and many other equipment and rule changes have been implemented long after people were using them so why not this?
I think Fredrik Jacobson’s playing in the big European event in Dubai that starts Wednesday. Probably more interested in the kudos and dollars there than in an end-of-year joke like the shark’s shootout. And rightly so!
maybe for the pros the anchoring could be revised, but please don’t fool around with us that are really enjoying the game with out long putter anchored to our chests. For me , it has made golf just a whole lot more enjoyable.
Thumb injury, yet is in the field for Dubai?
