Ready for Miller-Faldo TV pairing?

Live Report Image
Johnny Miller (left) and Nick Faldo will be in the booth together at Kapalua.

Johnny Miller and Sir Nick Faldo, who share eight major championship titles and are the two pre-eminent names in golf television today, will work an entire tournament together as co-analysts for the first time at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, Jan. 6-9, the PGA TOUR’s 2012 season kick off exclusively on Golf Channel.

The Hyundai Tournament of Champions — which will finish on a Monday night in primetime for the first time — will be the first of three consecutive tournaments covered exclusively by Golf Channel to begin the year (Sony Open in Hawaii, Jan. 12-15; Humana Challenge in Partnership with the Clinton Foundation, Jan. 19-22). The Sony Open also will air in primetime from Hawaii.

Miller: “It’s great repartee when Nick and I are together. It’s kind of an older brother-younger brother dynamic. We’re not afraid to challenge each other.”

Faldo: "I was really looking forward to a stress-free start to the new season. Now this news. Oh well, never mind. At least I’ve got two weeks in Hawaii watching the PGA TOUR, and let’s just say some lively debate. Should be fun."

Will this collaboration be a sign of things to come? Golf Channel president Mike McCarley told USA Today that “we’ll see how it works, what kind of hijinks ensue . . We’ll have to check if it’s safe to release these two into the wild."

McCarley added that Miller, “like any great analyst, lacks a filter between his brain and mouth so you never know what will come out  — but you know it will be interesting."

Miller, a veteran of NBC Sports’ golf coverage since 1990, and Faldo, lead analyst for PGA TOUR coverage on Golf Channel and CBS since 2007, will join Golf Channel on NBC play-by-play commentator Dan Hicks in the booth for all four days of 2012’s inaugural tournament.

Golf Channel’s exclusive coverage will begin Thursday, Jan. 5, with a special two-hour edition of Golf Central from Maui, Hawaii, which will preview the Hyundai Tournament of Champions with player interviews, and participation from Golf Channel and Golf Channel on NBC personalities, including Miller and Faldo.

Golf Channel’s coverage of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions will include 17-1/2 live hours from Hawaii — with the majority in prime time (see schedule below).

Joining Hicks, Miller and Faldo for the telecast will be Terry Gannon, Frank Nobilo, Mark Rolfing, Jerry Foltz, Curt Byrum and Kelly Tilghman.

Are you looking forward to hearing Miller and Faldo together? Let us know.

Does “Foldo” ever take the high road? every time he has anything to do with Miller, he makes a snide comment. Now Miller is no gem, but Nick lowers himself with the comments EVERY time. Sounds an awful lot like “Monty,” who acts like a wimp in these situations as well. Best comment ever when Faldo didn’t show up on time for a tournament. They said he was detained because he was “attending the birth of his future wife.” Priceless….

  • Scott

How did I enjoy golf before this pairing?

  • Mike Ford

I can’t stand Johnny Miller. I hope Nick Faldo puts him in his place and can shut him up.

  • Larry

Will Dan Hicks be allowed to speak?
I hope they expand the booth to fit both there heads in. (Cosell and Dandy Don, Mike and The Mad Dog AKA “A and Hole”)No place in golf for oil and water.

  • carla

    WORST COMMENTATOR 2011.

    Johnny Miller (no contest).

  • Larry

Another thing about this. While I am no great fan of either as an announcer, This line about them “sharing 8 Major title’s is a bit much.
Faldo has 6 Miller has 2 (coincidently the same amount as John Daly and Greg Norman)As far as their golfing careers there’s no comparing. Miller shot a 63 on Sunday when no one was watching and acts like it was the greatest pressure round in history. He would never be able to go against Faldo with the pressure on.

  • carla

If i had my choice it would be shaun smith on his own.

  • Ron

Miller won 25 times in 385 starts and Faldo won 9 times in 301 starts on the PGA Tour. If both were in their prime, I’d take Miller anyday! Do you remember that for years Faldo was know as Fold-O! I like both as commentators. They both know their stuff and have different styles.

  • Joe

I don’t think I have ever listened to a tournament in its entirety and not said that I wish someone would put Miller in his place….If someone criticized him the way he feels he must do to the tour players in order to please sme of the listeners, he would have folded like a cheap suit…….I turn the TV to mute when he starts talking like he has never experienced a problem notr made a bad decision on the course during tournament play before…….I hope Faldo teaches this guy a little humility, but I don’t think it is possible

  • Teddy Doyon

OMG the two of them PLUS Kelly Tilghman !! Its almost enough to drop watching golf on T.V.. Thank goodness I can use the mute button. Shame, shame on you all :(

  • Lance

Golf Channel was the only station I really liked to watch as it was resonably un-biased, now with Miller it will be the total opposite, golf is not just in the US!

  • heynow

Oh nooooo. Not Nick Faldonk. Id rather
have Lee Trevino than that donk.

Stop the madness of Tilghman and Faldonk
Ill have to watch reruns of Howard Stern TV
    so it will make sense.

  • JOYCE Ann

I dont like Johnny Miller, he is aways talking bad about the golfers, expecially Tiger. He should take a look at himself, he’s not that good and he doesnt rank with Tiger at all I dont look forward to him doing the golf. Get someone else like Jim Nance

  • Chuck

I’m looking forward to it, but I care more about hearing Dan Hicks and Jim Nantz, both are great announcers. The opening videos and theme music for the Masters and US Open with those two narrating gets you pumped for the event….and it’s golf which is hard to do. No one ever really listens to the analysts or cares what they say, we just want to watch golf.

  • JOYCE Ann

Johnny Miller talks bad about the golfers, especially Tiger. He should take a look at himself, he’s not that good and he doesnt rank with Tiger at all I dont look forward to him doing the golf. Get someone else like Jim Nance

  • 007

McCarley added that Miller, “like any great analyst, lacks a filter between his brain and mouth so you never know what will come out — but you know it will be interesting.”

The preceeding statement is true, so maybe what is required is a Ten second delay in the telecast, so that stupid remarks can be cut out…beeped out…or whatever it takes to make the show sensible?

  • golf-fan

Not what I wanted to read. Johnny Miller’s commentary spoils every single golf tournament – when will he realise it is not about him anymore. He is so critical of international players – and never gives them credit for their worldwide wins. I can see my viewing of golf on TV is going to decline in a big way.

  • 007

There’s not need for Miller to say unkind words about Tiger. There is no doubt that Woods will be remembered as one of the best Golfers that ever swung a club, even the one he wrapped around the tree a few years ago.

Tiger Woods as a Golfer has shown his greatness.

  • hao

scott what are you worried about ,with tiger fit & healthy you will only be seeing one player, you don’t need commentry for that *he;s the coloured one.same for all the t/w critics, they suffer from ^selective hearing & viewing ^ anyway.enjoy cheers.

  • Lance

I hope Miller and Faldo change with the times and take the Tiger show out of the news for awhile, it is nice to hear about other golfers besides him, don’t get me wrong I think Tiger is one of the greatest golfers whoever played. But we don’t need to hear about him so much and ignore everyone else when he is playing.
I think Miller is a huge mistake for the Golf Channel…it will make my viewing very limited for sure.

  • Larry

Ron, miller’s prime was a 3-4 year stretch.
Of Faldo’s 9 PGA Tour victories 6 were Majors. And you forgot to count Faldo’s 36 other victories.
Add in Miller’s 1-5 record in play-offs and I’d take Faldo. Miller had one of the most untouchable streches ever topped only by Jack and Tiger (modern day players)but he burnt out quickly and has spent the last 25 years talking about how great he was. Nobody wants to hear it anymore!

  • Nick

Love to listen to both of them. Why did golf announcers always have to be so polite and without opinions? Not like all golfers are perfect gentlemen and without faults. Look forward to some interesting differences of opinion.

  • Kenneth Coutant

Thank God for the DVR jump button!

  • What the F***?

I think having Faldo comentating in America is a bad idea all round. Most Americans don’t get British humour, as a few comments above have shown (aka gail)

  • Shanks

Miller is by far the best announcer these days. I don’t agree with him always, but at least he is always honest and forthright about what he sees.

  • Tone

There’s sanctuary in the booth. And with that goes the commentators’ cardinal sin – smugness. Viewer – resign yourselves, it doesn’t change, and there’s no escape.

  • Waggs

Both of them have big egos, but most that have accomplished anything in their sports do. It’s kind of fun thinking of the 2 of them going at it. Anyone wonder why Faldo doesn’t have the balls to play the senior tour?

  • Mike Fleissner

I like listening to both of them and I look forward to hearing them together. It would be great to get Feherty into the mix too.

  • fuzzy 2

@shanks……I agree ! It just seems that most people commenting here can’t handle JM being honest. If they really knew anything about the game they would also know that he is extremely knowledgable and he DID NOT burn out as was stated here by someone .
Miller and Faldo will be great together .
Especially loved the comment about how the Golf Channel will at least now bw unbiased …..give me a break. Right now it should be called Tiger’s Golf Channel . They act like he is the only player out there .
Think about it….what other player in 28th place and 12 shots back are you going to see on Sunday .

  • lee pfeifer

please anybody but kelly and rich lerner!!! i am tried of hearing about tiger and how the tour misses him and how the golf world revolves around him. if its only johnny and nick i’ll watch and if you keep it that way i’ll watch the reat of the year!1

  • J Bone

What most fail to realize is that Johnny Miller is very knowledgable when it comes to the golf swing. In fact, the only reason why I listen to the commentary is so that maybe I might learn something of value that I didnt know before. Why not listen to a guy who has wisdom and experience? There is always something to learn in the game of golf, it will never be mastered. I think Johnny is a great analyst, albeit he is brash sometimes, but that’s what makes it interesting.

  • Bbentley

If Miller is so horrible and ruins golf tournaments with his announcing, why have they kept him on for over 30 years? He’s fearless and that’s why people like him. He doesn’t try to be the pros friends so he can be objective and not worry about hurting someones feelings. I think the pairing will be great. I like them both, and when Faldo says, “Oh no!” you know it’s good.

  • Pete

Johnny Miller is the most honest and knowledgeable golf analyst on TV and really makes watching golf a lot more interesting than other commentators do. I look forward to the interaction between Miller and Faldo.

  • Bob

Miller is OK but Faldo keeps it light. I enjoy hearing his comments and isn’t on the prim and proper side. Nance and Faldo would be awesome.

  • Scott

hao – that may be true for 15 weeks a year but what about the other 30 something weeks that I watch golf.

  • Bob

    Sorry…Nantz

  • Dave

    Faldo is quite annoying.

  • D.A.C.

Johnny Miller is one of the best golf announcers out there. He is honest with his praise and his criticism. He doesn’t sugarcoat his comments so the pampered rich kids won’t get mad at him. He just tells it like it is. Nick Faldo got off to a slow start in his announcing career but is steadily improving. He is also a very knowledgable analyst and has considerable world wide experience. The only two I like any better are Ferhety and McCord because they are just plain funny. I also received some of the best playing tips from Mr. Miller when I was playing the game. His comments helped me improve more than any other person’s. I am not sure how they will do working together but I am anxious to find out. Best of luck to both of them.

  • Buck Wargo

Love it how you guys are whining about golf announcers. just watch. lol

  • Bob

That’s probably how you deal with your wife….you don’t listen.

  • snowman

All you guys bashing Miller as a not so good player. Bet not one of you could break 100 at Oakmont!!! The guy knows golf give him his due.

  • dmc

ive been involved with the golf tour for many years,,,johnny is the best hes almost always right on,,,like 98 per,,,,,,,once i told him hes doing a great job,,,he says chris dimarco thinks i stink,,,,i said who cares what dimarco thinks,,,he just laughed and said good point,,,,,,,faldo is very very phony,,never ever talked to anyone involved with the tour for many yrs,,,hes tv deal is a total joke as its not him,,,,still to this day he has a huge problem talking with the players,,,,not a genuine guy,,,,he has awonderful record of course 6 majors is just awesome and what he says is right on,,but no way he can relate to any of the players,,,,just my take,,,,

  • Ricky

My handicap has dropped by at least half from just listening to Miller and Faldo.. why wouldn’t anyone not want to listen to these 2 and understand the correct swing.. they make golf on TV so much more enjoyable.. they speak the truth!!

  • Bob

Glad to hear someone listens while they watch.

  • Lenny

I think without a doubt they are the two best announcers in all of golf. If people can’t stand the truth mute your TV. It is refreshing to have someone call it as it is and if some of the head case golfers don’t like it to bad.

  • hao

scott Isn’t i.b.f. & grady over there somewhere.surely they would give an unbiased desc of play.I don’t get the golf channel here.theres no coverage until 6am anyway. so sometimes iam on the net all night between euro & pga, your 4th round doesn’t get going untill about 12-30am monday morning it’s a p.i.a. can’t have everything i suppose.cheers.

  • Tone

Can someone please tell Grady to stop pronouncing the word “only” as “on-ly”.

  • marcc labra

Nick and/or Johnny does not really matter. I watch TV wthout the sound.

  • Sean Smith

@ Ron, You would take Johnny Miller in his Prime over Nick Faldo in his prime? Are you kidding me? You make a big deal over the fact Miller won 25 PGA Events and Faldo won 9 PGA events but 6 of Faldo’s were Majors.

Do you know how many times Johnny Miller won on the European Tour ? 1.

He is an American player, not a WORLD PLAYER, which is why Nick Faldo with his 40 pro wins to Miller’s 32 pro wins, his longer reign at world number 1, his 6 Majors to Miller’s 2 and superior play-off record to Miller’s make’s Faldo the man anyone with HALF A BRAIN would take over Miller ANY DAY!!!

  • Sean Smith

@ Ron, Faldo won 30 times on the European Tour 5 more events than Miller won on the US Tour. 30 wins puts him 5th all time in Career wins. The leader of course is the late great Seve Ballesteros with 50 European Tour victories.

  • Obie Anderson

Miller is the most technically articulate golf analyst on television. I do agree that he can be a bit abrasive at times, as can Faldo who is also superb in his knowledge of the game. Kelly Tilghmann is ok before the play starts and after it is over, but she is annoying during the actual play.

It should be interesting to see how Faldo and Miller do together.

  • Sean Smith

Now onto the topic… Johnny Miller and Nick Faldo in the same booth at the same time?!?!?

Oh my, I would like the fact they both speak the truth and aren’t scared of maybe huring some one’s feelings but what I’m NOT looking forward too is these 2 arrogant old boys talking about “my day” and bragging about how good they use to be. I hope the booth is big enough for BOTH of their HEADS….

  • Geoff

Miller is the best golf announcer around. I do not need to feel bad for any of these pro’s. When they screw up, they screw up and Johnny says so.

I met Faldo and he seemed to be awfully full of himself. Maybe he deserves to be that way but as a hacker I would rather watch flies mate than listen to his dribble.

Put Trevino in the booth with Miller. Now that would be great!!!!

  • Sean Smith

    hurting**

  • Rich

Never mind Miller and Faldo. There will be 8 -count ‘em – 8 announcers to provide CONSTANT chatter. The cardinal rule in broadcast golf is “Silence is deadly.” As someone said, thank God for the ‘mute’ button. Golf channel needs to provide more coverage like the European tour with only 2 or 3 announcers. It’s much more enjoyable to watch.Who needs all the tripe that emanates from the information junkies.

  • Bret Taylor

My big concern will be that they begin to think the story is them, not the golf. They need to reminded that their job is to comment on and alanyze the story, not be the story.

  • Business as usual

Mute your TV, put on your music of choice, ENJOY!!! I don’t need Johnny to explain “pressure” again. I get it. I also don’t need to hear about what to do in the event of a woody lasting more than 4 hours.

  • Bill Drews

If you think this pair is “golf’s announcer dream team”, you are sadly mistaken. Great golfers in the past yes. Best announcers and commentators, far from it……………

  • Peter

Johnny Miller is a better announcer, and was a better golfer than Nick Faldo. Miller played in an era of great closers who knew how to finish tournaments. Trevino, Nicklaus, Player, etc., and was never able to “back into” any major titles. He only traveled to Europe to play in the Open, that’s it. Faldo was able to “back into” a few majors due to choking by others who couldn’t close the deal. Millers “A” game would have put Faldo’s to shame. While Faldo may have dedicated himself to playing and practicing, Miller was a family man first and a golfer second. On talent alone, Miller was the superior player, hands down.

  • tom morris

Like a lot of you, I can not stand Johnny Miller. He always knows best and is very critical of other golfers. If he knows everything then why is he not playing? He knows the best way to do everything. Don’t beleive it, just ask him. Hate to hear he will be on golf channel. Almost makes you want to stop watching Golf Channel.

This is a Terrible Idea! Both of these Clowns Ego’s are the Size of 47 Galaxy’s. It’s already tough enough to watch Golf trying to Stop Johnny Miller’s Head from Swallowing the TV Screen. Throwing In Tricky Nicky into the Mix with his I should have been a Comedian but I’m Not Funny Act, is going to be TORTURE for Golf Fans Just wanting to focus on the Golf Tournament…
I give this half the Season before these two Prom Queens come to Blows. In the meantime Poor Tiger Woods!

  • rabbit

    johnny needs a rug

  • MeThree

Guess that is why there is a mute button on the remote. I don’t like either of them. They both spend way much time talking. I like to watch the golf not hear them blah blah blah.

  • Robert

Duh, I’m surprised by all the negative comments. I love to watch golf on TV and actually like Miller and Faldo. Miller is a little off the wall once in a while, but I think it spices up the slow times. I enjoy Faldo’s British slant on things, because I like brits and aussies. What’s not to like.

  • Bert Beurmann

I am a fan of both these guys, but I think the TV people better get a bigger booth to hold both of these egos at the same time (steel reenforced in case of a serious collisson might help too)

  • T. D.

Great paring, lets give it a try, amazing the knowledge these two have about golf.

  • J Bob

Two wash-ups who don’t want to knock heads on the Senior Tour. They both want you to think about how great they WERE and not what they’ve become. Why is it that every damn TV golf match must have a Brit as one of the announcers? I hate listening to Faldo’s voice and Miller’s whining gets so damn old. If either of them are on, I turn the sound off and just watch.

  • william Hamilton

The commentators of a golf tournament often seem to believe the tournament is about the commentary more than the golf being played. When attending a golf tournament, there is no commentary. How about televising a tournament without any commentary…Only the sounds of golf. Thanks…The Haminator

  • ron

What a team they will be as I don’t recall them every being “real buddies.” Johnny will be more direct, and Sir Nick will be more polished. I’m looking forward to some of their stories, but also hope they tell us more about some of the basics, like flat swing, releasing the ball, leg movement, etc. We read about this stuff, but most writers do a poor job on this. Let us not forget both these great players ended their careers very, very early.

  • rich

there should never be 3 people in the booth in any sport, just to much talking over each other.

  • Uncle Ruckus

Golf commentators generally don’t have much of an impact on my enjoyment of a tournament, so while JM can be overbearing with his criticism at times, I still listen to his insights. As long as we don’t have each event become the Tiger Woods Show – Openning shot of every tournament beginning with Tiger, only to find out he’s tied for 34th place, 9 shots back. I know he sells for the networks, but give Golf fans some credit for wanting to follow the leaders, not just Tiger Woods.

  • Tom Maine

I like em both. Also think Kelly is a great one. Dont understand how CBS and NBC will work this out but it will be fun to see and I for one am looking forward to seeing what transpires.

  • Mike

I’ll take Miller and Faldo every day of the week. If the folks at CBS and NBC really want to improve golf telecasts, they’ll get rid of totally useless Jim Nantz and Mr. obvious Dan Hicks. Neither one adds anything informative to the viewers.

  • Eric Rose

This should be fun. Faldo is a funny guy and Miller has never had a problem speaking his mind about a poor shot or bad choice. I lack Golf Channel where I go to school, so I won’t get the pleasure of seeing this duo, but I presume it will be fun.

  • Coach Eddie

I can’t think of a worse senario that those two together. I tune in to golf tournaments to watch golf, not to listen to a couple of oversized egos .I got more than enough of Miller on seven nights at the academy.

  • John B. Wright

This should be good…I know these two the “love’m or hate’m” tag but I think it’s brilliant!

Faldo the “aloof” and Miller the “wicked tongue” of Utah…you can’t make this stuff up!

Miller dominated Golf in 73-74…maybe the was as much coverage, but you play Nicklaus week after week and dominated everybody, including Trevino, Floyd.

Faldo was also dominate and no one had his mental make-up…his denise was these the club between his legs!

Good for the Golf Channel…I’m watching

  • TK911

I liked them as players, but as announcers they are boring. I would rather see Johnny Miller and Judy Rankin calling the shots.

  • Stan

Personally, there is too much talking going on in golf tournaments. If you watch to learn more about the game, the best way is to have the mute button on. Watch the player, and study how he reacts to all situations.
Watching golf on television is in a one hour period, 35 min of commercials, 25 min of chatter between announcers, and 5 min of golf coverage.I find it hard to watch, other than the masters. Those guys know how to do it.

  • TruroTrash

Johnny Miller will go down as the worst golf announcer of all time. Not only does he think he’s God’s gift to golf, but the sound of his voice no doubt gives people seizures. I am one who watches TV on mute when Miller is involved and will continue to do so.

  • Dean

I think you guys are letting your feelings about Miller as a commentator affect your thoughts on him as a golfer. To be frank, Johnny Miller IS one of the best golfers of all time. You may not like his commentary. You may not like the way he talks about his past. All that aside, he’s one of the best ever. Dude has 25 PGA Tour wins, which is 23rd all time, ahead of players like Gary Player, Raymond Flody, Hale Irwin, Davis Love III, Greg Norman, Tom Kite, Ernie Els (I could go on). His span of victories range from 1971 to 1994, a period 24 years. Only 4 players have a bigger span than that – Sam Snead (30), Raymond Floyd (30), Tom Watson (25) and Jack Nicklaus (25).

And you guys that scoff that he “only had 2 majors”. There have been only 33 golfers ever to get more than that.

And Miller’s 63 at the U.S. Open on Sunday was arguably the best pressure round of golf ever played. The U.S. Open has always been the toughest major to win (based upon course setup), so to go out and shoot a 63 with the likes of Trevino, Nicklaus, Player and Palmer (who was leading the tourney starting Sunday) all ahead of him is no small feat. That round alone certainly doesn’t validate him as one of the greatest golfers of all time (his career does). But that round certainly entitles him to brag a bit about it because that was something that may never happen again.

  • goja57

Dean, nice perspective on Miller’s career. If I needed someone to go out and shoot a low round I would choose Miller. If I needed someone to shoot a level par round on a tough golf course I would take Faldo in a heartbeat. Faldo understood that par was a good score at a major and honed his game accordingly. I do not have the stats, but from what I can remember Faldo rarely made a double or worse when he played, particularly in majors.

  • John

Miller is the best golf commentator of the last 20 years, and has great insights into the players’ thoughts processes. Faldo is okay, but Nance makes him better.

Its crazy that people want to diss Miller’s playing career, as though a short career counts for nothing. Only Nelson, Hogan, and Tiger have ever had a stretch of golf like Miller did.

I saw Miller in ’79 and he had 240 to an elevated pin at Warwick Hills (par 5) and heard him tell his caddy that a driver would land by the hole but would bounce too hard on the green, whereas a 3 wood would land in the heavy rough 15 feet short of the front pin. He put the 3 wood exactly there and made birdie. No one hits the ball that straight any more.

  • Andrew-Sydney Aus

Faldo,Miller,Rolfing,Feherty,McCord,Nobilo,Baker-Finch whoever it may be doesn’t matter. The coverage is never boring, the pictures are always great. The US tour coverage is by far the best in the world and adds to the drama of it all. I’m from Aus and we have some good coverage here to but nothing compares to yours over there. We get the coverage live in the early hours of the morning and i never miss it. Can’t wait for it all to begin!!

  • abigguy2

I like pineapple and I like peanut butter, but I’m pretty sure that peanut butter and pineapple would suck.

  • geeteepee

Andrew-Sydney Aus, “the US tour coverage is by far the best in the world”….. that is the funniest comment ever posted on the Tour Report.

  • Sleepy

PLEASE lose Johnny!!!!!!!!!!! He makes Venturi at his febrile, demented nadir seem bold and knowledgeable! If JM is in the booth the sound is off here!

  • Andrew-Sydney Aus

    Geeteepee
funniest in what way?. If you think it’s not then please let me know which coverage is. As much as i also love the European tour, Asian tour or South African, they do not match the excitment that is created by the US networks..

I actually think the pairing won’t work, but I think it’s a great idea to try. Miller to me is one of the best sports commentators in any sport, period. Faldo brings a more aloof approach. I find him to be pretty damn funny, informative for sure, but funny. I just don’t see the pair working. It would be nice if it would. Again, I think it’s great to try it out, but ultimately I think it won’t last.

  • Jerry

I don’t care for Miller if he was as good as he thinks he was then he would have won at least 15 majors. I would like to buy him for what he is worth and sell him for what he thinks he is worth I would be as rich as Bill Gates.

Also get rid of Kelly Tilgham she thinks she is a man. She uses ever worn out golf phrase ever spoken.

  • Pat

    I agree with Jerry.

  • peter boz

You’ve got most of the bland golfers in the world, now you want bland commentary.. Give me Miller and Faldo anyday.. They may not always be right, but at least they have an opinion..

  • teacher

Faldo should get back on the course and let his clubs do the talking like Freddie and Tom. Miller is a golf legend and was entertaining in the big collared polos.

  • Steve

Miller is the best and Faldo may be a good side kick to him. But I do agree have to get rid of Tilgman, she is so boring and monotone

  • sdf

I am surprised by how much dislike there is for Johnny. It shows the level of understanding of most viewers. Johnny Miller is presenting the game to you in a way nobody else does. His criticisms are mostly true and always honest. Why would you want an announcer to sugarcoat anything for the benefit of a player’s emotions?

The idea that he talks himself up is exaggerated too. For every time he tells you about his laser iron ability in the mid 70′s (which is completely accurate by the way), he will go on about how he could miss a 3 footer by a foot when his yips were bad. He’ll openly discuss mental and physical battles that players face under pressure and how he succumbed to it as bad as anybody.

Keep it up Johnny, the real fans appreciate it.

  • Higgy

Pineapple and peanut butter sounds amazing!

  • Mark

Sir Nick…… is he a Sir in this country? What a joke

  • Dean

I completely agree with sdf. Miller is the real deal. Yep, he sure enough will tell you about his great achievements, but this is no different than most other great athletes – it is part of their makeup that allows them to be so great. But as sdf says, he has no trouble telling you his weaknesses and bad moments either. I think because many of you find Miller’s personality abrasive, it is allowing your perceptions of him to be swayed a bit, and somewhat exaggerated. Miller is certainly one of the greatest players of all-time. IMO Faldo was better because he won 6 majors, but Miller is right up there. Let’s all not forget, there was a time when Faldo was considered one of the biggest jerks out there on the course. He was Monty on steroids. He didn’t lighten up until very late in his career after he had lost his edge. He will even tell you this is true – he is very open about this.

I like them both as announcers…can’t wait to hear the broadcasts from Maui!

  • dave schwind

This will be FANTASTIC! These two will add a lot to the telecast…

  • Paul G

I have never seen so many whinging comments. How about you save it til after the broadcast, then you all can speak with authority.

  • Tulsa

Actually, will have to agree with earlier comment.. gets kind old that Faldo acts the same way and makes the same kind of statements everytime.. whether it’s the golf channel special they did together or whatever.. Nick just be a professional and bring what you can to the broadcast without being so negative

  • zach

    sdf and Dean are right.

I get so sick of hearing how the pros are just SOOO amazing. Yes they make lots of shots that I just couldn’t pull off, but they also make plenty of BIG misses. With an average green size of around 5000 square feet, missing a green from the tee or fairway is a huge miss…and they seem to miss a lot.

Pros screw up just like us. And Miller tells us what they did to screw up. Faldo tells us how he would have played the shot. (Coincidentally…I don’t care what he would have done.)

I like how brutally honest Miller is. Faldo seems pompous. Maybe the “knighthood” has gone to his head.

  • seff

Andrew Sydney – I dont know how you evaluate a good coverage – I think the US tour TV coverage is woeful. I watch it for 30 mins and am screaming in frustration. You see very few of the field, have to watch commentary when play is on (commentators and their guests should be heard and not seen) and see very little of the play. I did a check and the us coverage averaged 1 shot / per minute over an hour. Other tour coverages are much higher than that. With TW back there will be fewer players to see.

  • geeteepee

seff, woeful is the right word

  • Tim

The arrogance in Miller can turn off the novice, medium and experienced golf watcher in a second. There is not a personality like his in ANY sport allowed to commentate, Jim Grey was the last and he wasn’t even a former pro of anything. Give the golf and sports world a break, and an increase to your ratings, and ditch this guy- he should be allowed near a mic.

  • Cody

    I’d rather see a Nantz-Hicks combo instead…

  • Martin from Adelaide Aust

Andrew from Sydney Aust, check out the European Tour coverage. There are so many really good players now and the courses are not perfect like the American courses, so it not just a putting competition every week. The Majors are and the Players are still good value, but week by week it is not that stimulatiing.

  • Sam

    I like them both.

  • Tulsa

Allis.. wow.. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO put me to sleep. That is NO INSIGHT.. geez.. And I like Kelly ! Miller is open to the 2 of them together. Nick always has to have the negative comments… Just do the JOB Nick or get off

  • john than

miller thinks he’s underrated, faldo thinks he’s overrated.so this might work!!!!!

  • Gord

To get away from this for just a minute, I was just reading another blurb about Dustin Johnson, will he ever be No.1. Comments from the likes of Chris Dimarco, he’s the best athelete on tour, he’s the Iceman, then if he is this good why did he totally disappear in the President’s Cup. To me I think he is another Phil the Thrill, bang for show putt for damn I lost aother one. Tey hold the same flag- I WILL NEVER BE NO. 1

  • MPR

Have you all lost your minds and sense of humor. Why don’t all of the “fans of golf” relax and stop taking themselves so seriously? Miller is a good commentator, I understand he offends some and is beyond brutally honest, but most of us have no clue how difficult the shots are and he definitely keeps it in perspective (not over-rating average golf shots for professionals).

Faldo is also a good commentator, contrasting styles make for good repartee and debate among the viewers. I look forward to it and commend TGC for having the moxy to give this a try. Add Feherty, my favorite, and it could be the best show on TV.

  • Andrew-Sydney Aus

    Martin from Adelaide
I know what you’re saying mate and i agree the Europeantour has improved by lengths with the quality of players and courses etc. But i must say that the commentary lacks a little excitement and humour and is much easier to fall asleep to (and as you know we watch it late evening). Still love to listen to the NBC team or CBS, they both have quality commentators but yes i wish they would show a little more golf. As for Miller, i love how he loves the Shark. He always refers to Greg as being the best driver of the ball and many other things..

  • Gord

Serlock you think Peter Costas is better but isn’t it Costas who interviewed a caddy instead of the player who won the tournament- does the Steve Williams interview ring any bells ?

  • Grace

What happened to Brandel Chamblee, he is the best… Thought he was lead analyst..

  • Gord

Grace have to agree with you, Brandel Chamblee, should be lead if he isn’t. He is very knowledgeable about the game, tells it like it is, gives credit where credit is due. He was all over Tigers swing changes at first when he was going nowhere but gave him credit when it started to come together. Miller just seems to focus on the negative.

  • James Libby

Awesome pairing. Very knowledgable, and they both like to have fun. I will enjoy it greatly.

  • Brentster

Johnny’s been doing it for years, because his brutal honesty is what golf needs, from the viewer’s perspective. It’s probably because Miller got feedback, after a crucial tournament, and it helped to correct future failures. Not that Johnny & Nick, er Sir Nick, will not have to endure some certain flubs, of the mic, that is. Kelly appears to be broadcasting for the wrong sport, not that I don’t like her anyway. When Brandel does some of his swing analysis, it’s free-flowing, but technical…, illuminative.
Now if Fuh hair it Tee, and mustachio could free-wheel it from the fairway, and send it back to Jim Nantz, oh sorry I went to commercial again…

  • Paul

Thank goodness fr the mute button, oh, des everyone know Johnny Miller sht 62 to in th US Open just ask him!

  • lancew

I could care less who’s in the booth blithering away – that’s not why I watch a golf tournament. I usually mute the sound to avoid the constant inane jabber & the rather dumb/boring interviews.

  • Bill Bartlett

I am just excited about the upcoming 2012 season with all the young players and Tiger being back. Both Miller and Faldo have great playing credentials but I can do without any bickering between them. No comments, no sarcastic remarks, etc. just give me the golf shot critiques only. The year is about the golf, not the commentators.

  • Kendall

I love the idea of the pairing. The biggest problem with Golf Channel is they don’t show enough golf shots during a telecast. They chat way too much. Watch their telecasts compared to say CBS and see how many shots they actually show. And they only show the same golfers over and over again. In a tournament like Maui, with only tour winners present, they should show as many of the golfers and shots as they can and talk less…especially Kelly and Lerner.

  • Don2

Johnny Miller isn’t honest. He never focuses on a positive action, only a negative one so that’s why he finds fault with everybody. He’s depressing. The other day he said people like him criticizing.
I guess he only asks the opinion of other negative and critical people, because anyone I talk to hates his negative commentary. I miss Faldo and Azinger. That was a good pairing. The Australian commentators down under were the best. They were positive analysts and optimistic. A nice change from T.G.C. crew.
I’m not interested in listening to people who can only find fault in others.

  • Don2

Kendall, I couldn’t agree with you more. You’re bang on. I tune in to watch the golfers not the commentators. I’m not interested in all that idle chatter. I don’t care about those interviews either. I want to watch golf shots.

  • Ross Tuck

All of them talk too b….. much. Why can’t they spend a bit of time and listen to Peter Allis who knows when to shut up. Ewen Murray is another top rater who knows his onions and there is not one Yank who would even come close to these two. BTW, I am no Pom/Limey or Scot. In fact of those on the Golf Chanel who knows his onions well is Frank Nobilo and he is the only KIWI on the panel. I sincerely hope some of the producers take a bit of notice and advise for a little humility and a lot more respect to the players and a few more gags!!!

  • Greg G

I think Faldo will have to bite durin much of the telecast. Miller get’s on my nerves. I will sometimes watch the golf on mute if he is working. Highest rated commentater? Shows you who the mainstream viewers are. Actually interested in hearing Faldo tear him up. This could be fun and humerous, or awkward and tense.

  • Butterball

I will be looking forward to listening to both of them. Don’t really care if one is pompous and one is arrogant. JM tells it like it is. Nice to see the players make giant mistakes and mis-hits just like us plodders. I just hope they show ALL the golfers and speak well of them when they hit a good shot as well as point out the mistakes when they hit a bad shot. They are both good announcers in their own way.

  • Teddy Doyon

I think Miller and Faldo need to move to Maine…such a short golf season, therefore less of them ! Ole Kelly can join them in due time but beware she’ll need to get rid of her monotone voice or else the cows will come home, oh boy !!!!

  • BILL

Miller has enough skins on the wall to allow him to comment – too bad if these guys don’t want to hear it – most of what he says is 100% right on – lovew hearing the unfiltered stuff even if I might not agree 100% – should be must watch TV if both he & Faldo bring their A games to the telecast

  • Al MacInnis

I think Johnny Miller is supreme. He calls a spade a spade and 99% of the time he’s bang on with his comments and theories. I love the guy he’s super in my eyes. No complaints about Nick either!!

  • dean

I’m surprised at the negative remarks about Johnny Miller. He’s the best golf commentator ever. But I guess he’s like Howard Cosell- some people are just going to hate him for no reason.

  • Gord

The Golf Channel and CBS should get rid of Faldo. Can’t stand him. Johnny’s the best.

  • lb

C’mon Man! Where’s everyone’s tolerance of others? Are you perfect? NO, I didn’t think so!
So, although I don’t agree completely with everything Johnny or Nick spews out, they both bring a vast amount of knowledge and, dare I say it, “entertainment” to the broadcast booth. And that, quite frankly, is what they get paid for. And btw, when it comes to analyzing a golf swing, Miller is second to none.
    Rock on Miller/Faldo!!

  • Bartman/Orlando

I think this is a good experiment. It could be interesting. Lets give them a shot and see what develops. Could be fun just to see how many things they agree upon. If it gets too bad, GC will pull the plug.

  • Don

I am very suprized that both of these guys didn’t win every tournament they were in, because they both seem to know everything there is to know about golf!!

  • Chuck

Miller stinks. I hope a whale eats him

  • pd

    Aliss-commentator gold standard
    Nantz-commentator nadir
    Lerner-only thing lower than Nantz
    Chamblee-knows it all
    Tilghman-hot
    Nick, Johnny-OK by me!

  • Steve

I’m looking forward to the pairing. It will either be “the bomb” or it will be “a bomb”.

  • Norm

Not a big Faldo fan especially after the cheap shot he took about Tiger “missing the window of opportunity” . He does not seem to have good relationships with the PGA Tour players and the Knighthood is a total farce. Oh-by-the-way, what strength of field did he get his 30 wins against in Europe? If he is such a high quality announcer, why is he not doing the European or some other tour – I am certain we (US)can find Americans to do the job.

  • pd

    As long as I’m pontificating,

    I love the Maltbie!

Also, there’s a distressingly short list of announcers that respect or are even aware of proper verb/modifier agreement while working the games.

  • Grant Benton

They are totally opposite, Miller is the proverbial “UGLY AMERICAIN” and Faldo is a gentleman right down to his socks. Like so many other viewers, I use the mute button when miller speaks. If he had a brain he would be dangerous.

  • george

Miller is the best commentator around. Lose Faldo and tilghmann. She is doing a little better, but continues to fail to acknowledge her fellow workers; ie the on course announcers and the people in the towers. They deserve more respect. She needs a simple map of who is where. They work hard and have names.

  • Rebecca

No, not looking forward to it Golf Channel. Nick is my favorite announcer, Johnny my least favorite. One of the reasons I have loved watching Golf Channel is because there was no Johnny! He is so negative, I get very tired of it.

  • PaulinTexas

It not the commentatirs that bother me, it is the producer or the director of the telecast. No matter what is happening, they will show Tiger walking down the fairway than show shot by another golfer as a replay. There are too many young golfer for the producer to continue showing Tiger as if he is in his prime.

  • Susan

It will be interesting to see JM choke on any kind words now that Tiger is putting his game back together; I’ve noticed that he now says nothing when Tiger hits a great shot……

  • seff

It would be great if they turned up for work in a clown suit. Then we would not have to watch the commentators. These guys should be heard and not seen when there is live play going on. As for the pairing, who cares really – it is not about the commentary. Both these guys make sense on the game – they should – it is their life. Alliss is a brilliant commentator but his playing record, although pretty impressive, is not what makes him good. You rarely hear him talk about himself or his achievements. He is good because he paints a verbal picture that compliments the golf action. You dont have to know what he looks like. I think US golf coverage could learn from this concept.

  • Vegasjim

I like Faldo better than Miller. Miller talks about guys “gagging” on a shot, or a putt, like he made everything during his career. He had the yips as bad as anyone. Faldo, on the other hand, can be critical, yet realistic, in his analysis of a golfer/shot/putt.
I like one analyst ( preferably Faldo ) and one sidekick, not two analysts.
I saw Miller at the Players two years ago. He was walking around like HE was the star, not the players. He would not even sign any autographs. He has always been full of himself

  • Vegasjim

What??? No follow up to my comments???

  • Susan

I like Faldo better as well; he has a quirky sense of humor and he knows his stuff — I usually learn something new when he is doing analysis

  • Ian

i wonder if johnny miller remembers craig parry? Probably the greatest commentary gaff of all time!

  • Kevin Poore

Miller was an exceptional tee to green player-but his putting problems basically ended his career. I love how he doesn’t baby or coddle the pampered players.

Faldo is a terrible analyst. He mostly mumbles or says “oh no” or things that are useless.

My biggest problem isn’t the announcers however, it’s the actual lack of showing golf shots that has me watching less and less golf.

I don’t ever want to see the announcers-please keep the cameras on the actual golf shots, why do we have to see useless interviews? If you are interested in hearing what a players says you can read about it after the golf is completed for the day.

  • SAm

Kelly Tilghman is the WORST….beyond annoying…I have to mute the broadcast!

  • SAm

Kelly Tilghman is the WORST….beyond annoying…I have to mute the broadcast! Almost as bad as Gary McCord

  • Mr. Tour

I think a good combo would be Paul Azinger, Curtis Strange, and Brandel Chamblee. Jim Nantz is ingratiating! Miller is actually a funny guy.

  • Mr. Tour

I agree with Kevin Moore in that American golf broadcasts seem to be all talk and no show. That’s why I enjoy watching European golf when it’s shown on the GC. MORE GOLF!

  • Michael

Not a good mix. Ken Venturi and Tony Trabert knew when silence created more drama. Too many microphones in play now.

  • Big Foot

I guess I can watch with the sound off!

  • G.K.

I like Johnny Miller and Nick Faldo, but have never enjoyed a broadcast more than when Paul
Azinger Nick Faldo are together, stuff you never get tired of between those two. Wish they could sign Paul to contract with Nick, to would be unbeatable team.

  • carl

Great pair-will make golf more interesting to watch. You now have two pros. (experts)

  • Dog

I am glad that Curtis the whiner is not in this crew that would indeed be strange.

  • JimD

Hey, America. Faldo is just teasing in the British fashion when he slags Miller. He means the exact opposite and respects his colleague. Johnny knows that and they are both interesting commentators for us fans.

  • AT

    BRANDEL CHAMBLEE!!!!!!

  • Eric Rose

I wish I had Golf Channel at school, but I don’t and just got to school yesterday. I will have to find a way to get coverage. Great announcer pairing. I remember seeing this a few weeks ago and thought, “Why did this not happen before?”

  • Peter

Both Miller and Faldo are great commentators with different styles. If nothing else, it should offer some entertainment. However, remember, the show is about the golf not the commentators. To enhance the viewers experience the producers should be showing more action from all the players, not just those in contention. It would be also be great if the commentators and on course announcers start calling the good with the bad. I cringe every time, and it happens frequently when I hear them kissing the players a**es.

  • fuzzy 2

…..gail..and do you ever , I mean EVER have a positive thing to say about anyone or anything European ?
    Best commentator…Johnny Miller , no contest .

  • Matt Lloyd

I already listen to music and watch the golf on mute… commentators are pointless. The only person I’d turn on the sound to listen to talk about golf is Charles Barkely!

  • RC

I love Johnny’s style on the air. He doesn’t pull any punches and is not afraid to criticize Tiger or anyone else for that matter. He is very knowledgeable about the game and it’s history.

Sir Nick, on the other hand, is so hard to understand with that British brogue and rambling style of his. I just wish we had another Ken Venturi out there to call the game. He didn’t say anything just to hear himself talk. He was not egotistical in the least. Nick really doesn’t know when to shut up and let the viewer enjoy the golf. By the way, Nick, you are NOT Harrison Ford.

  • paula

johnny miller is the BEST…faldo~not so much..hopefully this will be the LAST time for this pairing.

  • Anderson McDougalsworthiness

They should put Glen Day in the booth with Miller. Glen Day pounds the ball and is a slick talker when it comes to the ladies. I once saw Glen in a bar near Mobile, Alabama work these two women. He was necking with both of them all night and before you knew it, he walked out with both of them. Glen is a great putter too.

  • CGB

Miller has only said negative things about Woods since the cheating incidents, and they’re nowhere near as negative as he deserves. For 12 years we listened to nothing but over-the-top Tiger worship from Miller. He should have criticized him more often throughout his career and then he wouldn’t seem as much a hypocrite for bad-mouthing him now. It’s time to pick a new likeable favorite for the commentators to focus on, someone with actual talent and a little humility like Steve Stricker or David Toms.

  • TM

Faldo and Miller – don’t know how they’re going to fit both of their heads in the booth.

  • golface145

Over here in the UK will all admire Faldo for what he did on the course. However when it to off course situations he open his mouth too much.

He tried to be funny but ended up putting his feet in it.You guys in the US are more than welcome to him

Faldo has a head as big as London Bridge

  • RC

    golface145…

I love it when a fellow Brit tells it like it is when it comes to Faldo’s hat size! Just wish the Golf Channel would take this boring, rambling head case off the air.

PLEASE don’t replace him with Kelly T. She is so obnoxious it makes my head spin. They have tried to make her look more like a girl but it ain’t workin’ folks.

  • Doug

Let’s hear it for Glen Day folks!!!

  • Travis

Your mute button is going to get plenty of use when you tune in to the Golf Channel this season…

  • Mike Miller

This pairing delivers the cult of personality to golf broadcasting. For the first time, the commentary is more anticipated, and thus potentially more newsworthy, than the golf!

Congratulations golf channel on a new all-time low.

What’s next? A hot dog-eating contest while the leader’s walking up the 18th?

  • Peggy Bergin

There is nobody like Johnny Miller when it comes to covering golf, always telling it like it is, he’s my very favorite broadcaster. I can’t wait to hear him and Faldo in the booth and Faldo with his English accent, please don’t call it a brogue, sounds like he has a hot potato in his mouth. Go get him Johnny.

  • Pat

Johnny and Nick together sounds great! Get rid of Hicks – (he doesn’t know anything about golf) and I won’t have to touch my mute button.

  • perry

Miller has won enough awards as a broadcaster to call him the best ever in any sport but opinions are like a certain part of the anatomy everyone has one. I can’t believe the losers who are driving the wrong way down the freeway who attack Miller. Faldo is also very good. Get a life folks I will bet most of you negative types are divorced losers with no friends.

  • perry

I have never met a good player who didin’t like Miller as an announcer. No less than Jack Nicklaus told Howard Cosell that he thought Johnny had as much talent as anyone he played with. Johnny is like a good director in that he sets the stage, paints a picture, adds to the drama and is unafraid to go on a limb. How about today’s round when Stricker is floundering and Miller pick’s him to hang on and when when myself, Faldo and everybody else thinks he is going to crash and Stricker goes out and birdies the last 4 holes. Face it Miller has insight and the guts to make a call and is uncanny correct.

  • JimD

Talk about negative! Let’s not get so personal about us divorced losers.

  • JET99999

Amazing Hi DEF and camera work on Sunday. Kind of fun listening to the commentary. Ok so they’re both wise guys, but also damn good golfers.

  • Michael Doll

Man, oh man! I’m glad I came to this website — I thought perhaps I was the only one that thought both Miller & Faldo are terrible (and obnoxious) announcers. It’s good to know that others think so too, although I’m surprised at the number of people who apparently like Miller. I enjoyed the image coverage that was provided by the Golf Channel (it really showed off Maui), but the commentary stunk. I’m looking forward to the SONY this weekend, but I can only hope it will be sans Miller & Faldo.

  • JET99999

I’ve been watching the SONY all weekend, They got Faldo and some other guy who sounds like Detective Crockett on Miami Vice (Don Johnson) – I don’t recall his name.

Faldo was actually very good. Lots of good analysis and jokes now and then. Other guy OK too. Good combination with these 2.

  • T. L.

Faldo is unwatchable! His commentary is innane, he is just a cloying individual. Just because he was a good golfer does not mean he should be an announcer. When he comes on Tv at our club, things get thrown at the TV. What a dork he is. . . We cannot stand him and do not watch tournaments that he is part of.
