Notable groups for the first round

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The crowd at the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale is always ready, no matter who’s in the group stepping to the tee at the famous par 3. These fans know the players’ college fight songs, their nicknames and basically anything else that’s good for a laugh.

So here are some of the groups they’ll been watching on Thursday during the first round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open:

Players Rd. 1 tee time (all ET) Comment
Kyle Stanley
Fred Couples
Bud Cauley
9:48 a.m. (No. 10) Stanley will be the sentimental favorite after Sunday’s disappointment. Fellow Washington native Couples is always a draw, and Cauley is another of the TOUR’s young stars.
Webb Simpson
Keegan Bradley
Jerrod Lyle
10:15 a.m. (No. 10) A year ago, Bradley tried unsuccessfully to qualify at Phoenix, now he returns as a major winner. Simpson picked up where he left off in 2011 with a T3 in his first start in Hawaii.
Brandt Snedeker
Mark Wilson
Johnson Wagner
2:16 p.m. (No. 1) This group contains three of this year’s winners and three of the top four in the FedExCup. Wagner has top-10s in his first three starts.
Bubba Watson
Gary Woodland
Ian Poulter
2:25 p.m. (No. 1) Want to watch big hitters? Watson and Woodland are two of the longest. Poulter makes his 2012 debut a week after the birth of his fourth child.

kyle bad mistake you made but your in good company…I remember ernie els doing very similar about four years ago {2 str lead par5 reach in two} he put 2 balls in the water to lose. move forward it happens ..good luck cheers/.

  • Jeff

That Watson-Woodland-Poulter three-ball will be fun to watch.

  • Schuyler

Of course the Fowler-Dustin-mickelson group isn’t notable. WTF

  • 007

Schuyler —- Don’t worry about the noteable Groups picked by the panel to watch. I bet the Fowler-Johnson-Mickelson Group will draw the most followers.

I feel sorry for Kyle Stanley losing last week when he Teed-off on the 18th and threw the game away. Hopefully, once he starts on Thurday, he will not let the past become a problem this week. After saying that, I don’t think he is going to win this time.

  • Robert

Maybe Poulter will miss the cut.

  • Bill

who are the writers for this site? Mickelson is gonna be desperate to turn it around, and DJ and Rickie are two of the biggest names among the young guns on tour and they are all playing together in the same group…that is the only group I am gonna follow on Thursday. Is this for real?

  • scott

dj rf p m whos making lists a moron

  • scott

why would phil be notable he only has more wins than all the notable players together

  • Jesse

    What about Johnson, Mickelson, Fowler?

  • Nathan

Wow – DJ, Rickie and Phil not notable. Ok.

I’m going to the open tomorrow and guess which group will have the largest crowd? None of the “notable” groups listed here, that’s for sure.

    Fail PGATour.com. Fail. lol

  • John

Maybe Mrs. Stanley should have had his caddy line him up a little better, what happen to ALL those fist bumps?

  • Tomlin

Everyone needs to chill out! If you got here from the the PGAtour.com home page you would have seen that the listed groups here are the “OTHER” notable groups outside of Phil, Rickie and DJ. Get a grip. Come on Man!

  • Longhorn

So all the drunken ASU students won’t be the notable groups?

  • joe

figgy is becomming more notable every week he plays…for good or bad.

  • Dad

I like that the PGA Tour is pairing notable groups together. Out of the four notable groups and the Phil, Rickie, and Dustin pairing, there’s a very good chance the winner is one of them!

  • Ken

Kyle, heartbreaking to watch a decent approach shot go in the water. But as the sayings go, it gets better. Go get that first win. You will get one.
