Clothes, clubs make statements

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The pants were emerald green while the shoes were more of a lime hue. Rickie Fowler’s shirt featured stripes from both ends of that spectrum with a little blue and purple thrown in for good measure.

His playing partners in Thursday’s Featured Group at TPC Scottsdale, not surprisingly, were a little more understated. Dustin Johnson’s shirt was basic white while Phil Mickelson wore a black one  with a maroon vest.

And the way Fowler talked, he’s got more interesting combinations to come.

"Obviously it’s been a great partnership with Waste Management partnering up with the Thunderbirds," Fowler said. "The Thunderbirds have been great to me, and this is my way of showing support. I know that ‘Green Out’ is on Saturday, so the questions have been why am I wearing it today. Puma has got me with plenty of green, so no worries."

While Fowler may have made the fashion statement, Mickelson and Johnson let their clubs do the talking — posting rounds of 68 that left him three strokes off the lead after the first round of the Waster Management Phoenix Open. But Fowler was only one stroke behind the two.

"Great pairing, two guys that I love playing with," Fowler said. "Dustin lives close to me and I’ve spent some time with some Phil in some practice rounds and obviously Ryder Cup together, but a lot of fun. Feeding off each other out there, and hopefully we can get things going well."

"It’s fun out here," Johnson said, agreeing with his neighbor. "We had a big crowd following us today, me, Phil and Rickie. It was a good day. The fans were great. I played pretty well today, got off to a good start, just hit some really good shots, hit some poor shots. But today it was out there to shoot a good score."

Mickelson, in particular, remains a favorite in Phoenix two decades after graduating from Arizona State. He’s a two-time champion of the tournament, as well.

"It’s really cool coming back here," Mickelson said. "Obviously playing with Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson who have a huge following, and then to come back to the community here where I spent so many years, met my wife, had our first couple children, it’s a cool place. We all played okay, and it was a fun day.

"I love playing this golf course. I think this course has great risk-reward. It entices you to go for it, but it also penalizes you if you don’t pull off a shot. I think it’s a wonderful course and an exciting course to watch on."

Mickelson’s first-round result was considerably better than his last two tournaments where he opened with rounds of 74 and 77. He still wasn’t totally pleased by the way he hit the ball after finding just half his fairways and greens. But the 24 putts was cause for optimism.

"I feel good, especially on the greens," Mickelson said. "I feel really good with the putter, and I haven’t had this feeling for some time, but I could tell in the off season it was really coming. My ball-striking wasn’t as sharp as I wanted, but I hit a lot of good shots. I’m going to go up to my club up north here and get a little work done ball striking this afternoon and see if I can get it dialed in for tomorrow.

“This course if you’re precise and hit great golf shots, you’ll be rewarded, but because the greens aren’t holding, if you don’t hit it perfect, it will release to a distance that’s tough to make birdies, and I think that makes for a really good test."

  • PHIL Fan for life

Phil will have a GREAT year. Never under estimate Lefty. He is just getting started this year. It is a long season!! He is the only reason I watch golf!!

  • NOT a PHIL Fan for life

You’re seriously a Phil fan for life? Ugh. He could retire today and I’d be happier for it. Just the truth.

  • PHILS da MAN

leftys gonna win at augusta and olympic. @ NOT a PHIL Fan for life do u like dorkie fowler or tiger cheatin woods

  • GHav

Good Luck this week Rickie. You never criticise people and just go about your business with class and style. Something many could learn from I think.

Phil hasn’t played consistently well since the first half of 2010 and his career is thus at a crossroads.

He might get a second wind, or he might struggle to win again.

Many formerly good players are in the same over-40, can’t-win, situation right now: Goosen, Els, Appleby, Furyk, Singh, Allenby, Cabrera, Levet, Darren Clarke, Karlsson, etc.

Only Stricker, Toms, Bjorn, Taniguchi, Fujita & Choi seem to be successfully defying the age curse?

  • Bex

I don’t know about the over 40′s that cant win. Clarke did win a major last year and Furyk played well in the Presidents cup as well as winning three times in 2010 along with the fedex cup. By the way who are Taniguchi and Fujita and how are they defying the age curse.

  • Bex

I have been a big fan of Phil for a while now however I dont see him winning another major championship

  • mike miller

Ben, Taniguchi & Fujita are two of the best players on the Japan Tour who are winning and also over-40.

Japan’s a strong tour, a lot better than the Nationwide Tour, for example.

  • Sean Smith

The Japanese tour is less talented than the Hooters Tour. Ryo Ishikawa has 2 top 10′s in 35-40 PGA events. He is widely considered the best Japanese player. Fact is, the Japanese Tour is like the Tarheel Tour.

Here’s hoping Anthony Kim, gets in the clubhouse under par. Really needs it for his confidence, big fan of his and he needs to recapture form quickly as he is sliding down the world rankings. What was the story with his caddie carring a small bag yeaterday.

  • bill11

Anthony Kim doesn’t currently have a bag deal. the announcers said that he is in commercials with a nike bag but he is going through a change in sponsor only for the bag.

  • Up 'n Down

A Kim lost his bag sponsor because he has been terrible as of late. “Tiger Cheatin Woods” LMAO. He may cheat but how does that make him any different than almost every other superstar athlete? At least he had consent, look at Big Ben or Kobe. His personal life is none of our business, but we can thank him for all he has done for the game of golf…Go DJ!

mike miller no one cares about the Jpanese tour. You could send a 5-handicaper over there and they could win. Also Karlesson just won over in Europe and as Bex said Furyk and Clarke had wins recently. That leaves Appleby who won recently by shooting 59, Allenby who hasn’t one in 10 years so that’s not cause he’s 40, Singh who has more wins than anyone after turning 40 so idk why you would even add him to your aruguement, and Levet who won last year on the PGA tour. So basically you need to do some research before making a statement like that.

  • gail

Todd Hamilton was a star on the Japanese Tour, and easily won the British Open. When he got to the PGA Tour, I think he may have won once or twice as the competition is just too great. I think the Japanese Tour is like the Euro Tour, slightly below the Hooters and well below the Nationwide. Both are so far below the PGA Tour that it’s not even worthy of discussion….
