Update: Duke’s record back nine

Watch: Duke's eagle

Ken Duke makes an eagle on the par-4 16th after holing out from the fairway.

No one had ever shot a 29 on the back nine at Pebble Beach in the storied history of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am — until Ken Duke did it Thursday.

Actually, he finished with a 28. And it could have been even lower.

Duke’s torrid run began on the par-4 10th with a birdie. After parring the 11th, he went on a birdie binge that didn’t end until he got to the par-4 16th. Instead of a birdie, Duke jarred his approach for an eagle (watch video above). The eagle is just the second at the 16th in the last 20 years.

Duke nearly birdied the 17th: His birdie putt from the fringe just slipped over the cup. He then birdied the par-5 18th after laying up, then pitching to 10 feet.

Duke’s 64 is good for the early lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Well I’m green. I can only imagine how it would feel to play like that at that venue. What a good time he must have been having!

  • Just Stating Facts

The Authority shows that he is resilient after his recent error-prone post.

What do you want to bet that Ken Duke won’t be the lead story tonight. Any guesses as to who it will be?

WHY are they going so Low
    How much of
    a change to
    the ball has
    there been
    this year?
    It’s like these
    guys have
    COMPLETELY elim-
    inated any and
    ALL fear from
    their games…..

  • jholmes

Lead story will be Phil crapping his pants again, and about to m/c. If Tiger had had as miserable a start as Phil this year, there would be mics in his face nonstop “Tiger, what’s wrong? Why are you playing so bad? Are you in a slump? So you think you will ever win again? Will you ever be back?” yadda yadda yadda.

  • sandbelt

they are going low because the courses are short, the weather is perfect and many pin placements are generous.

unless the wind blows, pebble is a breeze for these guys.

  • Peter

I have been fortunate enough to play Pebble a dozen times (though not in the last 20 years…too expensive), and I can count on one hand the total birdies that I’ve made on the back nine. A four or five to one ratio front nine to back nine. That is how tough they play. 28 is a great four man scramble score.

  • Joe lewand

the lead story will be tiger taking aleak at # 16 and then eating a hot dog, no mustard on the front nine, and by the way dustin johnson shot 9 under, now back to tiger.
    just plain bull S%%%t.

  • Joe lewand

the good news abt tiger is that he prob wont play for another 3-4 weeks and we can watch real golf again.

  • Rebecca

Love this man, what a relaxed, enjoyable approach. Congrats Duke…You are the BEST.

  • Dave V

Why you folks mention this Tiger fellow? Tiger who? The 2nd most despised sports athlete in the world. Oh, that Tiger…

  • DOB

you guys must be some yahoo bloggers on here talking all this crap

It’s not that the balls are better, nor that the clubs are better. It is a Pro-Am Tournament and they always play easier. Remember the Bob Hope Desert Classic? It too was a Pro-Am and the scores were so far under par that you needed a Mole Drilling Machine to see them. It’s pin placement and tee location from the very start that determines the overall outcome.

  • Joe lewand

nice lead page pga, all abt tiger not the 3 guys who thrashed him again

  • Ed

    Ken,
Is a great guy I have played with him many times. When I was a Pro at West Palm Beach Golf Club he always went low. Congrats to Ken he deserves it.

  • Chris

Ken is one of those players who will not get recognized. Too bad. He’s a good guy.
I watch the scores each week, sometimes each day, just to see who is playing well, who shoots what. Chi Chi once told Bill Kratzert, payday is Sunday. Some of you will get that. I know, i sound like an old guy, well, i am and too boot, VERY PASSIONATE about golf, at all levels of play. Your right Joe Lewand (trust you were being sarcastic) re lead page by PGA – just your typical journalism for a story. By the way, if you want to read a good book, titled Arnie & Jack – Absolutely FABULOUS!! the young guns won’t understand it, but was ‘old guys’ sure do……..

  • yallaretigerhaters

Tiger didnt get thrashed by the way there Joe. HE had the third lowest score on the most difficult course. Watch tiger be in top 5 after today. Hell win by 4.
