Wi leads, Tiger shoots 68 again

By Brian Wacker, PGATOUR.COM

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — On a day that started out pristine and ended in a hail of drizzle and chilly temperatures, Charlie Wi shot a 3-under 69 on Pebble Beach to get to 12 under and into the leading heading into the weekend at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, was unable to take advantage of the easiest course on the property, Monterey Peninsula Country Club, with just a 2-under 68. That leaves him at 6 under through two rounds.

Unlike the opening round, when Woods needed just 29 putts, he took 33 of them on Friday.

Wi had no such difficulty. He took 29 putts, though he had a wild round with five birdies, an eagle from the fairway and four bogeys.

Three shots behind Wi is Dustin Johnson, a winner here in 2009 and 2010. He shot an even-par 72 on Spyglass Hill Friday.

  • hao

SHAUN when people post on here that tiger is finished… I expect them to come up with names that are taking over between now + the next 2 years.{he’s finished now o/k name them now} the top 9 on your list have been here long enough to compete with him now and the top 3 are the ones that have this chance…out of the rest I think stanley is the top man. that being said I can see tiger westy giving these younger ones a hard time for a few years yet and they are old enough to be there fathers.WHEN I look at your list I see a lot of talent but not a lot of mental strength and thats the most important ingrediant for success tiger ..westy ..ernie..had this at a young age.Mcilroy has all the skill but iam not convinced about the mental side.cheers.

  • SIR SHAUN

Hao.. It was a mixture of “future star’s” and star of today that will certainly still be star’s in the future, they were all under the age of 30 and in no particular order outside the Top 4 or 5.. you could also add Danny Lee to the list.. It look’s like I’m the only 1 of a few that has the bottle to name names for you Hao.

I love Westwood but you cla$$ him as having mental strenth when he hasn’t won a Major(YET!) and McIlroy has, Rory showed what he was made of when he won the US Open.. It seems to me like your a little scared of what McIlroy is capable of doing in the near future.(upstaging your hero Woods)

  • hao

shaun you watch golf, if westy could putt like mcilroy I would put the house on him to beat rory. I told you once before that westy took down norman at the aussie open ..norman owned that tourny and at that time was no1 in world.seen an interview recently westy claimed that win the best of his career. goosen won 2 major and I never cla$$ed him as having mental strength. right place right time has a lot to do with success.I dont appreciate your last remark about tiger ,many have upstaged him over the years{michael campbell included and it doesn’t bother me}not sure if you read a previous article i wrote; rory could win 20 majors and he would not be talked about in the same breathe as tiger or jack .why because the oposition is not there. these young ones now wouldn’t hold a candle to guy’s like els phil vj paddy garcia monty westy ect ect.thanks for putting up some names.cheers

  • scott

william – he may be 4 off second but 6 off the lead…which means he lost ground on the leaders…..and he lost ground when he was playing the easiest course. I don’t count him out but……

  • Sir Shaun

Nice one.. whoever’s posting my Top 20 list of star’s of today and the future for players under the age of 30..Thank You! saves me doing it.

  • Dave

Fair enough list there Shaun but some of those guys there like Wattel aren’t proven enough and could just fail to deliver on promise and end up more like Nick Dougherty than Luke Donald.

  • Dave

of course you could say that about a lot of young golfers but we know that the chances are that certain guys are much less likely to disappear from the golfing map.

  • eddy

Sir Shaun, if we add a few missing names to your list, toss in the “proven” list of guys in their 30′s, top it up with vets, what do we have really? Parity is a strange bird.

  • Sir Shaun

Dave.. hao wanted some names and I gave him some.. Tiger Woods lovers can’t seem understand words like talent, future star and potential, they’re simple blinded by this man.. they constantly fail to recognize their beloved hero is not the best anymore and they’ll always make excuses for him.. It’s totally obvious to any.real Golf fan that he’ll never be as good as he once was..they’re also scared of the fact he will be beat down by some of the players I mentioned more often than not in the near future.

  • Sir Shaun

Eddy.. yes, we have parity for now, but how long will that last? You’re saying to me players from the list I made up won’t contain future Major Champions or multable Major Champions? If so, you don’t have a clue about Golf.

  • eddy

Sir Shaun, we all know that within that list are a few names that may potentially dominate the sport for a period of time, and absolutely a good number will most likely win events incl. Majors. Parity as I’m sure you’re aware is not “new”, and as events unfold, parity and the tiers within will be a reality for a long time, IMO.

  • Dave

You can’t blame them though because they only know what is put in front of them. It reminds me of Fox News or something in some ways, they show what they want to show and the less intelligent viewers will just take it all in and not question it.

Anyone with a bit of objectivity will see that McIlroy is progressing beautifully every single week and he’s only 22. The same for Kaymer and many other young golfers. But if Kaymer doesn’t get coverage over here because Woods has 10 articles dedicated to his routine par on the 15th hole on Thursday morning and none dedicated to Kaymer, how will they know about the skills of the German?

As someone said in a previous thread, the media created this monster. Media has influenced people for generations.

  • Dave

The two that look like they could move away from parity at the minute are Kaymer and McIlroy. You can’t deny that Woods has the potential to do it but certainly not on his own.

The best case scenario for Woods that I can see happening now would be for him to compete and win the odd tournament here and there while staying in the top 10 in the world, then picking off major wins in odd years like Nicklaus in his older years, not dominating but still adding to the records.

  • Sir Shaun

Dave.. yes, the marketing of Tiger Woods State side is well over the top and many people get sucked in to all hype that surrounds Woods.. the Media over their only care about the dollar sign’s and they make all their cash by selling Tiger Woods as their big time brand, which sickens many real Golf fans around. It’s not Woods’ fault

  • Sir Shaun

1 or 2 more Majors for Woods, I can’t see him breaking Jack’s record now.

  • Donald

Enjoying this thread so far. Sir Shaun, how are things in Scotland? I didnt see woodland on your list. After getting a good look at Stanley I expect good things from him in the future. Possibly one of the top Americans for the next ten to fifteen years. Really liked his swing. Agree tiger will win more majors. How many is the question. He will have to be on his game and lucky to take down to new crop of twenty somethings.

  • Donald

    Golf

  • Donald

Okay so its working but I keep getting moderated and I have changed all the possibilities. Getting frustrated!

  • eddy

Donald, every time I use the 3 letter combo a$$ in a word, I get moderated, just a suggestion.

  • Donald

Liking this thread so far. Sir Shaun, how are things in Scotland? I didnt see w00dland on your list. After getting a good look at &tanley I expect good things from him in the future. Po$$ibly one of the top Americans for the next 10 to 15 years. Really liked his swing. Agree tiger will win more majors. How many is the question. He will have to be on his game and opportunistic to take down the next generation.

  • Donald

Okay figured it out! Changed 20 different words and the last thing i tried was I had “10 to 15″ spelled out so I deleted the words and just wrote 10 to 15 and it worked so one of those 2 numbers spelled out is a sure bet moderater dinner bell.

  • Golf Angel

    AWESOME!!

  • World Golf

    Donald.

    I also noticed a couple of days that the word t e e n a g e r gets your post moderated.
I can see now that the word t e e n is the problem.

  • World Golf

As in Matteo Mana s s ero, the t e e nage phenom.

  • World Golf

    Matteo Manazzero, the teenage phenom

  • Sir Shaun

Hello Donald.. life is good here in Scotland, it’s sunny and not too cold for a change.. how are things where you live?

The moderation thing is a total farce and the people in charge of TOUR Report need to have a long hard look at what should be moderated and what shouldn’t.. some of the sick jokes and disgusting words are a disgrace.

Yes, I forgot about Gary Woodland.. Gary definitely has the potential to be a “future star” and he is another name you can add to the list.. Woodland now has one of the World’s best coaches in Butch Harman and we will start to see an improvment in his swing and his whole game in general over the next few years.
