PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Phil Mickelson has admittedly never played well in bad weather, which in part explains why he’s never won a British Open.
During Saturday’s third round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, he saw plenty of it with a heavy mist falling during much of the day — and he broke in it. Mickelson shot a 2-under 70 at Pebble Beach to get to 9 under and within six shots of the lead with one round to play.
What was the difference? His gloves.
“This has been a monumental thing for me,” Mickelson said. “The guys at Callaway told me to try these all-weather gloves. They can get wet and my grips can get wet and I’m not constantly trying to stay dry. The biggest thing for me has always been the club slipping in my hands and then I have to have a tighter grip pressure and I don’t have the same type of free swing.”
Mickelson actually used the gloves at last year’s British Open and had his best career finish there with a tie for second.
It didn’t hurt that Mickelson has won this tournament on three previous occasions, so he know how to manage the courses in inclement weather.
“When it’s raining, you’re trying to make pars, because it’s very difficult to get the ball close, and hard to get a good club into the par-4s,” Mickelson said. “You had to make some adjustments out there.”
That included in his gloves.
GO PHIL!
The gloves indeed…ca ching, ca ching, making his $ 95% off course, $50M/year for advertising. He’s does better cause his shirt sticks to his belly in the rain and we can all see it, up close.
Seriously, create some really wild shots for us to be in awe of, and then back it up with the usual boring take back ones. Thanks.
Mike Miller what an idiot you are!
mike milker eat da poo poo
Both pig and Mickey are over the hill already.
Wi way better golfer than Levin. So what there are big names behim him.He will win.
Hey Mike, I’ll bet you are very good golfer, at least in your eyes… You are certainly an IDIOT in every other way!!
Hoping like heck for a bogey-free 65 from Phil on Sunday, and a 40th career PGA TOUR victory. Would n’t that be sweet?
I think Rickie’s going to have a very good year. I bet he bags his first TOUR victory, and finishes in the top ten of the TOUR’s money list.
Today should be fun, best to all.
Amy will be bringing down a six pack of burgers from In and Out today, Phil will need a snack midround. Expect him to miss a few 3 footers when he gets into contention, some things never change.
Phil; Try putt ing w/gloves,and watch out for those flying clubs today.
WOW – this is some DB. People take the time to comment even though they have perfect games, perfect physical shape and stellar careers of their own.
