Pro-Am competition ends in a tie

While Phil Mickelson was charging to his 40th career PGA TOUR victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, another battle was unfolding at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Padraig Harrington and European business mogul J.P. McManus entered Sunday’s final round with a three-shot lead and held on for a share of the Pro-am title with the team of Brian Harman and Gregg Ontiveros.

At 35 under, the two teams ended the week three-shots clear of the Ricky Barnes-Bill Belichick team. Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots, teed it up at Pebble beach less than a week removed from his team’s loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.

Rounding out the top 5 were Hunter Haas and Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops at 31 under and Steven Bowditch and Ray Romano at 30 under. For Romano, the actor and comedian, it was his first cut made in 12 starts at this event.

I would be interested in what course handicap Gregg Ontiveros played with since his home course index is 14.9, which translates to about an 18 or 19 on a 136-140 slope course. Harman shot 279 and the Harman/Ontiveros team shot 251: Gregg Ontiveros helped him 28 shots. Unbelievable.

Joseph- does it really matter- good for all the amateurs that contributed to the charities- there entry fee is mostly chump change or written off by the companies they represent. The good will that comes from pro-am’s is somewhat the bigger picture. If you want to be anal – then go right ahead-but being anal in this issue -is only a indication of how small your world is. Good for all those that participated in this – oh- yes- good on you Phil.

I am glad Phil is back in the winners circle. When he get the lead most of the time he closes strong. Hats of to Tiger for saying cool and trying to get thru a poor day of golf. Shame on him for not letting Phil put last on the 18th.

brobob67- I am fully aware that the beneficiary of this event is charity and I am all for it. In fact my small world includes support of many non-profits with both my time and my money. I am not being anal about the event or its intent. Nor am I being anal about noting an extraordinary, perhaps miraculous performance by a 14.9 index. I also love golf and believe the USGA handicap system is an important equalizer in the game and don’t want the system to be abused. I know my world and it has room to celebrate/appreciate generosity for charity and room for supporting the integrty of the handicap system. They are not mutually exclusive. I appreciate your point of view but totally disagree.

Joseph you obvioulsy don’t know how they score a pro-am. You take the best score on each hole by either the pro or am. The pro could have had like 2o some birdies over 4 days. The key is not to have either one have a bad hole at the same time

Joseph – This is Ontiveros 2nd year playing in AT&T, handicap roughly the same as last year. This guy plays his home course 1/2 dozen times a year (I know, because I am a member). Otherwise his company/job takes him all over the Country where he plays. Shame on you for throwing out that type of talk…

  • Really?

Ontiveros’ last 20 scores date back to 2004, that doesn’t seem right!

I am very familar with how a pro-am is scored. I have played in many myself. I agree that it is great to “ham and egg” and that is key. My point is the amateur helped the pro by 28 shots and that is quite an accomplishment. I thought I heard that the amateur played with a 17, which means he must have played really well or he is a 17 on a very challenging golf course- and had the beneift of great timing. No doubt the amateur had very expert putt reading and strategy advice, but it is still one heck of a performance over 4 days.

Shame on me for what? I posted Gregg Ontiveros helped his pro by 28 shots and that is was unbelievable for a player with a 14.9 index. Do you not agree? Look at the daily scores. You know my name and have my eamil. I am happy to continue this discussion independent of this forum.

Who do you think you are? Saying “I wonder what course he plays”…. You know where he plays. You are a disgrace. Stir up crap somewhere else.

  • Jason

U lot ought to get a life. U r getting worked up about the pro- am comp? Jeez.

  • Vinny

Great job Gregg. I knew I had no business giving you strokes at LBKC. Congratulations…celebrate with some opus in a rocks glass.

Small minded people love to piss on the accomplishments of others. Congratulations, Gregg!
