Interesting notes from the final round

NORTON, Mass. — A few key notes now that Webb Simpson has beaten Chez Reavie on the second playoff hole to win the Deutsche Bank Championship:

Simpson’s performance on the par 5s Monday was instrumental in his second victory in three weeks. He made two birdies and an eagle on the three par 5s at TPC Boston, playing them to an average of 3.67, which tied his career low when playing three or more in the final round.

Fourteen players in their 20s have won 16 events on the PGA TOUR this year. Simpson, who is 26, and Keegan Bradley, who is 25, each have two wins.

Brandt Snedeker made six birdies in his first nine holes — which equals his second highest total of par breakers on any nine in any round of his career. Snedeker’s best total came when he made eight par breakers and shot 27 on the back nine in the first round of the 2007 Buick Invitational.

Bubba Watson held the third round lead at the Deutsche Bank Championship but struggled in the final round, shooting a 74 that included seven bogeys. That’s the most holes over par by a 54-hole leader in the history of the Deutsche Bank Championship. It also marked the third time on the PGA TOUR this year that the third-round leader played seven or more holes over par in the final round. Brendan Steele did that at the PGA Championship (8 holes over par) as did Graeme McDowell at THE PLAYERS Championship (7).

Simpson-Reavie playoff: Simpson wins

NORTON, Mass. – Webb Simpson moved to the top spot in the FedExCup points standings by beating Chez Reavie in a two-hole playoff on Monday at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

It’s Simpson’s second win in three weeks. He broke through with his first TOUR win at the Wyndham Championship, the last regular-season event prior to the start of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.

Reavie was looking for his first TOUR win since 2008. He now moves to ninth in the FedExCup standings.

Here’s the hole-by-hole look at the playoff between Simpson and Reavie:

SECOND PLAYOFF HOLE (par-4 17th)

Simpson, hitting first, fires a drive in the fairway, 135 yards from the pin.

Reavie matches him, his tee ball landing near Simpson’s ball, 131 yards from the pin.

Simpson’s approach shot ais a beauty, landing below the hole, 8 feet, 9 inches away.

Reavie’s approach leaks a bit to the right. It finds the green but he’s 23 feet, 1 inch from the pin. Incidentally, Reavie is first in the PGA TOUR in putting from 20-25 feet.

Reavie’s putt slides by on the right. He taps in for par.

Simpson rolls in his birdie putt for the win.

Result: Reavie pars, Simpson birdies

FIRST PLAYOFF HOLE (par-5 18th)

Simpson, hitting first, uses 3-wood off the tee and finds the fairway just in front of the bunker, 247 yards from the pin.

Reavie follows with a driver in which he gets theh roll down the left side of the fairway. He has just 217 yards to the pin.

Simpson’s second shot sails past the green on the left, the ball landing near the stands.

Reavie’s shot also lands in the primary rough to the left of the pin.

Simpson’s chip shot finds the green and rolls past the pin. He’ll have a birdie putt of 14 feet, 11 inches.

Reavie’s chip is nicely played, and he’ll have a birdie putt of 2 feet, 10 inches.

Simpson looks over his putt, then backs away due to crowd noise. He regroups and drills the birdie putt.

Reavie makes his short birdie putt to extend the playoff.

Result: Simpson birdies; Reavie birdies

Back nine the difference for Donald

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

NORTON, Mass. — Luke Donald couldn’t be too disappointed.

The Englishman was one of six different players to own the lead at TPC Boston on Monday during the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship. He just struggled on the back nine again, seeing his advantage evaporate with a double bogey at the 12th hole, and Donald ended up in a tie for third.

DonaldWith his 11th top-10 finish of the season, though, Donald will head home to Chicago still ranked No. 5 in the FedExCup standings. He’ll be one of the favorites to pick up his second win of the season at the BMW Championship next week.

"I played really well," Donald said. "I struggled to score on the back nine all week, and that was obviously the difference this week. But even the shots on 12 and 16, I executed them like I wanted to. Just got a hot one on 12, and still to this moment I don’t know what happened on 16. I was staring that shot down. I thought it was perfect. I hit a 7-iron about 182 into the wind over the green.

"I hit good shots, but they weren’t to be."

Donald, who broke a five-year victory drought earlier this year in Tucson, played the front nine at TPC Boston in 15 under and the back nine in 2 over. The world No. 1 was solid tee to green at TPC Boston, ranking tied for 19th in fairways hit and 47th in greens in regulation while his 106 putts left him tied for third in that category.

"It was tough out there, especially today," Donald said. "I think it was swirling a lot. As I said, you can only control kind of the line and the strike, and I did that both pretty well on those shots. But unfortunately they both sailed over the green."

Playoff set: Simpson vs. Reavie

NORTON, Mass. — Chez Reavie’s first bogey in 30 holes was a costly one, as it cost him the win in regulation at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Live Report Image
Reavie

Reavie bogeyed the par-5 18th and dropped to 15 under to fall into a playoff with Webb Simpson. Simpson shot a 6-under 65 on Sunday and Reavie shot a 66.

Simpson, playing three groups ahead of Reavie, made a birdie putt of 26 feet, 7 inches for birdie on the 72nd hole to get to 15 under.

The playoff will start on the 18th, then go to the 17th and back to the 18th if necessary.

Reavie had been flawless all round, and several long putts on the back nine put him in position to win his second TOUR event.

Simpson

On the final hole, he laid up with his second shot after finding the rough with his tee shot. But he airmailed his third shot over the green. After getting relief from the stands, he couldn’t get up-and-down to save par.

Reavie’s par putt from 11 feet, 2 inches just slid by the hole.

Both players are seeking their second career PGA TOUR wins. Reavie’s lone win came at the 2008 RBC Canadian Open, while Simpson broke through with his first TOUR win just two weeks ago at the Wyndham Championship.

FEDEXCUP IMPLICATIONS

Should Webb Simpson win the playoff, he would move to No. 1 in the FedExCup points standings. Simpson started the week fourth in the standings.

Should Chez Reavie win, he would move to No. 4 in the standings. He started the week outside the top 70 bubble at No. 87.

PLAYOFF HISTORY

Chez Reavie has never been in a playoff in his PGA TOUR career.

Webb Simpson has been in one – earlier this year at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans when he lost to Bubba Watson.

Mickelson pleased by weekend

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

NORTON, Mass. –  Phil Mickelson couldn’t be too disappointed with his closing 69 on Sunday at TPC Boston.

He birdied three of his first seven holes to move to 10 under and keep pace with the leaders who were playing with abandon, draining putts from long range and chipping in for eagles. While Mickelson couldn’t maintain the pace, as he had done on Saturday in shooting a tournament-best 63, he was pleased with his weekend overall.

Mickelson"I hit it really well yesterday," Mickelson said. "I had a lot of tap-ins, which was great. But it was a good weekend for me because I had been struggling a little bit and played well on the weekend to get a little bit of confidence heading into this bye week."

Mickelson, who will head to Chicago for the BMW Championship ranked 11th in the FedExCup, said he was happy with the hot start. But given the difficulty of the wind and Sunday pin placements, he knew he needed to get to 12 or 13 under before he could entertain realistic thoughts of winning.

"That’s kind of my number where I thought I could take a peek," Mickelson said. "But I never quite got there."

And as far as the experiment with the belly putter? Well, Mickelson is not ruling it out for next week’s BMW Championship — or beyond. Nor is he wholeheartedly committed to it.

"I thought that the last couple of days especially, but throughout the whole week, from six feet on in, I felt very good with it," Mickelson said. "I made a lot of good ones. Because of that, I think I’m going to practice with it a little bit more from the 10- to 25-foot area where I need to make some of those, and I really didn’t make one this week.

"If I can do that, if I can get effective with that, I think I’ll try to stay with it. … I think it had some merit, and I’m going to practice with it a little more and see if I can get a better feel, a better touch with it."

Leaderboard update: Simpson shoots 65

NORTON, Mass. – Webb Simpson has finished his day with a 6-under 65, the low round of the day. But now he’ll need to see how Chez Reavie finishes.

Simpson is at 15 under, one stroke behind Reavie. Reavie has one hole left, the par-5 18th that is playing as the easiest hole on the course. Just five bogeys have been made on the hole in the final round.

No player still on the course will catch Simpson at 15 under, so if Reavie finishes at 16, he’ll claim his second PGA TOUR event of his career.

Reavie grabbed control of the tournament with a four-hole stretch on the back nine in which he holed three birdie putts from these lengths: 24 feet, 8 inches; 13 feet, 5 inches and 32 feet, 11 inches.

Leishman finds magic again

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

NORTON, Mass. — Marc Leishman acknowledged he was more than a little nervous.

"Honestly at the end, I thought I blew it," the Australian said in all candor.

Leishman had started Monday’s final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship with such promise, playing his first nine holes in 33 to move to 7 under for the tournament. But he got swept away in the wind on the back nine, making three bogeys, one double bogey, a birdie and a par over his last six holes to shot 72.

“I really like this course and I had it going early but couldn’t quite finish it off,” Leishman said. “Just a bit frustrating toward the end but that’s golf.”

Turns out, though, his tie for 42nd waas more than good enough to earn the Aussie a third straight trip to Chicago for the BMW Championship. Leishman, who had to birdie two of his last three holes on Saturday just to make the cut, had started the week as the bubble boy at No. 70 but moved five spots to 65th on Monday.

Leishman had been in a similar situation two years ago. He came to TPC Boston ranked 93rd but jumped to 67th when he tied for 15th at the Deutsche Bank Championship on the strength of a second-round 62. Leishman then went to Cog Hill and tied for second on the way to earning Rookie of the Year honors.

"None, really," Leishman said when asked what kind of pressure he felt. "I mean it was either play gpood and get in next week or not play good and have three weeks off. As simple as that, really."
