Leaderboard update: Haas in control

ATLANTA – With three holes to play, Bill Haas is in good shape to win not only the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, but also the FedExCup.

But there are no guarantees just yet.

Haas just birdied the par-5 15th to move to 10 under for the tournament. That gives him a two-shot lead over Hunter Mahan, who still has six holes to play.

Charles Howell III, Jason Day and Aaron Baddeley are another shot back at 7 under.

Should Haas win the tournament, he would be in position to win the FedExCup. Webb Simpson, No. 1 in points, would not be able to catch him.

There is still a scenario, however, in which Luke Donald could slip past Haas in the FedExCup standings.

If Donald finishes in solo third, he would be ahead of Haas. Donald is currently at 6 under, but he’s only one shot out of a tie for second. Donald has made two straight birdies and has three holes to play.

Simpson finished; now he waits

ATLANTA – Webb Simpson, the FedExCup points leader, has finished his final round with a 3-over 73. That currently puts him 22nd on the leaderboard, 2 over for the tournament.

Now he must wait to see if he’ll win the FedExCup.

Simpson said he is going to hang out in the East Lake clubhouse with his wife and child and wait for the final results.

“It was tough,” Simpson said. “I hung in there. Fought hard. We’ll see what happens.”

At this point, it does not look likely. His best hope is for Aaron Baddeley to win the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. If Baddeley does, and Simpson maintains his spot on the leaderboard, then Simpson would be the FedExCup champion.

But Baddeley is dropping off the pace. He has bogeyed his last two holes to drop in a tie for third, two shots behind current leader Bill Haas.

Should Haas win the tournament, he would currently project to win the FedExCup.

“We’re in a tough situation because Bill Haas is a great friend and I’m pulling for him to play well,” Simpson said. “Whatever happens, happens.”

Simpson’s only other hope would be to move up the leaderboard. Of course, since he has finished his round, that means he needs other players to drop below him.

The closest players to Simpson who are still on the course are Matt Kuchar, who is 1 over for the tournament with two holes to play, and Steve Stricker, who is 1 under for the tournament with three holes to play. It’s doubtful either one will drop below

Should Haas win the tournament, Simpson would need to finish in a two-way tie for 18th to win the FedExCup. That’s not likely to happen for Simpson.

Thus, his best – and possibly only hope now — is to root for Baddeley to bounce back on the back nine.

Simpson said he won’t look back with any regret should he not win the FedExCup.

“I’m not going to take any negatives from this,” he said. “It’s been a great year.”

Leaderboard update: Muddled picture

ATLANTA — With the final twosome now having reached the back nine on Sunday, the FedExCup picture still remains fuzzy.

Bill Haas currently has a one-stroke lead, with Aaron Baddeley and Hunter Mahan tied at one shot behind. Jason Day is two shots back. Any of those four have a shot at winning the FedExCup by winning the tournament.

The two players who could win the FedExCup without winning the tournament — Webb Simpson and Luke Donald — are running out of holes.

Donald has suffered his first two bogeys of the week on the back nine and is threatening to take himself out of the equation unless he rebounds in his final six holes.

Simpson, who entered the week ranked No. 1 in FedExCup points, has one hole to play. He’s currently tied for 22nd. If Simpson maintains that position and Aaron Baddeley wins, then Simpson would win the FedExCup.

Leaderboard update: Badds ahead

ATLANTA – Aaron Baddeley just made a 6-footer at the eighth hole to break out of a three-way tie and take sole possession of the lead at 9 under at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola.

And that’s the best scenario right now for Webb Simpson, who was ranked No. 1 in the FedExCup when he came to East Lake. He’s struggled since and is currently tied for 22nd with three holes remaining – but projected to still win the $10 million bonus.

Of course, there’s a lot of golf remaining as the final group is just playing the ninth hole. Bill Haas, who is also auditioning for the U.S. Presidents Cup team, and Hunter Mahan are tied for second, one stroke off the pace.

Meanwhile, Luke Donald has just made his first bogey of the week on the back nine. The missed 4-footer at the 10th hole dropped him back to 5 under and has him projected fifth in the FedExCup, one spot lower than where he started the week.

Donald could still likely win the FedExCup with a finish of second place or better – depending on how the dominoes fall.

Thus far, few birdies for the leaders

ATLANTA – The leaders in Sunday’s final round are finding it tough to make any birdies on the front nine at East Lake.

Of the top seven names currently on the leaderboard, just three birdies have been made – one by K.J. Choi and two by Bill Haas – against six bogeys. That’s through a cumulative 45 holes played.

Phil Mickelson is the farthest along in his round – he just made the turn after making pars at each of his first nine holes.

Choi, Aaron Baddeley and Hunter Mahan are tied for the lead at 8 under.

Leaderboard update: Two still tied

ATLANTA – Aaron Baddeley and Hunter Mahan are holding steady at the top of the leaderboard after making par on their first five holes on Sunday.

Mahan is projected as No. 1 in the FedExCup now, a jump of 21 spots. Baddeley is now projected in second, thanks to Webb Simpson’s struggles.

Simpson, who was No. 1 in the FedExCup entering the week, is now 3 over for the tournament and 4 over for the day. He’s dropped to No. 3 in the projections and is seven strokes away from a potential $10 million payout.

K.J. Choi is challenging for the lead. THE PLAYERS champ climbed within a shot of the leaders when he chipped in from 65 feet at the fifth hole.

Simpson now 5 back in FedExCup race

ATLANTA – Each of the last two days, Webb Simpson has made the turn over par but the FedExCup leader has managed to get back to even on the back nine.

Well, he faces an uphill battle Sunday at East Lake with the $10 million bonus on the line.

Simpson made the turn in 38 after making two bogeys, one double bogey and just one birdie on the front. The double came at the par-3 sixth where his tee shot found the water and he two-putt from 24 feet.

Simpson is still projected second in the FedExCup but he’s now five strokes out of first in the hunt for the biggest prize in golf. Hunter Mahan, who is tied for the lead with Aaron Baddeley, is currently projected No. 1.

Van Pelt makes par the hard way

Stricker close, Van Pelt holes it

After Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt found the water at the sixth, Stricker nearly holed out from the drop area, while Van Pelt actually did hole out.

ATLANTA — Want to know how quickly momentum can change in this game? Then think about what happened to Bo Van Pelt and Steve Stricker at the sixth hole on Sunday.

Stricker hit first on the 222-yard par 3 and found the water to the right of the green. Van Pelt’s tee shot did the same thing, settling about a foot away from Stricker’s ball.

The two went to the drop area and again, Stricker, was the first to hit. His ball tracked toward the cup like it had radar but stopped an inch from going in.

Van Pelt’s third shot, though, went the extra distance and dropped into the hole. The veteran grinned, dropped his club and raised both hands into the air after making the unusual par.
