Bradley takes Wanamaker on tour

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

EDISON, N.J. – Keegan Bradley has had nine days to adjust to winning the PGA Championship. Seems like there’s been something new and exciting happening each one of them, too.

The little boy who wanted Bradley to sign his forehead on Tuesday? Well, that was just plan weird. But the text from his "absolute childhood hero," New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, was unforgettable.

"I almost hesitate to even say it, because it means so much to me," Bradley said. "I almost thought about just keeping it to myself because that’s how much Tom Brady is to me and my career and everything. To get a text from him reaching out to me was a highlight of my career."

The phone call from Greg Norman was pretty amazing, too. "I swear to God, like something happens every day that I can’t believe that’s going around," Bradley said. "It’s just pretty remarkable."

Bradley, who grew up in Vermont and played collegiately at St. Johns, now lives in Jupiter, Fla. But he took a cue from one of his beloved Boston sports teams when he brought the Wanamaker Trophy back home after his win at the Atlanta Athletic Club — and took it on a tour.

"I really wanted to have the people that may not have access to the trophy to, touch it, to hold it, to grab it," Bradley said. "The defenseman for the Bruins after they won, he grabbed the Stanley Cup, walked out of his house in Boston and walked around the streets with it and just had people touch it, and I thought that was the coolest thing.

"So I wanted people to just be able to touch it, hold it, and looked at their faces like they are looking at a ghost or something. It was really fun."

All good things must come to an end, though. During a media blitz in Atlanta the Monday after he won the PGA Bradley said that he was "crazy" about the game and figured he would be back on the golf course by Wednesday. He was almost right – after all the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup were on the horizon.

"Thursday, when I woke up on Thursday, I was like, I’ve got to get going again and get started and start thinking about this week, because the FedExCup Playoffs are an important part of our season," Bradley said. "I know coming back home, I’ve got two weeks that are almost home games, it’s really cool to be back here and like I said to be able to go see St. John’s. This is a very important event for all of us, especially me."

Bradley flew to New Jersey on Sunday night and spent Monday with the St. John’s golf team. They played at Glen Oaks on Long Island and he spent the night with some of the guys on the team at their "Golf House" in Queens. He did "pull seniority" and kick one of the guys out of his bed.

"It is cool to go back and hang out with those guys –we are basically the same age to a lot of them and it’s super cool, because like I said, it wasn’t that long ago when I was sitting in a house in Queens with 85 dollars in my bank account and struggling around for doing exactly what they are doing,’ Bradley said. "It’s funny to go back and play with the guys — there were three groups and I got to kind of stick around and every group I had was so much fun.

"It’s more fun for me than it is for them. They probably all know that."

Kuchar likes course rotation

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

EDISON, N.J. – Matt Kuchar has won three times, and he’s never gotten to defend a title at the same course where he hoisted the trophy.

Kuchar enters The Barclays as the defending champion of the first event in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Only, he won a year ago at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J., and this week’s event is being played here at Plainfield Country Club.

KucharHis first victory came in 2002 when he won The Honda Classic at TPC Heron Bay. The following year the tournament moved to the Country Club of Mirasol.

Seven years later, Kuchar won the Turning Stone Resort Championship. With that victory, though, he qualified to play in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational — which was held the same week in 2010 so he didn’t go back.

Sense a trend here?

“It’s a bit too bad to have won three times and never have defended on a course that I have won on,’ Kuchar said.

Even so, Kuchar likes the four-course rotation for The Barclays. The tournament makes its debut at The Black Course at Bethpage Park next year, then returns to Liberty National (2013), Ridgewood (2014) and Plainfield (2015).

“To rotate it amongst four courses I think is great for the memberships and also I think it’s great for the field and the players,” Kuchar said. “You don’t get a course, say, Pebble Beach, being the Dustin Johnson Invitational or the John Deere being the Steve Stricker Invitational. Guys may do well at a certain site, but if they change up the course every four years, it makes it fair for the entire field. So I think it’s good for a number of reasons.

“I drove around here on media day and the course looks like a fun golf course to play and I think everybody always looks forward to playing a Donald Ross golf course. So, I’m excited.”

Simpson snaps up first TOUR win

In the end, it wasn’t even close. After torching the field late Saturday, Webb Simpson cruised to his first PGA TOUR victory by three shots over George McNeill, who finishes second for the sixth time in his career.

The victory gives Simpson the third seed in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, which begin next week at The Barclays.

Simpson is the 12th first-time winner on TOUR this year, but arguably the least surprising of them all: Simpson had three runner-up finishes prior to this week.

Three move into Playoffs

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and William McGirt have played their way into the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup on a see-saw afternoon at Sedgefield Country Club.

Els did what he needed to the first three rounds, then hung on Sunday despite shooting 2 over and tying for 30th. He came in at No. 126 and trailing Camilo Villegas by .437 of a point but moved up to 118th.

Harrington and McGirt had a more nerve-wracking afternoon after finishing their rounds projected at Nos. 124 and 125. McGirt moved in and out of the top 125 several times, but ended up grabbing the final spot in The Barclays after Justin Leonard missed a 13-footer for par on the final hole.

Leonard finished 126th in the standings and missed the Playoffs for the first time in his career. He trailed McGirt by six points. Matt Jones, who has now finished 127th twice and 126th once, while David Mathis and Cameron Beckman also fell out of the top 125.

At the other end of the leaderboard, Webb Simpson moved up to No. 3 in the FedExCup with the victory.

Leonard’s bid comes up short

Justin Leonard entered the week 142nd in FedExCup points — and he nearly played his way in. But a bogey on the 72nd hole ended his chances of playing The Barclays next week.

Leonard shot 69 and is currently in a tie for 17th, good for 50 FedExCup points. But it’s not enough. Rookie William McGirt looks like he is going to hang onto the 125th and final spot.

"You know, I got a few weeks off now and I’ll work on it," Leonard said. "I kind of figured I had to make, make another birdie in the last three holes and, you know, had good looks at it 16, 17, I hit two good putts."

For Leonard, the Fall Series awaits. He played three Fall events last year, and he said Sunday he will likely play in three more in 2011.

Simpson gets to 17 under

Webb Simpson has held the lead all day, and an up-and-down birdie on the par-5 15th just gave him a two-shot lead with three holes to go. Simpson is 10 under on the par-5s this week, easily tops among anyone in the field.

The big surprise? Tommy Gainey, who has fired off four birdies in a row after his disaster on the 11th. Gainey will need birdies on the last three holes to catch Simpson, including one on the 507-yard, par-4 18th.

McNeill in the clubhouse at 15 under

George McNeill just gave Webb Simpson a score to beat — and it’s 15 under. The one-time PGA TOUR winner fired a closing 64 — including a gritty par on the 72nd hole.

Interesting stat about McNeill: He’s already finished second five times on TOUR.

Mallinger’s bid loses steam

It looks like John Mallinger will have to wait for the Fall Series to earn the right to secure his card for the 2012 season.

The veteran was as high as solo second for a chunk of the day — exactly where he needed to be to make The Barclays next week — but a pair of bogeys has slid him back all the way into a tie for seventh. He’s going to have to finish strong to secure his first top 10 since … the 2010 Wyndham Championship, where he tied for third.

Leonard bogeys last, falls to 126

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Justin Leonard’s chances of competing in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup have likely ended with a bogey at the 18th hole.

Leonard drove it into the left rough and had to chip out. He hit his third shot to 12 feet but his par putt didn’t sniff the hole. That lifted William McGirt back to No. 125 and gave Padraig Harrington some breathing room at 124th.

Leonard is now ranked No. 126 and appears to be headed for a five-week break with the family.
